I have upgraded to 11.04 today. I am somewhat dissapointed for various reasons, but my worst problem is the fact that file manager (nautilus, I think?) no longer works. When I try to open a folder, it will display "Opening [folder]..." on the taskbar, but it shortly dissapears and nothing happens. When I log out, something informs me that File Manager is not responding.
1 week ago I updated my box, and after the reboot and installation of the new kernel 2.6.31.6-166.fc12.i168.PAE the desktop background and the icons of it disappear, and when i click to open the home dear, it loads and than do nothing.I can't right click on the desktop and when i shot down the system it pop's up to me "A program is still running" File Manager Not Responding Sow, first i think is a bug (spread) , and with the next update it will bee fixed but now after 1 week, i updated my system and nothing changes. I can't browse anything, and for now bash is the only friend for me.For info, the same thing happens when i boot with the old kernel
Yesterday I install f12 into my laptop, installation is goes fine, I successfully boot into my desktop all thing is good, after that I update some packages and then reboot my system, after reboot I cant see any thing on my desktop, and when is logout or restart my f12 system a popup messages comes up in which I got the messages file manager is still running but not responding even I also cant right click on my desktop, I reinstall my nautilus but the problem is still there.
I have installed 4 accounts on my acer aspire 4520 laptop. OS is natty (2.6.38-9-generic), 64 bit distro. Only on one account I can not access the directories / files placed on my desktop. Clicking on Places, in order to open My Documents, for example, does not work.Typing nautilus on the command line, gives the following output:uwe@koch-laptop:~$ nautilus
(nautilus:18297): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.(nautilus:18297): Unique-DBus-WARNING **: Error while sending message: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.uwe@koch-laptop:~$ Removing and reinstalling nautilus solves the problem for that specific session, but not for the following.
Rebooting or shutting-down always is accompanied with a file manager not responding message.
every time this boots now, I get that message. If I hit cancel, then the screen locks and the mouse moves but nothing happens. The only way to get it show the desktop, is to select 'logout anyway'
Plus the boot takes forever at least 4 times longer than karmic.
My network manager application went missing a few days ago. I enabled it by right clicking on the taskbar above and opting for "show". It reappeared and worked fine. After I rebooted, however, it was there ok, but it doesn't respond to clicking at all. It has stopped working.
I recently installed OpenSUSE 11.2 and everything works fine except wi-fi card, of course. The problem is that after installation the system recognized the card (is was listed in network devices in Yast) but I was unable to enable it through network-manager applet. Though the device could make scanning through terminal (found article in docs but didn't fully understand wpa_gui). Then i was stupid enough to delete the device from Yast list to try to reinstall it. So the problem is that i simply can't do this cause i see no way to re-detect. That is the goal is to at least turn back to post-install system state and try to enable wifi card again.
So I've got a 500gb ext4 formatted drive I use for backup, and I'm trying save my personal files from my laptop's hard drive (the laptop power supply just died) but whenever I try to copy+paste something from the NTFS laptop drive to the ext4 drive, nautilus freezes up, and suddenly both of my CPU cores hit 100% and Ubuntu is using 1.6GB of RAM, from like 200MB when it's idle.
I'm using 10.04 Pentium D 2.4Ghz Dual 2GB RAM
The laptop drive is a 5000RPM 250GB Sata, NTFS partition is 125GBThe backup drive is a 7200RPM 500GB Sata, ext4 partition is 500GB
Non-root user cannot launch "shortcuts" (sorry I grew up on windows, don't know the right term) from the file manager or plasma desktop manager. They have full permissions to the shortcuts, even ones they create do not work.If I log in with root permissions they work fine
I have recently switched to using LXDE on my PC and I am on the whole pretty pleased with it. However,PCMan is giving me a really odd problem. Some of the files/folders are being displayed in the wrong order where they contain numbers. They are being ordered by their first digit not the whole number.

I hope you will be able to help me, because a day ago asked the same question to russian linux users and did not give me an answer at all. I am using xubuntu on my laptop and am completely sick and tired og thunar file manager. Found what I want - it is Gnome Commander. But really cannot find out how to make it default, especialy I would like to open it by clicking the button Folders (Places) near the Main menu button (hope I described it correct).
i can use it to auto arrange desktop files automaticly like in windows how can i do this with this software? and by the way what are the diffrences between ubuntu 8.10 9.10 and 10.04 dvd version?
Update manager freezes when updating. I recently tried installing tor manually through wget and then gpg, as per the instructions on the website. My update manger now freezes at file 50/51, and in terminal, at [99%] Waiting for headers.... I just finished the update manager, it fails to retrieve the package then times out. Partially completes update after that.
I'm running Nautilus in standard Ubuntu 10.10, but it lacks a feature that is very important for my usage. If there is a modification for Nautilus, that would be best, if there is another Linux file manager that provides the feature,When I save a file in a directory by starting to type what I want to name the file in the Windows file manager, at least from XP to current, then a list pops up below the typing line with a list of the files that match that string of characters. I don't know if or how Nautilus can be made to do this.
Why important: I use a Firefox add-on to download songs from some internet radio websites. Because I download so many, I follow the naming convention ARTIST- ALBUM- SONG. Because I've already got over 4000 songs so downloaded, I usually don't know if, when I hear a song, whether I've already downloaded it or not. By having the feature, I just start typing to name the file, and I quickly discover if I already have the song so I can skip the song until I get to one I have not downloaded.
I have, in fact, stated my problem correctly. I want to make Nautilus as the default File Manager in KDE. I use GNOME on other computers, and don't like the feel of the KDE file manager on my PC. I looked online but most "solutions" are for the other way round and in either case, didn't work for me.
I tried changing the 'inode/directory' file association to Nautilus but it didn't change anything. What can I do ? (I have GNOME as a DE here too .. But I would like to know how to change the association in KDE as well)
In Windows Explorer detailed view I can select columns to display artist title, track number, etc for MP3 files. Is this functionality available under Krusader, Nautilus, Dolphin, etc? If so please help.
I downloaded a kde-multimedia package that was supposed to make this work in Konqueror but no luck.
I use nautilus at the moment on Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick. I use grep cli command to locate text words or comments in a folder containing hundreds of files, each having 5 or 6 text documents in Greek and English.
I am looking for a manager that will index all entries, and enable me to find a phrase or word within these documents quickly. I seen to recall that some time ago I saw a manager that was capable of this, that generated an index, as data was added, but have been unable to locate it with google.
Is there a file manager that I can use for Ubuntu which has a "session restore" feature. Think of a sort of "save all these tabs" feature except applied to the file manager only. And for additional clarification: I run several desktops and each one has a file manager on it with several tabs of the file manager open. Each set of tabs are related to a topic I am working on.
I'm using Xubuntu Natty, and recently started using Compiz, mostly just for minimize animations and window previews. The problem is, whenever I have compiz on and try to do anything in the file manager other than opening folders or files, such as cutting and pasting a file to a different folder, the whole system crashes. I have PCmanFM as well as Thunar, and both do this. How can I fix compiz to not do this? I am tired of having to turn off my computer, and risking losing data. For now I have compiz turned off, but is there a way to fix this and still use it?
I have tried to make my own buntu running LXDE as the desktop environment though it is running smoothly on an old laptop it has a certain problem.
I have installed PCMan File Manager as the default file manager for the LXDE and not Thunar or Dolphin, but, I have a problem with opening files from there. The default application set to open all file types is the Terminal.
What I currently do to open the file is right click and choose "Open with.." to open the file in the appropriate application. Is there a way to set the default applications?
I have Ubuntu 9.10 from minimal CD install then got LXDE and installed the following applications aside from the applications that came with LXDE:
-OpenOffice.org suite -Mozilla Firefox -Google Picasa -Wine -VLC Player
I need some restoring my Nautilus File Manager back to its original state. I tried installing Elementary Nautilus but for some reason it was not working for me, so I uninstalled it but have been having an issue with Nautilus looking like its former self. Now Nautilus doesn't display the "tree" on the left, there are no back/forward icons, and generally looking strange. Here's a picture to showcase my issue:

I would love to use Elementary Nautilus but can not get it as my default file manager. Since I can't do that I just want Nautilus (the one that comes shipped with Ubuntu) to look and act like it's supposed to.
Is there a GUI that will allow me to set a default file manager for Xubuntu? I would like to use the Nautilus File manager. Right now I access Nautilus from a launcher I have on my Panel. I would like to have the ability to switch file managers, set defaults etc...
I now find the icon for File Manager doesn't do anything! Well it bounces to indicate that it's working but the File Manager/Browser does not come up!Does anyone know of a solution to this
I installed the elementary theme and played with it. Unfortunately, I accidentally remove the icons in the file manager. Refer to attached image. How will I display the icons, menus and address bar again?
Any way to add / remove directories within the Unity File Manager? If so how, If not and Ubuntu is looking to make Unity its default file manager... I will just have to say goodbye to Ubuntu. After all what's a file manager if you can't add or remove files or directories.
I need some help on changing my desktop to ICEWM. Want my laptop to run light as possible by using thunar, icewm panels and themes. I got it to change to ICEWM as the default window manager instead of compiz, but can't figure out how to change the panels, themes and file manager?
How can I change the default file manager in GNOME? I've got these notes but neither methods work:
GUI Change under 'Session control' in 'Ubuntu Tweak' Delete nautilus and type in pcmanfm or another file manager such as thunar Apply Quit ubuntu-tweak Reboot
