Dec 23, 20091 week ago I updated my box, and after the reboot and installation of the new kernel 2.6.31.6-166.fc12.i168.PAE the desktop background and the icons of it disappear, and when i click to open the home dear, it loads and than do nothing.I can't right click on the desktop and when i shot down the system it pop's up to me "A program is still running" File Manager Not Responding Sow, first i think is a bug (spread) , and with the next update it will bee fixed but now after 1 week, i updated my system and nothing changes. I can't browse anything, and for now bash is the only friend for me.For info, the same thing happens when i boot with the old kernel

Jan 14, 2010Yesterday I install f12 into my laptop, installation is goes fine, I successfully boot into my desktop all thing is good, after that I update some packages and then reboot my system, after reboot I cant see any thing on my desktop, and when is logout or restart my f12 system a popup messages comes up in which I got the messages file manager is still running but not responding even I also cant right click on my desktop, I reinstall my nautilus but the problem is still there.

May 14, 2011I have upgraded to 11.04 today. I am somewhat dissapointed for various reasons, but my worst problem is the fact that file manager (nautilus, I think?) no longer works. When I try to open a folder, it will display "Opening [folder]..." on the taskbar, but it shortly dissapears and nothing happens. When I log out, something informs me that File Manager is not responding.

Jun 22, 2010every time this boots now, I get that message. If I hit cancel, then the screen locks and the mouse moves but nothing happens. The only way to get it show the desktop, is to select 'logout anyway'
Plus the boot takes forever at least 4 times longer than karmic.
all of this is in reference to booting up the PC

Jul 26, 2011My network manager application went missing a few days ago. I enabled it by right clicking on the taskbar above and opting for "show". It reappeared and worked fine. After I rebooted, however, it was there ok, but it doesn't respond to clicking at all. It has stopped working.

Jul 26, 2011My trusty 11.04 x64 Ubuntu desktop machine stopped booting up properly about 2 weeks ago - it goes through Grub and into Plymouth, but then freezes and stops responding to keyboard input either on a dark purple screen, or less often the same but with the Ubuntu logo and the 5 boot progress circles but with none of them lit up. I can hit escape early on after grub and see initialisation reports showing everything successful (other than a fail on "Automatic crash report generation") - up to a line saying "Stopping System V runlevel compatibility [OK]", at which point it freezes.
Going into recovery mode allows me to fsck the disk (which is fine, and smartctl reports all attributes as fine), fix packages (which I have done a number of times, to no avail) and boot into safe graphical mode, which works fine, albeit only on one monitor and with very poor graphics performance, obviously. As the machine was borked and everything was backed up on my fileserver anyway, I decided to nuke it and give Fedora a go (I've been using Ubuntu since Feisty and it was a good time to try something else). Fedora was fine (and worked with the default nouveau driver), but I didn't like it, so after less than 24 hours away from the fold I decided to come back to Ubuntu.
At least a reinstall should fix the problem with booting, right? Wrong! The live CD worked fine, installed perfectly, and the machine behaved itself upon first reboot - at which point I ran apt-get dist-upgrade, restarted, and blam - right back where I started. Updated vanilla Ubuntu 11.04 will not boot. Has Ubuntu released a dodgy package that has broken my x server? I don't want to have to go back to 10.10 -

Sep 30, 2010It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.

Apr 4, 2010I recently installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and everything works fine except wi-fi card, of course. The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.

Sep 1, 2011I was having a problem with a fresh 11.04 install and the VPN software I use for work. I found the fix was to upgrade the software, so I downloaded an RPM, converted it to .deb and installed it via dpkg. The install worked and the VPN software now works, but Package Manager says I have a broken package and wants to 'upgrade' to the older broken one. How can I fix this without breaking my VPN SW again?
