I have installed Opensuse 11.3 32bit on my machine. Everything works except it will not reboot or shut down. I get as far as the lizard then it stops like It does not know how to. I run su user in terminal and give init 0 command and it will shut down. but init 6 just does the same as reboot above.

Rebooting or shutting-down always is accompanied with a file manager not responding message.
I'm using Gnome and I'd like to still have the ability to reboot/shutdown from one particular account as well as root. How would I modify the chmod command to add this ability?Also, I have a few users who just will hold the power button in to shutdown the machine. View 2 Replies View RelatedSince i installed fedora 12 i cannot successfully shutdown or reboot my pc as was possible with fedora 11: i already tried with no luck with desktop button, the commands 'poweroff', the 'shutdown -h now' and the 'reboot' but the system go to the bliking cursor and hangs without powering off (and reboot while requested). And i have to hard poweroff the system... (GRRRR)If i go on the console I can only see the system terminating services and saying "halting system" and then hangs...
Now i have kenel 2.6.32.12-115.fc12.i686.PAE, but this problem happened with last 5 preceeding.I use the mjm installation guide since fedora 7 (or later) and i had the following HW (lspci).
I have never been able to see the splash screen, something that I'd like. I have checked the options on the bootloader and it says "splash=silent" (that's disabled?). I found it confusing, because the ubuntu kernel boots with "splash" but when I try that option on OpenSuSE 11.2 it doesn't.Also when I shut down the laptop the screen goes crazy, only the two top cms shows "something" which are blinking and crazy green and white console words moving from one place to another so fast I can't even been able to read what it actually says.Either way, the laptop shuts down without any problem (?). I think is the normal shutdown process (without splash) but it's a bit perturbing. I've had had a couple of kind of "aesthetics" issues, but far from critical. My overall experience with OpenSuSE after 4 or 5 years being "debianized" have been very nice .
View 3 Replies View Related'm running openSUSE 11.2 with KDE 4.4.2.
Since i installed KDE 4.* Whenever I go to shutdown, I get the shutdown dialogue, I hit shutdown, it logs me off, shows some text on shutdown screen, and then opens up the GUI again, bringing up a small window, where It asks for the root password, in order to shutdown. If i don't give it the root password, it goes to the login screen.
I cannot, any way, command line, GUI, or anything, shutdown without providing a root password.
If I use the command shutdown now, as root, it logs me off and goes through an endless cycle of logging off, and then asking for root to shut down, and not shutting down (All on the CLI), and everytime i give it the password, it cancels shutdown and goes back to the prompt. I eventually have to pull the battery to kill it in that case..
I have tried chmoding the shutdown scripts to make it work, it doesn't.
I have recently done clean installs of 11.4 on two computers and then done clean re-installs but still have the same problem. Each time, the install was without flaw and I could download the updates, when offered, in the install process. At the end of the install I can log into KDE and everything works. However, after shutting down, on reboot, I only get a command line login. I can either login and run startx or use su and do init 3 followed by init 5. This tells me I am getting to runlevel 5 but X isn't starting. Either of those approaches gives me the KDE login. However, after that I have to manually start the network in YAST. I also think I had had to restart CUPS but I have only got as far as installing a printer once so I can't be absolutely sure that happened. As I indicate, this is fully reproducible. Anyone give me a clue as to what is going on?

The system always returns to the login page which requires to choose account id and enter passwd even when I type in correct normal user id and passwd. The root account can be used.

When installing from the 32bit media KDE is always English afterwards but when installing from the 64bit media I will have a german KDE as expected. Changing country & language & preferred language on the 32bit does not help - still in English.
How do I replace a 32bit version of 11.1 with a 64bit version of 11.2 or is it even possible?
View 2 Replies View Relatedi glad i switched, but still have lots to learn. Any who, currently i am working on a server for some residents at my current job. I have DNS and everything setup right and it is working. Samba on the other hand is configured right but it keeps shutting down after about a minute. When i run this command:
chksmb status
it says "Dead". Ill restart the service(rcsmb start), and keep checking the status, and after about a minute it shuts down again. I have done a restart, double checked my configurations and still cant find why this is happening. (config file somewhere?)
Suse 11.1 opera 10. When I shut down opera browser I assume it should shut down completely? Infact sometimes it does, but often it just goes to sleep (futex_wait). Any way to make it shutdown/kill itself every time ???

It is annoying to do it again and again. Luckily, I don't restart my system very often but still I would like to avoid that.What should I do to stop this resetting? I'm trying to use nspluginwrapper to run 32bit Flash in Iceweasel. I need some 32bit libraries that aren't included in ia32-libs, like libnss3.so and libssl3.so. However I have no idea how to get them. I've tried aptitude install ia32-libs-libnss3 like it says on the wiki but it just tells me that it can't find ia32-libs-libnss3. I've also tried aptitude install libnss3.so but it gives me the same error. I'm running amd64 Lenny 5.0.5. What should I do?

I have Ubuntu on both of these drives 1 is Ubuntu 10.10 32bit the other is Ubuntu 10.10 64bit. When in the live environment can I tell which bit I am currently running.
