Software :: Why Have To Make Files World Readable?
Mar 17, 2011Linux permissions have always frustrated me. They are really annoying to work with and very unversatile compared to NTFS.Here's my current situation, and I don't understand what's going on here.
I have a server with a smb share, a user on another machine is in the group that is assigned to those files. The files are chmodded 770. If the user is in that group then technically that user should have access to those files... but it does not. If I chmod to 775 then the user has access. WTF? Why? I don't care given it's a local server, but still, if I have to make files world readable for a single user to have access even though I granted those rights through the filesystem and through samba, then that's a huge security issue, and it's no wonder we're not seeing Linux used for enterprise file servers.
Another thing that pisses me off with linux permissions is when a new file is created, the permissions arn't inherited. This folder gets lot of data added to it but it defaults to whatever the default permissions are. I need to run a script to periodicly fix all the permissions. To me this is really messy.

Starting from the operating system to the programs all was backed by a closed company.EurekaAt the year 2004, I have read a magazine that mentioned the word "Linux", it was the first time I got to know that actually there was other Operating Systems than Windows. I "googled" and "wikipped"(searched), all the information I could get about that new system(for me).
After few searchs the word "Debian GNU/Linux" came up. I have burned the ISO file for a brand new CD and got all enthusiast.ExperienceI had actually complete the command line install, but always thinking for myself "What a waste of time!" (Yeah... such an idiot I was at that time).
After the installation, I booted the distribution and at the minimal error and/or thing that didn't worked like I pretended, I would just say a lot of terrible things and give up.The second chanceOnly at about 2007, I gave Linux other chance(ironic, like Linux was the guilty for my lack of skills. I downloaded and burned the Ubuntu Linux 6.06 Live CD ISO.
I was astonished when the CD booted,
asked for language and actually changed it.
Then the Live Environment "flashed"(appeared).
I was out of words and almost regretted everything I have said about Linux efforts(I still didn't had a open mind tough). For the first time I actually faced-up the problems and issues that came up, but annoying everyone and saying bad stuff(I'm terribly sorry).The enlightenmentOnly at about end of 2009, I started actually wanting to learn how everything worked. That was the time I changed for Slackware Linux distribution. I learned many stuff. But with the time, I realized that the important isn't the Operating System and/or Distribution we use, is the use that we make of it. Nowadays I use about any distribution without complaining much. We need to respect the work of others after all, and we can learn with the mistakes too.

Ubuntu :: Remove Windows 7 - Reintegrate Partition & Make The World A Better Place
May 24, 2010Currently have a dual boot HTPC running windows 7 & ubuntu 9.10 , windows pulled "no longer a valid"on me after an update an i was left with a limited machine. I figure now is as good time as any to go full with a fully linux system. However, i am having some problems.
1) Windows 7 needs purged from my system.. like a cancer. I need to get rid of my sda1 windows partition. I gathered i will need gparted and grub2.. But will i need a Gpart liveCD? I need someone to take my though it.
I got and ran Gparted. My system seems to have 3 partitions with 2 unallocated spaces.
2) I will need to remount the windows partition after i reformate it and get rid of windows. I will likely need help with this as well. believe it is also worth noting that i believe wubi was used to put Ubuntu on this machine.
General :: Use Mkdir Command To Create 'local' Directory In /usr - There Are Error - Cannot Make Directory

Well, I am facing problem when doing lab questions.
I must use DLXLinux bundled in Bochs (bochs.sourceforge.net).
I am required to use the /usr/local directory.
In /usr directory, there is no directory named 'local' but there is one thing called 'local@'. So, when I try to use mkdir command to create 'local' directory in /usr , there are error "cannot make directory.....".

Aug 4, 2011I recently bought an host to have a personal website and would like to create a bash script to create make a mirror copy of it and then add it to crontab to run once a week. Essentially what I want to do is to get the website by using wget -m ftp://user***@ftp.host/mydir
Once this is done I'd like to have everything in an archive called mysite.date.tar.7z I've no experience at all of bash scripting but I guess this should be an easy task? How to make the user and password not visible ? Is there any other option better than wget? (maybe rsync it works better?)

I am clueless, as there is a HUGE lack of documentation on Vala in general, and even the little documentation there is is only partially written, except for this. I decided to stick to Vala as my beginner's programming language to study, as it includes the necessary content I need (object-oriented, GNOME/GTK friendly) and I am studying it all I can. I am not posting any code right now; I plan to take other members' advice here and slowly write/test code before it goes into a new project.

Feb 28, 2009I decided to switch from Ubuntu to Fedora Core 10 KDEdual boot installation worked perfectly... all smooth!untill i got to installing things....i wanted to install ndiswrapper, so i manually downloaded it on my second pc and transferred it trought a USB stick to the Fedora PC. When reading the 'installation manual' it clearly uses the "make" command a lot...problem is; bash error: "bash: make: command not found"So i google this and i get some solutions, all involving online repositories...so basically... i need internet to get the MAKE rpm, and i need the MAKE rpm to get the internet working... :')I tried searching online repositories but i haven't got a clue about what i need to download from there (to get the make command, or the "Development Tools") and how to install it on my fedora pc....i need help :P It would be much appreciated if someone could explain me how i could get these important packages up and running on my system with manual downloading and installing.I haven't got a clue how to do this manually... I've been on it for hours allready and I'm getting a bit fed up with it I can't understand why such an important package isn't standard included in the installation.

Nov 13, 2010I need to install ubuntu or edubuntu (preferably) on an older computer (256 ram) whose cd rom is shot, but the USB ports work! The family has 2 kids and the parents are very computer illiterate and know NO English. The kids' future is dependent on learning English. The grandfather is illiterate in his language! They are not down and out people, but they could use some help, if you know what I mean! I do have an external DVDRW drive and 2 computers where Ubuntu Maverick and Lucid have been installed. I will be about 300 km from them to give support. I have 2 days Monday to Wednesday next week to install Ubuntu or edubuntu.
I read on the internet 3 solutions, one of them offering a USB fix, which I am not 100% clear on: [URL] I do not know how to program and am far more comfortable around a GUI, even though I sometimes venture off using the terminal (albeit, copying and pasting codes that other provides and that often I only get half the meaning of). The USB stick option seems to be one of the best solution at this time because I have tested it in the past! The computer has suddenly crashed (I had installed Windows in a multiple user/password mode), but one of the kids (older) was using games from friends' usbs (maybe full of virii)! Maybe the crash is a hardware crash as surges are common in the area. (I will be able to check for that using some kind of software if I can boot the comp.) After installing Ubuntu succesfully on two more recent computers already, I think Ubuntu or edubuntu might be the best solution for this situation. I am also 300 KM from being able to help out these people!
I have a few questions at this time. If the option of basically using one computer's image (ubuntu Maverick) that I have installed with all the packages that come with it (solution 1) is a viable one, how am I going to deal with the difference in hardware between the two computers. DOn't they need "drivers" and packages related to these specific components? Could I use the external dvd drive? If so, how can I get the old computer to recognize it. Assuming I can make it work again, would I need to download (beforehand) the windows drivers/files needed? Install them which might help if I want to use it to install the ISO image. I am not thinking about a dual boot since space is an issue and windows is a bad option anyway (virii).

I noticed my hard drive had a key next to its name but could not find information regarding it online. I proceeded to unmount the drive and made 2 partitions. However, it game me an error saying it couldnt make the partitions. I turned my computer off thinking i would get back to trying tomorrow. Today i turn on my laptop and see the usual hp screen. But after that it goes to a black screen with a blinking underscore looking thing. It goes nowhere from there. It usually goes to a black screen after the hp logo, that says GRUB loading.
