Jan 2, 2009We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.
Debian :: How To Contribute To The Project
May 16, 2011I have been searching for information about the ways Debian allows for anyone wishing to give a helping hand to the project. I found that joining maintainer groups, helping in writing documentation, bug reporting and financial help are all accepted, but what I intend, was never mentioned.
Is it possible to help Debian by submitting original source code? Yes, it is true that I contacted GNU about this, but the decision is still mine, and GNU is not binding me to give my source to them.
The source code I am talking about, took more than a year to complete and debug, and has been working without problems for more than ten years. Furthermore, it has no dependences as it does NOT delegate part of its functionality to other existing projects.
Although, I am still in my early forties, and as far as I know, I don't have any life threatening illness, we are all mortal, and I don't want my work, that took many months of hard work and concentration, to be erased to make room for the only operating system my heirs know.

Mar 12, 2011I would like to contribute to Linux community (development of OSes, applications, etc...) somehow, but I don't know how... My interest is to get back to the community the joys they have given me over the years, and to extend my knowledge in Linux.I have 5+ years of user and sys admin level of experiences with UNIX/Linux, and some programming skills in Perl/PHP/C. I enjoy finding and fixing problems.Maybe I can start testing OSes or applications? Would anyone have any suggestions for me where or how to start? I would like to hear opinions from anyone who is doing or has done so.

Oct 8, 2010I can not seem to find a pdf viewer browser plugin other than the actual craprobat plugin from Adobe. The default Ubuntu install comes with a perfectly good open source stand alone pdf viewer, but this means that the browser has to save it to your download directory then run the external viewer, and eventually your download directory is all cluttered up. I would much rather just view the pdf in the browser.Is there no open source browser plugin?

Apr 22, 2010I have been testing with the ATI Catalyst drivers. I have made a package from the 9.12. I have found that they were not working the way I want, so i tried to switch back via synaptic. I have removed everything which had to do to "fglrx"
now when I restart, here is the message i get

For information, it does start in low graphic mode. I have reinstalled the "fglrx" module, but the problem is still the same. If I reinstall the fglrx drivers from synaptic or terminal, I am back with the newer catalyst driver. I cannot switch back to the ubuntu repository one it seem.
I have done the following to try to get the open source back

I still have the same problem. Now I do not have any package installed with "fglrx" I have reconfigured xserver-xorg and it will only start in low graphic mode.

I've had no success, however. It seems the most recent release is for Jaunty and I'm running Maverick. I guess there are some pretty well entrenched dependency issues. May 2, 2010Does anyone know if it's possible to grab the temperatures from an ATI card using the open source radeon driver (not fglrx/catalyst).
I must say that the radeon driver has come a long way and works wonderfully under Lucid for my needs. I'm just a bit worried about the lack of PM support and how high my temps might be. I would prefer some way to keep an eye on things

Jul 12, 2010I have been trying to get sound to work through the open source HDMI drivers, does anyone know how to do this?
I get a perfect picture through HDMI but no sound. The ATI HDMI option is not muted and is enabled. I dont know what else to do. I opened a terminal and did "aplay -l" and I can see the device in there. I DO get sound using the proprietary drivers supplied by ATI, but I get screen tearing and makes the picture look horrible.. So for now its Sound vs Picture quality... Why cant I have both :/

Mar 13, 2011I have an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series (I believe 5470, but I forget). I installed the open source ATI drivers using instructions at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RadeonDriver. Wonderfully, this gives me triple monitor support (LVDS, VGA, and HDMI at the same time), which the proprietary drivers couldn't do for me. But now I don't have 3D support (and XBMC crawls horribly as a result.) glxinfo shows me I have software rendering:

Apr 3, 2011I have an ATI Radeon 4200 HD Mobility, with 256 MB of my RAM dedicated to it. I installed FGLRX, but the performance actually dropped compared to the open source drivers that come installed by default. I removed fglrx, and reinstalled the Radeon packages, but no avail.
Now, when I boot, I get the error, "unable to load module 'fglrx'," and my only option is to run Ubuntu in Safe Graphics Mode. This tells me that the computer is still trying to load FGLRX, and there's something that needs to be altered down at the boot level.
