Aug 4, 2011I recently bought an host to have a personal website and would like to create a bash script to create make a mirror copy of it and then add it to crontab to run once a week. Essentially what I want to do is to get the website by using wget -m ftp://user***@ftp.host/mydir
Once this is done I'd like to have everything in an archive called mysite.date.tar.7z I've no experience at all of bash scripting but I guess this should be an easy task? How to make the user and password not visible ? Is there any other option better than wget? (maybe rsync it works better?)
Ubuntu Multimedia :: Easy Way To Rip , Edit , Remaster A DVD?
Jul 13, 2010Maybe there _is_ no easy way, but I have a home-made video in Standard Definition on a DVD that I'd like to do some simple editing of and reburn. Just trying to take out some dead air-time.
I looked through this forum lightly, but maybe don't know what I'm looking for.
Is there any not-too-sophisticated tool or set of tools that will let me do this on Ubuntu?
OpenSUSE :: Possible To Remaster LiveCD?
Jan 10, 2010Other distro's have the ability to remaster (or make), a live cd of their install, is there an easy way to do this with Opensuse?
My thoughts are primarily with a fresh install complete with all updates, then make a live cd. In the event of a disaster a simple install from the live cd would get an updated version back again without the headache of installing updates, codecs etc...
Ubuntu has remastersys, PcLinuxOs can make Live cd's by a default app but i've not seen such things for Opensuse versions >= 11.1.

Jun 13, 2011I have Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 updated to 9.10 and have downloaded Remaster from Remastersys. I followed all of the instructions, which were simple enough. However, there must be some instructions missing as the process failed. Working with Remaster through Synaptic Manager, the iso was downloaded into my "home" folder into its own Remaster folder. It was not the iso, like you get when downloading a distro from the Internet, which downloads just an iso onto the Desktop. Inside the folder were a bunch of empty files (I know, because I opened them) and an iso . At this point the Remaster instruction stop. They do not say what to do with the other files, or what they have to do with the iso of my Ubuntu layout. So, like any other iso (once I knew which one was the iso of my setup), I double clicked on it and it ran me through the process of accessing the DVD to burn it. Which I did. I tested it and it failed with some kind of message to the effect that certain files were missing or it could not read it. So, I thought, I would have to do the 'hunt and peck' method and experiment a few times like I did with the ordinary distro downloads until I get it right. But first, I would have to dump the Remaster folder in the "home" folder since it took up so much space on my hard drive. Wrong! I come to find out it is in something called "root" and that I do not have permission to do anything with it but "copy" it. Great. Just great! Now what do I do. I tried to change permissions, but was not allowed to do that either. The only thing I could think of - and dread - was the idea of having to wipe my hard drive and go through the whole reinstall procedures, which takes me days, just because Remaster has locked itself into my system - and there is no 'back door' to get out of it.

Jul 4, 2011I was trying to create a partition on my hard drive on Linux using the GParted program. I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. But after that it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore looking thing. It goes nowhere from there. It usually goes to a black screen after the hp logo, that says GRUB loading.

Well, I am facing problem when doing lab questions.
I must use DLXLinux bundled in Bochs (bochs.sourceforge.net).
I am required to use the /usr/local directory.
In /usr directory, there is no directory named 'local' but there is one thing called 'local@'. So, when I try to use mkdir command to create 'local' directory in /usr , there are error "cannot make directory.....".

May 18, 2010When I compile a custom kernel with this command: make-kpkg --initrd kernel_image kernel_headers and then install the .deb, there's no initrd in /boot and I have to create it manually. I've thought that the --initrd option should take care about this, but somehow it doesn't.
It behaves like this for about two years at least (since I've compiled my first kernel). Of course, it's no big deal to create it manually, I was just wondering whether do I do anything wrong or whether should I fill a bug report..

May 25, 2010he clicks on everything on his GNOME desktop, and manages to delete everything, including menus, icons, etc. The people he lives with aren't skilled enough to fix it, and I live a good eight hours away. I have remote capabilities with NX, but that requires them to initiate a connection to my workstation here, which is more painful than I thought it would be. I need a way of locking down the desktop, so it's read-only, so he can't make the changes he seems to keep making. I figure I could make the .gnome directory read-only, but I don't know if that would affect the normal operation.

Mar 26, 2016I build and use a custom kernel, and use the nvidia driver. This is on debian stretch.
By default, I build the image and headers packages with this line:
CONCURRENCY_LEVEL=8 nice -n19 ionice -c3 fakeroot make-kpkg --initrd --append-to-version=-something --revision=1 kernel_image kernel_headers
These kernel sources are usually the sources from debian, with a couple of more patches that I add. It appears that for nvidia-driver package versions higher than 352.79-1, the kernel headers/sources need to be prepared with 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts'. It's that simple. I concluded this after the nvidia dkms build failed on my custom kernel, but then succeeded after I pointed it to the full sources, but only after running 'make prepare' and 'make prepare scripts' on them. The problem is that this make-kpkg scheme doesn't appear to do this, or if it does, it doesn't properly include in the headers everything that it should.
