Jan 2, 2009We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

Apr 23, 2011I've installed Mandriva 10.10.2 and it seems ok, but I cant run any mp3 files nor will VLC have sound, but returns a pop up:
No suitable decoder module: VLC does not support the audio or video format "flac". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.
Mandriva directs me to a commercial dl site for me to purchase the necessary (?) software. Is that my only option/

Mar 25, 2011i'm worst than a noob when it comes to computers all i use my old acer aspire one for is watching the odd you tube clip,anyway i fired up my acer the other day and was greeted with the message "ive got to install latest macromedia plugin to watch this video.....Ive tried all i can to get flashplayer,i downloaded yum,tar,rpm..tried troublshooting the various forums for tips on getting it installed but to no avail.im running linpus and my acer is quite old.Believe it or not ive even managed to find out how to get root user priveleges still doesnt help though,ive downloaded and extacted more than i can remember lol tried copying to differnt destinations but nothing......one said to copy file to /usr/lib/opera/plugins...but i get message say i dont have authority for that.but i know how in terminal to get root.

Nov 21, 2009I just wanted to put Gnuplot on my machine to try it . I have Fedora11 and I have a copy of this program on my installation disk. Yum install goes off and wastes 10 minutes updating its list of files in the repositoryand then starts to deal with what I want. It does not give me the opportunity to say "hey its on this disk already" go get it there . No it unnecessarily updates all its records? Next time I want something it will do the same even an hour or so later WHY?

Oct 8, 2010I can not seem to find a pdf viewer browser plugin other than the actual craprobat plugin from Adobe. The default Ubuntu install comes with a perfectly good open source stand alone pdf viewer, but this means that the browser has to save it to your download directory then run the external viewer, and eventually your download directory is all cluttered up. I would much rather just view the pdf in the browser.Is there no open source browser plugin?

Mar 29, 2010I'm taking a very large collection of music and also newly purchased anime DVDs and adding them to another large existing collection, basically hundreds of ogg/mp3 and OGV-type files on a jukebox system to serve to my PS3 via mediatomb. (No, I'm not handing out copies and risking the feds at my door! I'm just trying to save my CDs and DVDs from ruin by over-replaying.)
My problem is I want to save electricity and minimize my carbon footprint but also I need a LOT of terabytes for what I have and what I will have, since these are going to be DVD quality (and later Blu-Ray quality) movies playing on a big TV from the PS3. I want RAID 6 level redundancy so that when 2 or even 3 drives fail (as Murphy's Law says they will want to do all at once), I can still recover. (Yes, I'm an insurance dude, with all the risk aversion that this implies)
What would y'all suggest that I do here, short of getting the same energy-hogging racks in corporate server rooms? Is there a way to "go green" with a multi terabyte multiple redundancy system or am I just wishfully thinking?

Apr 22, 2010I have been testing with the ATI Catalyst drivers. I have made a package from the 9.12. I have found that they were not working the way I want, so i tried to switch back via synaptic. I have removed everything which had to do to "fglrx"
now when I restart, here is the message i get

For information, it does start in low graphic mode. I have reinstalled the "fglrx" module, but the problem is still the same. If I reinstall the fglrx drivers from synaptic or terminal, I am back with the newer catalyst driver. I cannot switch back to the ubuntu repository one it seem.
I have done the following to try to get the open source back

I've had no success, however. It seems the most recent release is for Jaunty and I'm running Maverick. I guess there are some pretty well entrenched dependency issues. May 2, 2010Does anyone know if it's possible to grab the temperatures from an ATI card using the open source radeon driver (not fglrx/catalyst).
I must say that the radeon driver has come a long way and works wonderfully under Lucid for my needs. I'm just a bit worried about the lack of PM support and how high my temps might be. I would prefer some way to keep an eye on things

Jul 12, 2010I have been trying to get sound to work through the open source HDMI drivers, does anyone know how to do this?
I get a perfect picture through HDMI but no sound. The ATI HDMI option is not muted and is enabled. I dont know what else to do. I opened a terminal and did "aplay -l" and I can see the device in there. I DO get sound using the proprietary drivers supplied by ATI, but I get screen tearing and makes the picture look horrible.. So for now its Sound vs Picture quality... Why cant I have both :/
