Ubuntu :: Rebooting Or Shutting-down Always Is Accompanied With A File Manager Not Responding Message?

May 28, 2011

I have installed 4 accounts on my acer aspire 4520 laptop. OS is natty (2.6.38-9-generic), 64 bit distro. Only on one account I can not access the directories / files placed on my desktop. Clicking on Places, in order to open My Documents, for example, does not work.Typing nautilus on the command line, gives the following output:uwe@koch-laptop:~$ nautilus

(nautilus:18297): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.(nautilus:18297): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.uwe@koch-laptop:~$ Removing and reinstalling nautilus solves the problem for that specific session, but not for the following.

Rebooting or shutting-down always is accompanied with a file manager not responding message.

Ubuntu :: File Manager Is Not Responding?

May 14, 2011

I have upgraded to 11.04 today. I am somewhat dissapointed for various reasons, but my worst problem is the fact that file manager (nautilus, I think?) no longer works. When I try to open a folder, it will display "Opening [folder]..." on the taskbar, but it shortly dissapears and nothing happens. When I log out, something informs me that File Manager is not responding.

Ubuntu :: Won't Use Swap File After Rebooting

Aug 17, 2010

I'm having problems using a swap file to increase swap space in Linux. I followed the instructions for creating a swap file, as shown here:

[URL]

It works, and I increased my swap space. But when I reboot, I'm back to the original amount of swap space I had before. The swap file I created is still there, but it's not being used as swap space. I tried remounting the swap file but it doesn't work.

Also, it seems there isn't an fstab entry created for the swap file. Strange, huh? I don't think it made a difference but I manually copied the UUID for the swap file and made an entry in fstab.

I may be wrong, but from what I can tell the UUID of the swap file keeps changing every time I reboot.

So basically every time I reboot I have to repeat the instructions shown above to get more swap space.

OpenSUSE Network :: Wireless Not Responding, Hardware / Unable To Enable It Through Network-manager Applet?

Apr 4, 2010

I recently installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and everything works fine except wi-fi card, of course. The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Was Unmanaged. Got That Message When Clicked The Icon At The Right-bottom Bar?

May 8, 2010

language-pack-en, language-pack-en-base, language-pack-kde-en, language-pack-kde-en-base, libsoup2.4-1, libsoup-gnome2.4-1, pm-utils today on my laptop. Some hours later, I had to force the computer to shut down by pressing the power button, since it got totally lagged when I started it after an automatic sleep due to no power left. I started it, logged in and saw that the network manager was unmanaged. I got that message when I clicked the icon at the right-bottom bar.

So, I tried with "ifconfig" in a Terminal, as root.Therefor, I did "sudo ifconfig eth1 up", and the same with eth0. The network manager did not work anyways. I killed it using "sudo killall -9 knetworkmanager" and started it with "knetworkmanager" from the Terminal. The icon got removed and it appeared again, but nothing changed - it said "network manager disables", as before.I logged off and select "Restart X server" from the login screen. I logged in again and tried. Didn't work. When I restarted my computer I saw that eth0 and eth1 was down again. I took them up and then I checked the hardware settings. I saw that I could use either KNetworkManager, Fake Net or Wicd. I tried to locate if I had Wicd or Fake Net installed, but I hadn't.

Neither the wireless or the wired connection works now. I'd like to know how to fix the Network Manager, or whatever is wrong. Also, I'd like to know if I can install Wicd using a CD or something. Maybe Wicd works better, I have no idea. I'm using Kubuntu 10.04, the final release.

Ubuntu :: Help With Bin File - Error Message - Bash - /hldsupdatetool.bin - No Such File Or Directory

Jun 9, 2009

I am new to Linux and I wanted to setup a dedicated game server on my notebook.

I've installed Ubuntu 9.04. I than created a directory named /home/phlex/kfserver. I downloaded the application binary from Steam. I changed the file permission with chmod +x hldsupdatetool.bin and now the file attributes are -rwxr-xr-x.

The problem is when I try to run the binary file. If I type ./hldsupdatetool.bin I get an error message "-bash: ./hldsupdatetool.bin: No such file or directory. It seems the OS can't find the file. I've downloaded the file several times thinking it may have been corrupt but it's not. I can delete the file, I can rename it and so the file is there. Sometimes Linux can be aggravating to use.

Red Hat :: Inode64 XFS File System And Stale NFS File Handle Message

Jan 12, 2011

I have a 20TB filesystem, xfs formatted. The filesystem has been mounted with the inode64 option, and I now need to NFS export it. NFS doesn't like the inode64 option at all. The NFS clients cannot access any of the directories with inode numbers exceeding the 32bit limit. They get the "Stale NFS file handle" message. I have tried to attach the filesystem to a RHEL5.3 system, and after turning on the no_subtree_check option in /etc/exports on the server, it all works fine. No changes were needed on the clients.

The problem is that I need to get this to work on a RHEL4.4 system. Unfortunately I cannot do any test on that system yet, I then did a quick test on a RHEL4.3 system... and it didn't work. Even using the no_subtree_check option was on any help. I am afraid that this will not work on the RHEL4.4 system either. How to get the inode64 xfs filesystem NFS exported on a 2.6.9 kernel?
