Ubuntu Multimedia :: Easy Way To Rip , Edit , Remaster A DVD?

Jul 13, 2010

Maybe there _is_ no easy way, but I have a home-made video in Standard Definition on a DVD that I'd like to do some simple editing of and reburn. Just trying to take out some dead air-time.

I looked through this forum lightly, but maybe don't know what I'm looking for.

Is there any not-too-sophisticated tool or set of tools that will let me do this on Ubuntu?

Hardware :: Easy GUI Tool To Edit Keyboard Layout?

Jan 13, 2010

I do a fair bit of writing and note-taking with using math/physics symbols. As much as it pains me to say it, in my Windows XP vm (via virtualbox) I was able to use the "Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator" to make a keyboard layout that put in symbols for greek letter, h-bar, inequality signs, etc...

I want to do the same on my linux box. However, all I've found so far is tutorials telling me to edit the text file of xkb/xmodmap. This is less than ideal. So, is there an equivalent tool that would easily allow me to make it so that special characters (ie greek letters, math symbols, etc) were inputted when I pressed CTRL-ALT-<key> or some other such combination?

Alternately, if someone knows a way to import files from teh MS layout creator, that would do the trick as well. However, it's less likely.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Tv Tuner Card: (Vivanco PCI EASY BG / DK) Not Working

Jul 27, 2010

I have an almost noname tv tuner card: Vivanco PCI EASY BG/DK. Lspci says it is Philips Semiconductors SAA7134/SAA7135HL Video Broadcast Decoder (rev 01). Dmesg detected it as a LifeView FlyVIDEO3000. I tried to configure it making the file at /etc/modprobe.d with the options card=2 tuner=5 (I found that also in dmesg). Still TvTime can't find any channels. I also tried using xawtv and scantv, but only managed to find two channels using ntsc somehow, but I have PAL BG/DK. (the card itself works on Windows, but it took me a while to configure the channels properly)

OpenSUSE :: Possible To Remaster LiveCD?

Jan 10, 2010

Other distro's have the ability to remaster (or make), a live cd of their install, is there an easy way to do this with Opensuse?

My thoughts are primarily with a fresh install complete with all updates, then make a live cd. In the event of a disaster a simple install from the live cd would get an updated version back again without the headache of installing updates, codecs etc...

Ubuntu has remastersys, PcLinuxOs can make Live cd's by a default app but i've not seen such things for Opensuse versions >= 11.1.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Can't Edit T2i MOV Files

May 31, 2010

Got my T2i a few days ago. Shot a bunch of short MOV files. Trying to do simple edits like trimming the beginning and ends. Nothing else.

Cinelerra 4 - no sound
Kdenlive - aside from crashing all the time, renders with unacceptable artifacts.
Lives - spends a long time making proxies then crashes
Avidemux - crashes on save/render
Kino - plays back first frame then last frame. Kinda funny but not.
Open Movie Editor - Does nothing at all
Open Shot - Can't find any libs
PiTiVi - Tools? We don't need no stinkin' editing tools.

Will Lunmeria be released before I die?
Will Lightworks be released before I die?

Is it time to retrench back into Windows 7 where there are numerous editors that actually work? Sure, costs money but the free stuff just dont work.

BTW, VLC plays the files back beautifully -- no skips, no jerks, sound completely in tact.

Ubuntu :: Delete Remaster Folder From Home Folder?

Jun 13, 2011

I have Ubuntu Jaunty 9.04 updated to 9.10 and have downloaded Remaster from Remastersys. I followed all of the instructions, which were simple enough. However, there must be some instructions missing as the process failed. Working with Remaster through Synaptic Manager, the iso was downloaded into my "home" folder into its own Remaster folder. It was not the iso, like you get when downloading a distro from the Internet, which downloads just an iso onto the Desktop. Inside the folder were a bunch of empty files (I know, because I opened them) and an iso . At this point the Remaster instruction stop. They do not say what to do with the other files, or what they have to do with the iso of my Ubuntu layout. So, like any other iso (once I knew which one was the iso of my setup), I double clicked on it and it ran me through the process of accessing the DVD to burn it. Which I did. I tested it and it failed with some kind of message to the effect that certain files were missing or it could not read it. So, I thought, I would have to do the 'hunt and peck' method and experiment a few times like I did with the ordinary distro downloads until I get it right. But first, I would have to dump the Remaster folder in the "home" folder since it took up so much space on my hard drive. Wrong! I come to find out it is in something called "root" and that I do not have permission to do anything with it but "copy" it. Great. Just great! Now what do I do. I tried to change permissions, but was not allowed to do that either. The only thing I could think of - and dread - was the idea of having to wipe my hard drive and go through the whole reinstall procedures, which takes me days, just because Remaster has locked itself into my system - and there is no 'back door' to get out of it.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Cant Edit Raw Files With Any Program?

Apr 15, 2010

I haven't put this in the forums for any of the separate programs, because im having the same problem in all of them, im thinking maybe its a problem elsewhere?I recently got a Canon DSLR. It can save in Raw format, I use this function. Canons Raw format is "Whatever.CR2"F spot viewer and all editor programs see then and 'preview' them with no problem. The images appear to have no problem until you load them into GIMP (with UFRAW) UFRAW standalone, RAWStudio etc.

They load, but only as a small vertical rectangle. Often very purple in colour.I thought maybe it was something wrong with just the way it looked, so I just loaded one, went save as (a jpeg) and then loaded it up, it loaded as a small picture of the same purple-haze bar.Have I done something wrong? I googled it, downloaded UFRaw, even Ubuntu studio, same problem before and after studio installation. All these programs claim to read raw images.Just as an example, In RawStudio:I load up the folder of raw images. I can see all the images clearly with no problems in the preview slider up top. I can scroll through them and see them all no problem. When I click on one, it loads in the editing box as some weird bar (always vertical in orientation) often faintly resembling part of the photo but with seriously acid trip colours. Eg massive purple hazes, green everything etc.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Submit Or Edit Freedb CD Info?

Jan 18, 2011

I have searched the web and these forums and have come up empty-handed. There must be a way... even and easy way... to submit or edit freedb information for a CD. Grip supposedly had the ability but 1) it seems to be no longer maintained and 2) it seems it requires sendmail to be installed. I've read that submissions can be made by email, but 1) I've found no information on how to do this (ie structure and content of email) and 2) that's a lame way to have to do this.

This shouldn't be difficult (much less impossible). What am I missing?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Edit And Create Video DVD With Menu?

Feb 26, 2011

Does anyone have a solution that actually works for creating video DVDs from beginning to end? My requirements are pretty simple, I would think. I need to take video from an NTSC DVD (which I made from 8mm analog tape), edit it, create a menu, and burn it. It doesn't have to be fancy. It just has to work. The total project is a little over 1 hour of video. I have reasonable computer power for this.

That doesn't seem like such a difficult task, but it actually requires using up to four different mutually incompatible programs, each of which has nearly infinite options, a huge number of intermediate file types, and infinite ways to fail. If there are intermediate files to be written, I need to know EXACTLY what files and formats to use, and what packages must be installed to use those formats. I don't care if the programs are KDE or Gnome (even a command line might work if the procedure is clear-cut).

The task consists of four parts:
* Rip or import an ordinary video from DVD. (This was made by a hardware DVD recorder).
* Edit videos. Create clips, cut, past, move, fade.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Change Default Audio Stream Of A DVD (maybe Edit IFO)?

Feb 20, 2010

I just had a quick question. I would like to burn a DVD to disc. The VOBs in the Video_TS folder have 3 Audio tracks: Stereo, Surround, Mono. By default it plays the Stereo track. Is there any way to change this? ffmpeg -i [insert_video_location] in the terminal gives me:

Code:

Stream #0.0[0x1e0]: Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480 [PAR 32:27 DAR 16:9], 9800 kb/s, 29.97 tbr, 90k tbn, 59.94 tbc
Stream #0.1[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16, 384 kb/s
Stream #0.2[0x81]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5.1, s16, 448 kb/s
Stream #0.3[0x82]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, mono, s16, 96 kb/s

Will 0x80 always be the default? Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but I'm going to be playing these discs on a DVD Player without a remote (can't help it), so I won't be able to switch the audio on the fly, and they have no menus. You put it in, and it goes straight to the movie.
