Fedora :: Nautilus Starting Up At Login Then Spawning New Instances?
Aug 19, 2009
nautilus starting up at login then spawning new instances till it runs out of memory. At one time I checked Startup Applications Preferences to Automatically remember running applications when logging out; I unchecked this thinking it was the problem; but it has not gone away; I have to kill nautilus, then the spawning will stop. Also I can not close nautilus; another instance will run; sometimes starting the spawn all over.

Rebooting after an update I can't see any icon on the desktop (FC12, gnome). If I manually start nautilus they appear, but I obviously would like that to happen automatically. What could be the problem and how to solve it?

i'm trying to set up password-less SSH login between multiple instances on my server. My goal is to be able to monitor all instances, whether I created them or not, with Zenoss.
Current setup: 3 machines
A: Zenoss host- owned by me, Access via putty with my keypair
B: instance- owned by me, access via putty with my keypair
C: instance- owned by teammate, access via putty with their keypair
I'm able to set up password-less SSH login between the instances I have created (A to B), however, I cannot between my Zenoss monitoring instance and any instances not created by me(A to C). Whenever I try to copy the id_rsa.pub file to these instances, I keep getting a Permission denied(public key) error. I believe the problem is that I have log in to my instances using my keypair but must use the the other instances creator's keypair to access their instances.

I've recently installed F14 on my netbook. All went well. I've installed Screenlets, and they run well. Unfortunately I have to reload all the widgets I have running on startup to make them show.
I believe the problem is the order the Screenlets are loading. Is there a way for me to restrain the Screenlets from loading until Compiz has been loaded? I've added the widgets I want to load to the gnome session startup script using gnome-session-properties, but no luck in ordering the timing they load. I seem to remember in older Fedora releases you could change the load order. Anyway no luck there.
Next I created a bash script with a sleep delay to load the widgets. I added the script to gnome-session-properties, still no luck. The only way I can get the widgets to show is to manually reload them once the desktop/Compiz has loaded.

Hey all, I need help here! Whenever I boot up Fedora 13 my computer just decides to stop doing things right before the graphical login screen comes up. The system starts up properly, but after the "local" program starts, it goes to the fedora-colored blue screen right before the login screen usually comes up. I can still bring up consoles with ctrl alt f1/f2 and switch the tty screens. Whenever I try to start the X server using the X or Xorg command, it echoes the usual stuff and then the screen goes black. After that, nothing happens. I can get out of X by using the classic ctrl alt backspace method.
I haven't checked any X logs other than Xorg.0.log, but I'll post the others for any special failures soon.

Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome. When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.
System specs:
Motherboard: MSI P45 Platinum
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E8500
Video Card: Radeon HD4850
Memory: 4GB (2x2GB) Patriot

The system in question is using Mint 9, but the forums there aren't as active and since its Ubuntu based I didn't think it would be a concern bringing my problem here. If this is an issue, apologies, lock the thread and I'll head over to the Mint forums. So I have an SSH server running on the system, but I only like to have it running at certain times, so I removed it from the rc scripts using the command: sudo update-rc.d -f ssh remove.
Anyway, later I found that SSH was turning on at boot time anyway. I checked the rc scripts manually and couldn't find reference to it. I then tried to stop the process using the command: sudo /etc/init.d/ssh stop which reported that it was working, but after checking the processes and consulting syslog I found that it was re-spawning after I had told it to stop.I found 2 ways to stop the process without it re-spawning:sudo initctl stop sshand sudo service ssh stopSo whilst I can turn it off at each boot, or script it to shutdown at login, I'm still wondering why update-rc.d isn't working

This is the second new install of 10.4 on the same machine with the same issue. After boot, as soon as user logs into the desktop, sys mon shows cpu at 100 percent and a steady climb in ram usage. several processes are spawned continuously until all ram is consumed and then moves on to use scratch space.
Using top, the process count moves into over a thousand total processes. Some investigation using top, ps, and digging into the /proc folder shows a ppid of 1 If the machine is booted to shell, top shows 120 processes and is stable. Some of the processes running repetitively are the gnome toolbar, nautilus, and I wish I was clear headed enough to write the others down before I left work. I can certainly get a more complete list in the morning.
I have swapped out ram, and the processor with no success. I have also tried apt-get purge ubuntu-desktop then installing with apt, this did not resolve it. As mentioned at the top of the post, this is the second install with these symptoms. The first install started showing the issue about 10 hours after first boot. On this second install, all was working fine for a couple days before this started in.

I was transferring data from one computer to my laptop and crash error came up on my laptop...
Error 1:
Nautilus-2.32.0-1.fc14 Reason: Process/usr/bin/nautilus was killed by signal 11 (SIGSEGV)
Error 2:
Openoffice.Org-Brand Crash
Reason: Process/usr/lib/openoffice.org3/program/soffice.bin was killed by signal (SIGABRT)
What could be the problem? Is it serious issue? I have been having security issues with Windows and are those issues begun once again? I have been under targeted attack since 2005.

I've got two sound cards fitted, before I've always killed pulseaudio as a pain in the butt.
Without pulseaudio enabled I could run two audio apps simultaneously, ie run a SDR ( software defined radio) app , and listen to music or watch TV at the same time.
However, with puls audio running, you can only run one, either input to either output. So can a second instance of pulseaudio be run, master and slave perhaps ?

So I installed the Nvidia driver on a fresh install of F13 & rebooted in the image I've attached. So, my question, what should I be posting here to fix it? Xorg.conf? Honestly, the one thing I've never had an issue with in Linux is video drivers. I've always run Nvidia cards & they've always just worked. So I'm at a loss for the first time in a long time. I also tried googling, but I have no idea what to google.

I recently completed a scratch install of Fedora Core 14 64-bit onto a system, and while everything appears to be running properly, I noticed there are almost 300 processes running at a given time on the server. The top command indicated there were ten-plus instances of the watchdog, migration, and ksoftirqd daemons running on the system. I am not familiar with these services, so I wanted to know what they are, and is there a need to have this many instances of each running on the system?

I had a question about starting scripts when my user logs into the system. The script is just a simple bash script that runs an infinite while loop that does a who | grep <USERNAME> and if it returns zero then executes a program and then exits the script. First I tried adding my script to the /etc/init.d dir but after login I could not find the script running anywhere using ps -ef and/or ps -aux. Then I tried adding the script into the /etc/init.d/rc*.d directories but also could not find it running. It wasn't until I decided to use the "Startup Applications" option in the "Control Center". So my question about that is, where does that application add those apps to so they start at login time? I could not find any "links", etc... for that script in any of those dirs?
Also, one other question. How do I create a user that I can use for SSH and su to if need be, but not have the option to login to that user at boot time. Before I created the other user, it would just automatically login to the my "everyday" user account, which is what I want. But now with the new user I get prompted to select which user I want to login in to.

I just installed GS following the instructions here:[URL]... and the classic way of getting GS to start at login (adding gnome-shell --replace in start up applications) doesnt work.
To start GS now we have to use the command "~/gnome-shell/source/gnome-shell/src/gnome-shell --replace" via the terminal adding that to start up doesnt work either, does anyone know how to get GS to start at login?

I am using Ubuntu 9.10, and is the only OS installed on my system. Yesterday, my desktop stopped working - no right-click function / display of icons. My wallpaper was still intact. The last thing I did was pressed ALT + F2 and executed "gksudo nautilus". This fixed my desktop for the time being, but wasn't showing the correct icons/wallpaper.The real problem started when I restarted. I get the normal login screen, and when I enter my info, it just restarts back to the login screen. I know I am entering the correct information, my caps lock isn't on etc. If I enter my password incorrectly it doesn't reload, it just acts normal and says the pw was wrong. Only when I enter my info correctly does it go to a black screen really quick, then come back to the boot screen.
I am at work right now, but will be checking this thread again later tonight. Please help, I am locked out of my computer which I desperately need to log in to!

I removed my .gnome and .nautilus folders and .notifier file. it is working now. I do not know exactly which of these 3 fixed it but I hope this might help someone else!I have some major issue with nautilus which is preventing me from loogging in into my system which is kind of criticle this weekend.I'm running Squeeze with latest updates.
The problem:Today gnome gave some problems caus my taskbar was suddently gone. I couldn't get it back to i reinstall gnome-desktop and updated my whole system. At the update some yes/no questions on a blue screen asking me to restart cups etc had corrupted yes/no buttons. Weird character sets were shown. Well that can happen sometimes i thought. After reinstalling gnome i can't login anymore. My screen keeps flashing while it shows the loading icon of the mouse.Anyone got suggestions? I can't find similar problems on the internet, only problems that happen while already logged in. In my case the segfault prevents gdm starting!

Since the samba server has SHARE security mode, I need password only. But when I try to log in the samba share folders from Ubuntu box using nautilus, it asks username, domain and password. I cannot log in share folders on the Debian box. There is no message. Nautilus keep showing the password input box until i cancel it.So I use smbmount command. It works well. But that way is not comfortable at all. Anyone can help me logging in samba share in nautilus?
