Ubuntu :: PAM Failure For Sever Login - Critical Error
Jul 29, 2011
When I try to login to my Ubuntu Server, I get the following error:
PAM Failure, aborting: Critical error - immediate abort
This occurs when I try to log in locally, or via SSH. I have tried logging in using every account and all create the same error. Ubuntu server edition 11.
System was fine with :Ubuntu 9.04 (had also installed kde )then....I wanted to try some change to gdm so i downloaded gdm while building it , it asked "PAM" libraries to be installed so i installed PAM ... but ignored the instruction to reinstall SHADOW (library i guess..),Now :on booting system i get login menu but i am not able to login , it says some critical error occured
1) install new copy of UBUNTU and remove old
ps :1) i can log into system through live cd
2) i can use recovery mode boot and log into terminal as root(startx is not working from this terminal..
I have 10.04 desktop basically running xbmc sabnzbd and as a file server. the loads aren't too large as it is just for my house. But i moved from a server install to the desktop because of sound issues and running xbmc at start was a bit of a pain... so bit of background done.
My problem is that after installing 10.04 i got the disk utility pop-up saying one of samsung spinpoint 1tb (HD103UJ) has a critical error... now i didn't panic (although in the next couple of months i am intending to get another drive) but in the meantime i am simply wondering if this is a false flag? i've been getting this error for over 6 months now... pretty much from the last time i formatted the disk, i wiped it and then used dd to copy over a smaller partition, after which i used gparted to grow the partition to the whole drive. could this have created a false flag?
The 184 error is the only one, here is all the data i can glean from my system, attached is a screen of the relevent info from the disk utility, and this it from smartctl:
Code:
Selective self-test flags (0x0):
After scanning selected spans, do NOT read-scan remainder of disk.
If Selective self-test is pending on power-up, resume after 0 minute delay.
Why does GNOME fail to start correctly after compiling the latest version of Zlib?
I have analyzed the situation. Zlib does not change or delete any file on the file system.
I have asked this on three occasions over the last 8 months and no one has been able to give me an explanation, so it would be a great challenge for the Ubuntu lovers. I am also EXTREMITY interested to find out why, because I have had a hard spot negative opinion against GNOME since this occurred.
I was having a problem with the keyring asking me for a password after I changed my user password. I googled it and found that since the password changed, I will get asked for the keyring password until I delete ~/.gnome2/keyrings/login.keyring. What happened was that I wasn't paying attention that you had to generate a new keyring password before rebooting.
Now, whenever I try to login via gdm, I get this message: error initiating conversation with authentication system - general failure
How do I get it working again? I can still login from the terminal.
I've scanned a document with OmniPage on a Windows PC; I've saved the images as black and white png and I can open them on Windows, but on Ubuntu Eye of GNOME gives me (for one image only) the critical error PNG: Decompression Error and doesn't open it, while Mirage, GIMP, GQview and F-Spot show an empty image. The output of a pngcheck -vtf follows:
Quote:
File: [...] (101408 bytes) chunk IHDR at offset 0x0000c, length 13 2480 x 3507 image, 1-bit grayscale, non-interlaced chunk tEXt at offset 0x00025, length 13, keyword: Software
i need to install nagios-plugins 64 bit, when i tried to install via yum i got this error yum install nagios-plugins.x86_64 yum error Unsatisfied dependency i hv installed openssl 32 bit but it needs openssl 64 bit, even php and perl. i tried to to install via yum yum install openssl.x84_64 but its not getting installed i tried to uninstall openssl but its shows so many packages to remove
i have a dell server. its a couple of years old and has a perc 4 raid controller in it. When i do an install it shows the drives configured in the raid 5 configuration. i select the disk and do an auto partition. It goes for about 10min then errors with "error formatting drive volgoup00 the error is serious occurred press enter to reboot" or something like that can remember all the words. It doesn't give any info about the error.
i get the same error on centOs 5.5 and Ubuntu server 10.10
There is a firmware update for the raid controller that i could apply but dell's site was not letting me download it yesterday. Other than that I am not sure what to do. I could try an older version of CentOS 5.4 but i figure someone might tell me how to fix this so i can run the newest version.
I got the same error while installing (even though install works fine!) during installation and after it. Its Critical temperature reached, 3564 C, shutting down. Celcium value is not made up, its actually among those lines (four-digit).
I had another problem with installation, but I managed to install using nomodeset setting. My pc is a rock laptop (which is actually supposed to work well with vista instead.. oh wel..).
Any suggestions? I have tried installing with acpi=off, but it doesnt make any difference during installation or after it..
Also another error I got during some of my tests was: "init: Failed to spawn rc-sysinit main proccess: unable to open console: input error
1- The vfstpd is running on the Centos server. The server is in the same home network. The SeLinux and firewall are disabled. I can use Filzilla from a Windows PC from another computer and connect and see directory listing. There is a user names adminftp and he is a memeber of root group. When I try to upload or download I get an ftp critical error message.
2- How can I install Adobe Acrobat Reader, Flash Player and Adobe Shockwave on this Linux box?
I have two questions. 1- How can I set up FTP server for the first time on the Centos? 2-I want to give the ftp user full root access in the directory of /var/www/html so he would be able to upload or download files and folders without getting "FTP Critical file transfer error". From command prompt how can I give the user test root access in the /var/www/html with all the folders, sub folders and files in one shut?
And I added umask 022 to the user login script problem I have: I login with user and password that exists as a local user on my suse machine. I can read and download from my homedirectory, but I cannot upload with filezilla. Then I get the error: 550 permission denied critical file transfer error
I just installed Ubuntu 10.10 and when I try to log in to the regular desktop environment, only the backsplash coloring is there. I can, however log into safe mode and see the GUI there. Occasionally, I will get the treat of using the regular desktop environment, but it will ultimately freeze, and if I go to a different runlevel and restart gdm, the same thing happens....only backsplash. Here's what I've looked into, all of which has failed by the way: gdm.conf, URL... even though that "fix" was for an earlier release, and of course reinstalling a few times. *Sigh*I'm running it on a Toshiba Satellite L25-S1217, Intel Celeron, 874MB RAM, and 60GB HD with the stock Radeon graphics card.
I'm trying to sync a folder between my Windows install and my PCLinux install. Same machine, Windows 7 on the C drive and Linux on an external USB hard drive.
Using the Grsync GUI, I searched for the source and destination folders, and then executed the command. Here is the output:
I have a computer with three video cards and six monitors. Works great on Windows. Trying to get it to run Ubuntu 10.4 as well. It loads fine when I have it configured to run on one adapter; detects both screens, runs ok. But I want to turn the other 4 monitors on and run the whole thing as one extended desktop (one session, etc). So I downloaded and installed the newest ATI driver for Linux, which seems to work, kinda. I ran this to set up the screens:
aticonfig --adapter=all --initial -f Now when I boot, Ubuntu seems to turn on all the screens (3 viewports, each with two cloned displays from what I can tell). When I enter my login info OR move the mouse off the main screen, the screens freeze and the kbd/ms become unresponsive.
After upgrading several packages (can't remember which now) I can't login with the graphical login. It accepts the password, starts to load, but then dies and dumps me back at the login prompt again.Attempting to login from the prompt, sometimes works (there is specific condition), and when it does, I then attempt to "startx". OK, it complains the display is already in use, so I then "startx -- :1". Everything starts to load, but then fails again like the graphical login.
checking /var/log/Xorg.1.log I see no errors [EE].checking /home/***/.xsession-errors I see the following.xauth: file /home/***/.serverauth.15914 does not existI have also tried as another forum suggested and rename the .kde4 and the .skel directories to something else. Login via graphical and prompt still both fail.I have also tried logging in with another window manger. That also fails. However, I have also tried creating a new user and logging in. That works. It is from this user account that I write the postI have attempted copying over all of the application settings from the corrupted user account, but some things are missing and there are various personal project directories and permissions that are causing issues. Therefore I would like to repair the corrupted account. Where do I begin to fix the corrupted account?OS: Linux 3.0.1-40-desktop i686System: openSUSE 11.4 (i586)KDE: 4.6.5 (4.6.5) "release 4"Video: nouveau
I am getting a problem when login into FC10. It boots correctly an shows the login screen; then, when typing my user and passwd goes to the desktop and shows a KERNEL FAILURE. At this moment, most of the times the PC is blocked and doesnt works any more. One time has continued working without problems.
After the las failure, my system log has this info:
Code:
I have checked my hard disks (fsck) y every thing looks fine. However, i dont know how to fsck the VolGroup0. I cant'get it unmounted.
I'm testing to log in using openldap authentication on jessie by following article from [URL] ..... and when I try to log in from ldap client (another debian 8 VM), it failed with
Code: Select allFeb 3 09:25:33 clt nscd: nss_ldap: could not connect to any LDAP server as cn=admin,dc=test,dc=lab - Can't contact LDAP server Feb 3 09:25:33 clt nscd: nss_ldap: failed to bind to LDAP server ldap:///192.168.191.120: Can't contact LDAP server Feb 3 09:25:33 clt nscd: nss_ldap: reconnecting to LDAP server... Feb 3 09:25:33 clt nscd: nss_ldap: could not connect to any LDAP server as cn=admin,dc=test,dc=lab - Can't contact LDAP server
I want to count the failure root login attempts so that do an action when the user faild to login as root for three consecutive times (like log a line in syslog).
Debian 5.0. Lately after login following warning popup;Your system had a kernel failure
There is diagnostic information availiable for this failure. Do you want to submit this infomation to the www.kerneloops.org
-> Yes
$ uname -aLinux vm0.debian50 2.6.26-2-686 #1 SMP Wed May 12 21:56:10 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux
Reboot to old kernel 2.6.26-1 the said warning doesn't popup. Reboot again to kernel 2.6.26-2 and after login no kernel failure warning popup. I did it twice. IIRC I encountered this problem before.
I'm new to Debian and installed it with Cinnamon because I want to learn some OpenCL programming in Linux. I have a Nvidia GT 525M GPU. Once the operating system is installed, I followed [URL] ..... article to install the proprietary Nvidia drivers. As the forum suggested, instead of creating an Xorg server configuration file, I installed Bumblebee according to [URL]..... article.
But when I restarted my machine after completing all the steps when I try to log in I get the follwoing message:
Today I installed suse 11.1 on my computer. After some time i was able to connect to the internet and the auto update program prompted for updates. after the updates were installed more updates were prompted. but now i get an error when i try to install them. edit: the error is "PackageKit Error internal-error: Installation aborted by user " if i try it manually i get an message "access denied to ......" how can i make my system update normal?
I installed from a live disc months ago. It worked fine for a while, don't remember what caused the change.
Now when I boot, I get this message:
Quote:
I have several hdds in this desktop box, one other has a OS on it, has the Hardy version. But i disconnected that (it all used to work with both drives connected and I was able to use that boot menu to change from one OS to the other). I can boot by getting to "boot menu" by pushing the "esc" key when the bios starts (just after the beep). It gives the option to start from, with a list of possible devices to choose from. I don't know where this menu is from, bios or other. I select hard drive, then select the correct hard drive and it starts right up. That is nonsense though. I really no longer need version 8.04 but keep it as a backup in case my preferred OS/hdd fails.
When I try to upgrade ubuntu 9.10 to 10.04 I get the error message
Error during commit 'E:Couldn't configure pre-depend openoffice.org-core for openoffice.org-filter-binfilter, probably a dependency cycle.' Restoring original system state
After it finishes downloading the files. I completely removed all openoffice related files on my computer and i still get the message.
i have been running Ubuntu for about 3 days now, finally getting all my files moved back to the drive and what have you.I came from running windows, and an Android phone with full su access, and done up all custom-like..I am loving the speed, etc. great experience so far. BUT: the headphone port on my laptop is broken, and so I run [ran] and external soundcard, a Creative X-fi 5.1 USB SC. I have found linux drivers for this unit, and am trying to install. I have googled the crap out of how to do this, yet am getting stuck.
Here is where I'm getting stuck. I have extracted the package, entered into the sub folder, and am trying to run the Make install:
...laptop:/tmp/xfi-0.0.0.0$ cd ./xfi ...laptop:/tmp/xfi-0.0.0.0/xfi$ su -c "make install" Password: su: Authentication failure ...laptop:/tmp/xfi-0.0.0.0/xfi$
what in heck do i type at password... have I NOT done something, am I doing something wrong.... it does not accept my normal password, so I am lost.
