I am getting the below message, when I try a start update manager?
Could not initialize the package information
An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information.
Please report this bug for the 'update-manager' package and try to include the following error message
E:Malformed Status line, no 3rd word, E:Error occurred while processing toshset (UsePackage2), Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/dpkg/status, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'

i am unable to open update manager when i open it , it gives back a msg stating that cannot initialize the package information. and here is the error msg.
'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
And when i tried with #sudo apt-get update
Reading package lists... Error!
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
and even i tried with deleting that file(security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_maverick-security_restricted_binary-i386_Packages) but was unsuccessful.

I upgraded Ubuntu 11.04 x86 to Ubuntu 11.10 x86 via system upgrade. I am running 11.04 on an HP tx2 laptop. I have been able to perform updates until the last one. Then I get the following message when I try to use update manager or terminal to get updates or just to generally install a new program. Could not initialize the package information An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/ftp.egr.msu.edu_pub_ubuntu_archive_dists_natty-updates_main_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'
I performed the update from 10.10 online so I don't have the cd nor will I be able to download it. Not enough time to do so.

This is the error I got when I tried to update it today. On the top the icon for the update manager is a red circle with a white line like a stop sign. When I click on it this is the error message I get. Could not initialize the package information. An unresolved problem occurred while initializing the package information.

I readded all my sources and ppa's on the upgrade but now they are disabled? Also I have a malformed line..Why would they be disabled if I changed them all one by one through software sources?

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 and everything was working fine until I tried to update. Now I can't get any packages, update, or even get into a package manager. All of these give me the same error. I reformatted my computer last night and put Ubuntu 10.04 on my Dell Inspiron B130 laptop. I made and used the Ubuntu 10.04 live cd last night. Install was uneventful. Now I can't use update manager. I get this error:

I have done a scratch install of Ubuntu 11.04 (natty) on my PC with an unrecoverable error during the installation phase. However, I was able to boot the PC with Natty but my package manager and update managers are not working properly. I am pasting below the error message shown by package manager.

I cannot update package information in Synaptic Package Manager. In terminal window it shows inability to connect to 10.3.2.1:8080 (http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/lucid etc). If I point to this url in my browser I can access the files.

It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Am I the only one who gets this on gnome everytime I start up package manager or package finder in 11.3?
System management is locked by the application with pid 6890 (/usr/sbin/packagekitd)
I literally have to kill -9 pid everytime I run it. What is going on here?

Ok so I having the same issue as everyone else but it still exists despite the solutions other people are experiencing. Update manager, synaptic, and apt-get are not working no aptitude on here. Update manager says: An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package information. report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the following error message: 'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, Eroblem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/us.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_natty_universe_ i18n_Translation-en%5fUS, E:The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.' apt-get has errors with headers, finding files, and wrong file types. I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.
