I cannot open any programs at all like that. I am wrintg this from one of the user accounts, but the account i messed up is the adminitrator, so i need to get it up and running soon.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to install some administrative tools under the System -> Administration tab of the Desktop edition of Ubuntu, so that xinetd, chkconfig, netservices, etc can be controlled? I am left with an uneasy feeling about my Desktop version, and finding that it is running services that I really do not want to allow. Apache2 is running for example, but I really am not a web server (yet). Another service is strigi, the indexer. I prefer to have it turned off at times. What administrative tools does Ubuntu offer that can be placed in the sys-admin tab?

I have just upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. The installation process seems to be perfect. However, after I reboot, I can only see my previous desktop. But all the side bars are gone. The so-called Unity tools (sounds like Mac Dock) are not present at all. Now the only thing I can do is click my mouse on the desktop, open a terminal by right click, play things that have link on my desktop... I even cannot find the option to reboot or start Firefox.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.10 to dual-boot with XP Home on my Asus 1005HA netbook. The main hard drive is an OCZ Vertex 2 SSD. I've tried all the common tools for accessing the Ubuntu partition from inside XP, but none of them appears to work. Ext2IFS didn't let me assign drive letters - in fact, it doesn't seem to detect the Ubuntu partition at all. The Ext2IFS config tool in Control Panel looks like this (the SSD is 120 GB, and the Linux partition is 10GB as I recall):
explore2fs doesn't even start. Linux Reader can't open any drive, including flash drives and external HDDs.
I can't think of anything irregular about my system except the SSD. Could that be it?

My computer says the driver is installed and the device is present. All of that went fine. Now I need to connect my card to my house's wireless network. Am I supposed to do that in System-->Administration-->Network Tools? The problem is that whenever I click on network tools, the application looks like it is going to start-up and then quits/crashes/runs away, whatever. Any ideas on what is causing this?

I'm trying to connect to my universities VPN, but I keep getting the error "VPN Connection Failed", which isn't very helpful. These instructions assume I'm using the Cisco VPN client on Windows, but surely vpnc on Ubuntu is very similar? View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently purchased a Cyberpower CP1000PFCLCD UPS and much to my surprise when connected via USB to my PC (running Natty) the Gnome Power Management tool is able to see it and read some data, however the support is not complete. Gnome always thinks the UPS is supplying 0.0V although it is does properly read some data such as 'Time to empty'. Is it possible to configure the Gnome power application to properly speak to the UPS? If its not possible to have Gnome play nice with this UPS is it possible to at least have the UPS be ignored by the power mgmt tools?
I am able to use the Cyberpower utility but it would be slick to be able to use the Gnome tools for its history and statistics.
I would like to test network performance, to get statistic information. Is there any tools where I could specify partikular message size send as a constant for many times and in an output I could get time for each transaction? There is a tool called ApacheBench, it is for webserver testing, but I would like to find something similar for network testing. I have also tried Netpipe, Netperf, Iperf, but they do not show information in an output, which I would like to see.
