Networking :: Ubuntu Freezing When Network Manager Is Started.(11.04) / Fix It?
Jul 25, 2011Yesterday I had to use my netbooks Acer restore program to restore my win7 partition to factory settings. This morning when booting up unbuntu, I was greeted with the guild freezing every time. I also booted in classic and had the same problem. I decided to open safe mode and deactivate each program one at a time. WHen I get to network manager Unity boots fine. I then try to start Network Manager from inside of Unity after it boots and as soon as it boots, the entire computer freezes again, it was booting fine until I had to restore my win7 partition, win7 networks still work. It's and Asus Aspire One 722.

Nov 16, 2010My file manager keeps on opening in the taskbar and it will not stop, but no application comes up, only in the taskbar. No icons will show up on my desktop either. When I go to open up the file manager, nothing comes up. Even when I try nautilus or sudo nautilus nothing happens. I read on another forum to use gconf-editor and nothing fixed it. What do I do? I need to have my computer fixed for school. I am running Ubuntu x86 64-bit on a HP Pavilion tx2500z laptop.

startx /usr/bin/startkdeBut using it disables sound in KDE (Sound is working fine in GNOME). It doesn't sound for anything like login sound, totem, mplayer or any other playerBut when I press Alt+Ctrl+F1 to change to virtual console, the playback resumes from where it was in time and when coming back Alt+Ctrl+F7 and the time in totem (or any other player) doesn't move. While log out also it doesn't play logout sound and doesn't logout, so I have to press Ctrl+Alt+F1 so that logout sound play then it exits.When starting KDE by kdm or gdm, the sound works normally. But I don't want to login again using kdm or gdm and not to use root user to start kdm or gdm.I don't know what is the difference between when KDE is started by startx or by kdm/gdm where the same user login in kdm/gdm as that for startx

Sep 30, 2010It started with Update Manager constantly recycling and not updating. When it starts it shows 295 files and 308MB waiting to download. When I click on 'Install Updates' it appears to go through the process, and then presents me with the same 'waiting to install' window again - and again, and again - in fact as many times as I care to click the 'Install Updates' button. No error messages appear. The 'Settings' button produces the same apparent process as the 'Install Updates' button, but doesn't present me with any other screen.
I've tried all the solutions I could find on these forums and nothing works. The sudo suggestions for Terminal usually produce error codes. adjusting a line in the 'hosts' file. When I tried this I was presented with the obstacle of not having access to the read-only file, and no matter how much I searched I couldn't find how to gain access . While investigating all these possible solutions, I was directed in turn to the Software Sources and Synaptic Package Manager applications, but when I attempted to start them, 'Starting Administrative Application' appeared briefly on the taskbar - and then disappeared!

Ubuntu :: Opening File Manager Endlessly Creating In Programs Bar. Can't Stop It?
Mar 8, 2010When I turn on my computer I am greeted by an unending stream of "Starting File Managers" appearing in the programs list. This cannot be stopped, though none of the file managers actually open. They just sit there filling up my programs bar and wasting my cpu slowing down computer. It also means I cant upon my own folders, or see what programs I have open.If I run terminal, type xkill and click on one of the buttons in the programs list, that kills them all, and I can see my programs again for a bit, until it fills up again. The panel disappears and appears again, with all the spawning messages gone and any other programs I have open remain there. Its just the randomly spawned "Starting File Managers" that don't come back.
My CPU fluctuates. Its around 60% to 90% load, when it should be idle, but is instead opening all these windows.When I view the processes the most CPU intensive (when I sort) is Gnome System Monitor at 6% and then Gnome panel at 5%,gconfd-2 is as around 2%, compiz.real, dbus-deamon hover around 1%. And everything else is generally at 0%.So somewhere, a hidden process is using about 70% of my CPU load. Which isn't shown in system-monitor. Maybe because its an admin process and I can only see simple user processes. I dunno.There is something else though. I have a process with no name appearing, its blank. And it keeps disappearing and re-appearing. So you can hardly select it hard enough to kill it. I managed to kill it once and it said error, process (large number, 10,000 or 100,000) does not exist. So can't be killed.When I do an xkill the console writes:

When I open Synaptic Package Manager, it asks for admin password. But, after I give the password, the window vanishes. Thus, I am not able to open Synaptic Package Manager in non-admin account.

I have gone to a couple locations and the files exist and the hash is correct, and the file types are correct. I have tried replacing the sources file. I have tried sudo rm -r /var/lib/apt/lists sudo apt-get clean sudo apt-get update with the same problem happening upon updating. In the same exact areas.
