I keep getting this error message when installing anything using the terminal or synaptic manager in ubuntu 10. I was installing pidgin when this message happened. The funny thing is pidgin did get installed and works fine. I am booting from a USB stick. I am using the perdition version which saves any changes i make to ubuntu on the USB stick.E: initramfs-tools: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1E: bcmwl-kernel-source: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
unable to install initramfs-tools error in Karmic I'm having a devilish time installing Karmic on my AMD 64-bit.
Today's missive is: "Unable to install initramfs-tools." "Check /var/log/syslog"
After a trying to fix a corrupted 9.04, I have attempted repeated installs of 9.10 on a completely reformatted clean drive. I can get the live CD working, but when I try the permanent install, using the guided full drive install, it stopped at "Unable to install initramfs-tools." and halts the base system install. I can't find anything on this for Karmic and Launchpad says it was superseded.
Can I skip this and go on? It showed a install list going forward, but if I can't put in the base system, how do I proceed? I've burned 2 9.10 disks, a new 9.04 disk, downloaded 9.10 via package manager while in Live CD and get errors on all during the install process. the check sums match on D/L, but I can't figure how to do a chksum after it's burned to disk. The file sizes do match, but when I go for the install something always halts it at different steps with different errors. No joy.
When I upgraded my 64bit System76 machine to Natty, I received an error message that initramfs-tools had failed to be upgraded properly. Nonetheless, when I restarted everything seemed to work as it was supposed to.However, every time I do an update the problem with initramfs-tools recurs. I get the following error message:

I put the CD in and boot the machine. The initial Ubuntu screen comes up ("Ubuntu" with the line of dots below it) for a few seconds, and then it disappears and I see this text:

At that point it hangs and will proceed no further. I've tried this with the latest Mythbuntu Live CD and the latest Ubuntu Desktop Edition Live CD. Both were x64 versions.
I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu 9.10 and used 'U904p' a program I had for creating 9.04 live USB I had before. I had 9.04 on the USB pen but thought that 9.10 would be better to install right away rather than upgrading it. So I run through the CLI and make it bootable and all that. I come to put in my pretty old (Spare parts mashed together) Linux box. I get this about 1 minute after the Ubuntu logo and loading bar:

Then I am dumped in to Busybox in initramfs command line. I have been googling and look around the forums all last night and this morning. I find loads of stuff from 9.04 but not 9.10? I tried the old 'Pull USB pen when Ubuntu log shows' and 'Changed SATA settings' turned them off in end, using IDE. Could it be that I created it using the old U904p program. I will look in to the newer one. Seen it about on forums. Otherwise any ideas? I am wanting to build a FOG box for imaging all my PC's and trailing it for work.
So i insert the ubuntu 10.10 in the dvd and boot it. The menu comes up and i choose to install ubuntu. After that it shows some black screens and this error:

I get the error when I open any of the kernel versions or any recovery mode. Ubuntu 10.10 Desktop is the only OS installed on the computer, which is a Lenovo S10-3. I can eventually get it to go away, sometimes by repeatedly unplugging it and plugging it back in, and sometimes I will boot into GParted, do nothing, then restart and it will work.I have found some solutions online, but all of them involve the error happening as a result of dual booting with Windows.I have made no major system changes recently, so I can't see anything like that being the problem.

Im trying to instal Sun Virtualbox but when download completes and I click on install I get the following error>>Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus) I wont even bother with this software if there are others out there that are as easy to use. I am trying to install Ubuntu on a nvidia board which, based on the forums I have perused, is a FAKERaid chipset. Originally I tried to install according to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FakeRaidHowto to no avail. I gave up and am resorting to breaking down my raid setup (thus losing my Windows XP installation) and using Linux's software raid (which seems to be the recommended method) with the Alternate CD install.
I went in to the bios and completely disabled my board's RAID function. I then followed the instructions here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/In...n/SoftwareRAID , except it popped up with a window advising me "one or more serial ATA RAID configurations have been found. Do you wish to activate these RAID devices?" which that page didn't mention. I believe I selected "Yes". Setting up the partitions I made (from beginning of disk to end of disk) a RAID1 200MB /boot partition, a RAID0 / partition (90GB?), free space not set up in RAID (approx 20GB for each SATA drive to later install Windows on [if that's even possible]) & then the SWAP partition 2GB at the end of one of the disks (is it OK that this one wasn't in RAID?).
The installation completed, as far as I can tell, without a hitch. Except also of note: my network card doesn't work in the installer (gives an error message about unable to configure dhcp) so i'm not connected to the internet. Then I restart and the following appears: grub loading: error: biosdisk read error. I'm trying to compile and install new kernel 2.6.32.14 in my ubuntu karmic. After compiling source and executing the deb package for the kernel, I tried to run update-initramfs but got "No space on device" error. My /boot partition size is 100 MB and is currently having 37MB free. After I run the update-initramfs command I noticed that space in /boot got depleted and soon came to naught which led to no space error thrown by gzip. I believe the resultant gzipped archive is no more than 20MB...then why is the whole 37MB is being used up? Please correct me If I'm wrong here otherwise I might be left with no choice but to increase the size of /boot partition. Is there anyway I can make update-initramfs to use the temporary space from other drives(may be /tmp) when creating gzipped archive?
I am trying to install Tracon Ubuntu Karmic Koala. In order to install Trac, setup tools needs to be installed.I have followed the instructions on this page;setuptools but when I run the 'python ez_setup.py' command I get the following error message

I been running both OS's for a few months now with no major problems besides wireless internet issues. Today, however, as I go to boot my laptop up, the Dell logo loads with the F2 and F12 boot and setup options which both work. Directly after that though I get the message "GRUB loading. Symbol '?' not found. Aborted. Press any key to Exit." then it repeats when I push a key, and then it tells me to press F1 to retry, F2 to go to setup, or F5 to run diagnostics. It passes all the tests in diagnostics. I've tried booting off of the ubuntu cd I used to load it initially with no luck. So I'm stuck at either that error message or in setup but I can't go any further, and it does not change anything when I tried to boot from the cd.
Gives error message permission denied. I've seen this in your forums but I still haven't found the fix. I've tried the latest release Wubi downloader too. This one is ran from a CD. Version 10.04
I'm trying to install ubuntu 10.10 on xp,but, after waiting around 2 hours per instalation I received a error message that says:" unbuntu installer : and error occurred: coercing to unicode: need string or buffer, none Type found. for more information see log file C:1customerlocals-1 empwubi-10.10-rev197.109. I tried on one particion make just for it then I even tried on xp on C: I even put it on a pendrive but my bios is old and do not provide for usb booting. The other thing I have to try is making a boot cd but for one reason or the other , my recorder do not want to recornized my cds- rw and right now I do not have any regular blank cds . That will be my next step. Note: Ubuntu appears installed on the the control panel "add or removed programs" but not in "all programs" list. I'm a novice on this so maybe the answer was posted but I couldn't find it. Looking ahead to try it and be part of the linux team.

I have Vmware Fusion 2.0.6 (196839) running on my MacBook Pro. I installed Fedora 11 on the fusion and it works fine. The only problem that I am having is that when I try to install vmware tools, by runnning ./vmware-install.pl in the terminal, I am prompted with this message: What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
If I press Enter, the same message pops up. I am fairly new to linux, and I am just setting this up so I can set up a web server on this virtual machine for testing purposes.
I have Ubuntu Jaunty & Linux Multimedia Studio 0.4.2. In attempt to update to LMMS 0.4.5, I downloaded & attempted to install : lmms_0.4.5~ppa-1jaunty_i386.deb and got the following error message : Error : Dependency is not satisfiable : lmms-common (=0.4.5~ppa-1jaunty). What went wrong and is there an easier way to update ? Also, should I remove the older version or just install the latest on top of it ?

When I send mail via Evoultion it does seem to send ok but still the following error message comes up: Error while sending message. Failed to append to : Unknown error Appending to local 'Sent' folder instead. Not sure what's up with that but thought I would mention it.
Greetings from Greece. I tried to install opensuse 11.3 in an empty disk . Unfortunately the installation progress stops in 88% and the message error says "error copy live image to the disk". I have burn two different cd but the result is always the same.Is it a hardware problem or the cd is not correct?I had the 11.2 version in the same pc without any problem for a long time.
I login as normal user. I can 'su root' fine - password authenticates. However, If I try to run System->Administration->Users/Groups, when it asks for root password, it is rejected. When I run updater, it reports failure to authenticate, but doesn't even ask for root password beforehand. Is there a cached password someplace?
I have a problem with Transmission. After using it for over six months without a single problem, it suddenly stopped downloading. In the torrents that do no get downloaded, I get an error message Tracker responded: Unknown error (0) in the info window, tracker tab. But there are torrents with the same tracker that don'thave a problem and get downloaded fineThe logs don't give a clue about whats wrong either.I tried downloading those torrents with Vuze and I had the same problem. What could be wrong?
when I connect my iphone (3GS, 4.3.3) to Fedora 15 it gives me this error: Unable to mount iphone DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus). The weird thing: after looking in var/log/messages it appears that it is trying to be used by NetworkManager. And when I lookin NM, i can see iPhone as an ethernet device (cable unplugged).
