I recently installed the KDE and xface desktops out of curiosity but now I'm left with a massive amount of extra Apps, some that I want and some I don't. When I try marking some to remove in Synaptic, it comes up with a bunch of others that will be marked. Is it possible to remove them just one by one with out any extras being marked for removal as well?
View 4 Replieswhat i did was, remove evolution mail from synaptic, what i wanted to do was just remove the indicator applet from the task bar. i read a bunch of bad stuff about removing evolution from synaptic vs just removing the applet.
im worried. did i break anything or put my security at risk. after, i used a command (older) (sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop)to install ubuntu desktop. because i thought that it would fix evolution. then i went to synaptic and installed a package called evolution. i rechecked evolution in applications menu. however, i notice that i have both a checkable evolution and two evolution icons. nothing 'seems' broken. im not sure if it ever was. and evolution calender pops up as normal, as does the the installed plain evolution. they both seems to be an exact copy of the other.
all i really wanted to do was remove the indicator applet. did i make a serious mistake. since ive had ubuntu, ive reformatted a lot because i was worried i made a mistake of some kind. however now im into the more "make a mistake and fix it stage' as im pretty happy with my current desktop and have worked hard to customize it. the command, sudo apt-get remove indicator-messages removed the mail icon. i still am worried that i broke something, or put my security at risk. also, now i have two mail icons. evolution mail and calendar, and another just called evolution.
I think I messed something up with the nautilus, I want to remove nautilus via synaptic, I'm not sure what do I did wrong but, before the process removing the nautilus is over, suddenly it restarted and I at my login screen. When I want to login, I can't, I will be back at the login screen, what I can see is, there is no ubuntu user session below. I can't choose a thing. I can't go into my ubuntu desktop. Now I'm running with my external hdd ubuntu or windows.

However, after restart, the graphical interface doesn't load, I'm in the xserver, I have console but not gui. I was wondering if anyone can tell me which packages I should not remove or let me know of dependencies I need to consider when messing with packages?

But when I go to do it through synaptic, I'm told I also have to remove the Lubuntu desktop. Which, obviously, I don't want to do. So, two questions: Is this just the metapackage, in which nothing will happen if it is removed? Or do I need make these changes through the command line?

but it said it wanted to remove a whole bunch of other stuff as well. (I'm a recent Fedora convert).
Some minimized apps no longer appear in the top menu and by that are no longer accessible.For example firefox with the minimize addon or Jungel Disk backup service.How can I reach apps that minimized them self and are not shown in the top menu?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI know a bunch of commands and I am comfortable using the terminal, I even set a powerpc server but I can't figure out how to remove epiphany on this new computer I'm setting up. I didn't install anything with tasksel. I installed gnome and xorg afterwards... I load it up and 'startx' just fine. then I check around for the programs that were installed. I lik'em gimp, lot's of utilities. gedit. anyway I find epiphany, which I have already established that I dislike, I immediately go to the root terminal (another nice program that comes with gnome) and type apt-get remove epiphany-browser-data the output says it will be deleting gnome... however I have researched and found these are simpy meta packages that don't really matter.... however under the section that states all the packages that will be removed by autoremove there is a huge list... I doubt these packages are safe to remove. how to remove epiphany without removing a huge amount of probably needed software

I've been unable to turn off the notifications that appear in the top right corner, despite a decent amount of searching on google. I can't remove any notifications package without removing a bunch of important software along with it. Also, F13 refuses to "Safely Remove" either of my external disks. I have to yank out the usb cord, touching wood each time.

Ubuntu 9.10. System has been running fine for months. Today, tried to run Synaptic and get the following error: 'Failed to run /usr/bin/synaptic as root - unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file' Where invoking synaptic used to ask me for my password, it now gives the above error message. What I did today was change grub so that I boot to the command line instead of the gui. That worked fine and I can invoke the gui with startx as a normal user. sudo apt-get works OK from the command line.

Whenever I try to install any new software using package manager, software center or apt-get, it gets stuck at Downloading for almost a minute and then the download starts. No problems with the net connections-a high speed connection to backbone through a firewall. It occurs even while updating the package repos.

View 8 Replies View RelatedTook an emachines T3265 with Win XP home and used 9.04 DVD (from Ubuntu book) to wipe out the Win XP and then install 9,04 over the entire hard drive. I then upgraded to 9.10 using the option on update manager. I gave my normal logon all privileges, but I can use synaptic and other functions such as changing update parameters w/o logging on as root. If attempt same from my logon, PC crashes.

Whilst discussing preferred aps, I can also highly recommend ditching Firefox and Evolution for Opera; more features, faster browsing, handles plugin videos better (no greying out), has a built in mail client so everything's in one place, etc. Tried just about every other browser, always go back to Opera.
Is it possible to install a local .deb package with synaptic package manager? I managed to trash network-manager-gnome removing it by mistake instead of a package with a similar name..... oops. So now have no network connections. I downloaded the following file network-manager-gnome_0.8~a~git.20091014t134532.4033e62-0ubuntu1_i386.deb via a computer with a net connection. and now have it on a usb key. Can I point the synaptic package manager to the local package and install like that, or do I have to do it via the console. I also have my original Karmic 9.10 disk, which I imagine has the package on as well. Is there a way to add it via the system installer?

W: Unable to munmap
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
I've runned apt-get clean cmd, but it didn't help. Pc is pretty new with 8 GB ram etc. Synaptic and aptitude gives this error when you open those.

-If I were to uninstall ver 1.1.1 and manually install ver 1.2.1, would it get installed in the same location that Synaptic installs it?
I installed 2.6.34 and no longer need 2.6.32-21. When I go into the package manager and mark it for removal...It looks like it tries to install 2.6.32-22 and 2.6.32-22 Generic and then upgrade Linux-headers-generic.
