Ubuntu :: Couldn't Access Synaptic Restarted System And Login Screen Wouldn't Show Up

May 13, 2010

I have no idea how I did it. All of a sudden I couldn't access synaptic so I restarted my system and the login screen wouldn't show up. I tried dpkg --configure -a and sudo apt-get install -f. I can't access my system at all.

General :: Tool To Show In Logs When System Panicked Restarted Unscheduled?

Jan 5, 2011

I have it at lot that when a system crashes fatally and restarts (due to a power outage, kernel panic, tripping over a cord or something), there is no mention of it in the log. It just shows that the system was started. Is there a tool that will show this in the log? With a message like "system was not shut down properly or had a fatal crash / kernel panic" when restarting? It is pretty easy to do, just have a lock file somewhere that is removed when the system shuts down gracefully and that is left when it is not. And mechanism that checks this when starting up. It would also be possible to tell when the crash occured, as you can update the lock file from time to time and when the systems dies, it cannot anymore.

Ubuntu :: Computer Won't Boot \ Opened The Screen But The Login Screen Wouldn't Appear?

Oct 1, 2010

I am using Ubuntu 10.04.1 and I run it 24 hours a day. Recently one morning I went to my laptop and opened the screen but the login screen wouldn't appear. Anytime the cursor appeared, HDD activity would go to 100%. I'm assuming this because the HDD light on my laptop was permanently on. So I made the dumb decision of just holding the power button down and turning it off. When I turned it back on, I noticed it came to a command prompt type screen listing "initramfs" at the bottom apparently wanting me to input a command. I did a lot of research and couldn't find much of anything that would help me. I read about GRUB, superblocks, fsck, e2fsck, etc.. . I tried all of those and nothing has worked so far. Any ideas? I did notice one thing. When I went into the actual install with the livecd, it told me the drive was /dev/sda5, but in Disk Utility on the livecd, it told me it was /dev/sda1

OpenSUSE Install :: 'x11failsafe' Parameter - GUI Wouldn't Show Up - Ctrl+alt+f2 Yeilded A Black Screen With A Blinking Underscore

Oct 30, 2009

I ran into a problem the moment i installed 11.1. The GUI wouldn't show up (ctrl+alt+f2 yeilded a black screen with a blinking underscore). Failsafe worked fine, though.

So, i tried entering, one by one, every parameter that was entered in the failsafe boot options. Entering 'x11failsafe' gave me a flawless GUI. So, i opened the '/boot/grub/menu.lst' file and added this parameter in the 'showopts' of the normal mode, to make it permanent. Fine. Now, what exactly have i done?

Note- I use an NVidia 8000 series Graphic card. I'll post more details if you need them.

Ubuntu Installation :: Rebooted The System, It Came To A Blank Screen With A Blinking Cursor And Wouldn't Continue On?

Aug 4, 2011

Just curious if there is any sort of issues with Ubuntu and JBOD assignments. I had my 2 500GB hdd's as JBOD through my mobo BIOS/RAID Config and it didn't like it. It installed just fine and showed the hard drives separately. I really didn't think anything of it so I continued on.After the install completed successfully, and I rebooted the system, it came to a blank screen with a blinking cursor and wouldn't continue on. So I tried restarting a few times, no luck. Finally I was like "okay screw this, going to install with no RAID setup or JBOD setup." (had RAID issues last night. rabble rabble) Removed RAID configurations and BAM started right up..S. Semi-new to Linux/Ubuntu. Know the basics and what not, just not some of the more advanced stuff.Edit: Okay, so I restarted my computer and removed my USB drive (which I had installed Ubuntu from) and it didn't boot. So it was NOT an issue with JBOD. Guess I'll look for a resolution for that, though.

Ubuntu :: The Page Wouldn't Load Tried To Get Into Firewall, And Couldn't Figure Out?

Dec 27, 2010

I have been having a couple of problems with various programs, and though I have read some threads that addressed the issues, they haven't solved myproblems.Keeping in mind for this, I have the 10.04 lucid version of Ubuntu.Now, a few days ago, Transmission decided to stop downloading songs. Transmission says that a port is closed, and I'm not entirely sure that that is the problem. Still, I attempted to go into my modem, and it didn't work. The page wouldn't load. I tried to get into my firewall, and I couldn't figure out how. A friend of mine who also has Ubuntu gave his Transmission a try, and it worked. When he checked the port, it also said that it was closed. So, I have no idea what the problem could be.Second, I have a Creative Zen Mosaic EZ300, and have been trying to get software to use it on my computer. I can sync to it, and add songs, but I can't delete or edit anything. I tried gnome, but it didn't recognize the player.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Does Not Show Login Screen At Startup?

Feb 4, 2011

I'm a beginner with Linux. I'm using the version of Ubuntu 10.10 installed in a notebook HP Pavilion tx 2000 (Turion 64 x2). My Ubuntu is 32 bits.

I'm passing for the following situation:

When I turn on my notebook, if it is running on battery (even with the battery has 100% of charge), a login / password screen does not appear, and the screen goes dark and nothing more I can do (that I knew!). So I re-start the machine.

However, if the notebook is plugged into electrical energy (with or without battery), a login / password appears normally.

If, with the notebook plugged into electrical energy, I log in Ubuntu operating system, then great. After loaded the operating system, I can turn off electrical energy and the notebook works normally (only with battery). In other words, just the login screen that is with this electrical energy problem.

Ubuntu :: Login Screen Doesn't Show: Meerkat

Oct 21, 2010

I upgraded kubuntu from lucid(10.04) to Meerkat(10.10). problem is login screen doesnt show up on boot. A black screen shows, Ctrl-Alt-F1 doesnt show the tty1. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesnt work either, neither does Ctrl-Alt-Del.

I switch off the computer and reboot into recovery mode, I get the graphical recovery menu, on choosing boot normally, I get the tty1 login prompt.

Upon logging, I check /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old. There is no error, nvidia 260.xx driver is loaded successfully and all other modules are loaded as well.

I have done 'apt-get update' to see if there is any update in repository but there isnt.

Ubuntu :: Automatic Login After Having Killed / Restarted / Zapped The X Server?

Jul 8, 2010

I'm setting up a mythTV frontend, so have set up automatic login in GDM, which works perfectly. I've also re-enabled the "kill X server" key combo (ctrl-alt-backspace), as other people here are used to that to restart it if everything goes pear-shaped.

However, the autologin isn't working properly after I kill the X server -- just sits at the login screen, and I have to manually log in.

how to fix that? Essentially, I never want to see the log in screen -- I want it to always log in as my generic MythTV user.

Not sure if it's any help, but here's my /etc/gdm/custom.conf:

Code:
[daemon]
AutomaticLoginEnable=true
AutomaticLogin=generic
TimedLoginEnable=false
TimedLogin=generic
TimedLoginDelay=1
DefaultSession=gnome

(I've also tried enabling the "TimedLoginEnable", and have tried delays of 0, 1, and 10 seconds. They don't seem to work, either.)

When using apt-cache to find the reverse depends of a package, it would only show dependencies for packages in repositories that you have added wouldn't it? It wouldn't show that a package in a repository that your apt has never heard of depends on it?

In 99% of the cases I use "Peter" and have explicitely to click on Peter. Only then the password entry field appears and I can enter it.

This is somehow user unfriendly. Can I define somehow a default user (here: Peter) and show immediately the password entry field (and place the cursor inside)?

Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 Update, Restarted, And Now System's In A Loop?

Feb 8, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 in a dual boot alongside Windows vista on an HP DV6000 laptop.It's been running smoothly for months. No problems.Today, I was in Ubuntu, and the Update Manager asked me to update (ok) and then said it needed to restart. I hit the restart now button and the system started to shut down, but never fully shut down. It's in a kind of loop, trying to start up, but not going all the way, and then shuts down again.I did a hard reboot but still nothing - the same loop. I don't even see my HP startup screen, nor can I access the BIOS, much less Grub.I put in the Ubuntu startup CD and it tries to read from that at startup, but then fails and returns to the same loop.

General :: Lost All Running Programs On A Server (inside *screen) When Client Restarted?

Apr 21, 2011

I sshed to a server a week ago, then ran *screen* and created a few windows in my screen session. I then ran a few programs on those screens. All the programs were running in the background (I run them with &). I did not close or detach from the screen sessions. So I was still connected to those screen sessions from my client machine.

Then, this morning I find my client machine rebooted. When I do screen -ls I find there are no screens available to reattach to. But that is not the worst part. The strange thing is that all my processes (which were running on the server) have disappeared as well, even though they were running in the background. I thought 1) using screen I will be able to re-attach to old screens when my client restarts, 2) If I have sshed to a server and have run programs in the background, restarting the client should not stop those programs (even if I had not used screen).
