I am wanting to compile Firefox 5, which requires GTK+ 2.10, which requires glib 2.28, which requires zlib 1.2.5.When I install zlib 1.2.5, Ubuntu 10.04 brakes and I have to remove the zlib files for it to work again.Anyone got an idea why is this happening?Try it in a virtual machine and watch Ubuntu 10.04 fail.

I keep getting this error message when installing anything using the terminal or synaptic manager in ubuntu 10. I was installing pidgin when this message happened. The funny thing is pidgin did get installed and works fine. I am booting from a USB stick. I've recently installed fedora 12 and I'm trying to install setuptools using the following commands:

unable to install initramfs-tools error in Karmic I'm having a devilish time installing Karmic on my AMD 64-bit.
Today's missive is:
"Unable to install initramfs-tools."
"Check /var/log/syslog"
After a trying to fix a corrupted 9.04, I have attempted repeated installs of 9.10 on a completely reformatted clean drive. I can get the live CD working, but when I try the permanent install, using the guided full drive install, it stopped at "Unable to install initramfs-tools." and halts the base system install. I can't find anything on this for Karmic and Launchpad says it was superseded.
Can I skip this and go on? It showed a install list going forward, but if I can't put in the base system, how do I proceed? I've burned 2 9.10 disks, a new 9.04 disk, downloaded 9.10 via package manager while in Live CD and get errors on all during the install process. the check sums match on D/L, but I can't figure how to do a chksum after it's burned to disk. The file sizes do match, but when I go for the install something always halts it at different steps with different errors. No joy.

The only problem that I am having is that when I try to install vmware tools, by runnning ./vmware-install.pl in the terminal, I am prompted with this message: What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
If I press Enter, the same message pops up. I am fairly new to linux, and I am just setting this up so I can set up a web server on this virtual machine for testing purposes.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and previously had a separate partition with another distro on it. I decided to delete the other distro's home and swap partitions and install XP in place of it. I've been following these instructions: [URL] and [URL] I have gotten to the point where I am booting to the XP CD and want to install it, but I get the message, "Setup did not find any hard disks installed on your computer" when I should be getting to the screen that asks me to select a partition to install XP on. This is what my HDD looks like in GParted:
I want to install XP in the unallocated partition, but I have a feeling I screwed up somewhere along the way and probably don't fully understand the whole thing. Even if I try to format the unallocated partition to NTFS I can't make it a primary partition (I assume because it's within sda2). The very last thing I want to do is delete my Ubuntu partition and start from scratch, but if that's my last option let me know.
I login as normal user. I can 'su root' fine - password authenticates. However, If I try to run System->Administration->Users/Groups, when it asks for root password, it is rejected. When I run updater, it reports failure to authenticate, but doesn't even ask for root password beforehand. Is there a cached password someplace?

This means that I want to be able to create/change files myself, but php should be able to do the same. I installed a lamp-stack using tasksel. Afterwards I installed phpmyadmin. So far so good. Going to http://localhost shows "it works".
Then I created a folder /home/hwc/www and created a new apache site called hwc, disabled default and enabled hwc that points to /home/hwc/www and has the directive AllowOveride All set. But when I go to http://localhost know I get a 403 Permission denied error. I've tried several trings like changing ownership of /home/hwc/www to www-data:www-data, to hwc:www-data, to hwc:hwc, but all to no avail. Even adding www-data to group hwc and hwc to group ww-data did not help. According to other posts at least on of these solutions should have worked, but it did not. I could probably fix it by letting apache run as hwc, but that doesn't seem right.
I had setup an encrypted home directory on my computer, following all the instructions. However, after one reboot, ecryptfs told me "ERROR: Encrypted directory not setup properly." So I rebooted into an Ubuntu Live CD and ran ecryptfs-recover-private. It found my encrypted dir and asked for my login passphrase. I entered it and it told me, "ERROR: The key required to access this private data is not available." Is there any brute force way to recover the key?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm currently running Koala on a Dell Latitude D630. I've been with Ubuntu since Hardy, so I have some experience, but this is beyond me. Basically, I was at school, closed my laptop, and bicycled home. When I opened it up at home, I saw a blank screen. When I tried to reboot, I was told that the disk couldn't be mounted. When I boot a LiveCD, I can see my two disk partitions (/ and /home) as "16GB Filesystem" and "95GB Filesystem". The 16GB system can't be mounted, and I'm pretty sure is fragged. I tried reinstalling Ubuntu, figuring that would fix it, but no luck- it starts fine, but it gets about halfway through and then says it can't install the files.
The machine is still under a service contract with Dell, so swapping out the HD itself isn't such a big deal. It would be nice to get my data, though. I can successfully mount the 95GB (/home) system. I then see two folders "dan/" and "lost+found/". I can't enter the "dan" folder because I don't have permission. Opening a terminal and navigating to /media/95GB Filestystem/dan/ works if I "sudo su root" first, but not as "ubuntu" In the dan/ folder, all I see is "Access-your-private-data.desktop" (because my /home directory is encrypted) and "README.txt". The README says to run the command "encryptfs-mount-private".
When I do that, however, I just get the message ERROR: Encrypted private directory is not setup properly I tried putting my decryption password immediately after the decrypt command, a la: encryptfs-mount-private mypasswordgoeshere but with no change in results. The one ray of sunshine in all this is that I backup my /home directory to an external every week or two. So the actual data loss is not catastrophic. But it *has* been a busy week, so I would really like to recoup that data, since it includes little things like the first chapter of my dissertation, and the job negotiation emails in my .evolution folder.
I would like to install pymedia on my ubuntu 9.10 karmic distribution, but I am having a bit of a hard time doing that.I managed to install all the libraries (lame, libogg, libvorbis etc.) but when trying to run 'python setup.py build' I get an error (Shown at the end).I found on the interwebs that it may have to do with the version of gcc c++ compiler running (currently gcc-4.4) and that it only works with gcc-3.x. Therefore I downloaded gcc-3.4 (from the old jaunty archive), and with this one still no joy.NebelhomP.S. I am not a complete newcomer to linux and python but I am not an expert so it may happen that I ask questions with a very obvious answer.

I tried a lot of stuff using chmod and chown, but all to no avail. I tried to change the ownership of the /home/name/web to root, and to www-data, I changed file permissions to allow executing the files.
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit on my mac as a seperate OS, but I can't get my Internet working. It's wireless and Ubuntu isn't seeing any of the wireless networks in the area. I have installed ndiswrapper and tried installing a driver for my network but it didn't work.t=616801 but when typed in this code: "ndiswrapper -i bcmwl5.inf && modprobe ndiswrapper" I got the "No such file or directory at usr sbin ndiswrapper line 219" error
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm new around here and pretty new to ubuntu and linux in general. I am setting Up an sftp server. I set it up using openssh and it worked fine for a few months. Then recently we experienced a power outage. Now the server will boot fine, all users can login locally, but when they try to login remotely they enter their user info and then are denied with some generic network error. Again, being a noob at this I tried to trouble shoot this a little bit but I'm not quite sure what to look for. I believe the ssh service is running but I don't know what else to look for.
