Just install 10.10 on a 4 gig flash drive, I like it a lot. Is there one download I can do to add all the non open source programs such as Flash, adobe reader, and such?

I've read about the open source PIM Chandler and how it's kind of a new twist on software of its kind (although I guess I missed the release by a few years...) and I've been dying to try it out. I've had no success, however. It seems the most recent release is for Jaunty and I'm running Maverick. I guess there are some pretty well entrenched dependency issues. These talk about it: here and here. There doesn't seem to be a solution anywhere.. Does anyone have a potential solution to this? Has anyone even heard of Chandler?

I also have 103GB free space on my machine. Is there perhaps a limit on the amount of data I can have per folder? I'm running 64bit Ubuntu.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a very quick question (and I can't believe I can't figure this one out myself: sorry). I installed 11.04 this weekend. Now, when I download, say, a word doc using FireFox, LibreOffice doesn't by default open the file (instead, Wine tries to open it; but, alas, fails). Now, when I try to open with another application, when prompted by the Firefox download window, I have no idea how to allocate LibreOffice as the programme to open the download. I can navigate to the .libreoffice folder, for example, but then I'm presented with many other folders, with many files, etc, and I have no idea how to set LibreOffice to open the file.
I know I can save file to hard-drive, then open manually. However, I would like to be able to simply open the file directly with LibreOffice.
We all know we can install a linux system such as Fedora 10 and use it. Being linux, one should in principle get the source codes for everything that has been precompiled (except the proprietary drivers such as nvidia) in the installation DVDs/CDs. Where are the source codes ? Is there a place I can download them ?
To avoid confusion, I am not referring to the kernel source that can be compiled to give a linux kernel, but that does not include the drivers, such as intel_drv.so.
To be more specific, the intel graphic i810 driver has been built into any linux system, but where is the exact source? One answer may be that primary source intellinuxgraphics.com. However, if anyone tries to download the every changing (i.e., keep updated almost every single day) driver source codes from freedesktop.org, it is almost certain that the source codes will not be the same as the one that is finalized in Fedora 10.

So, as I want to try Debian I am facing the same problem again. Problem is that my GPU is overheating. I am using Ati open source driver. I installed it following the procedure on Debian wiki. On Arch I solved it with proprietary driver fglrx. I tried the same solution here but it doesn't work. So I am stuck with open source drivers.
The difference between Arch and Debian (fglrx vs. Ati open source) is 10 C degrees. Debian Ati open source is much hotter. And ofc I am facing the low battery life too, because of this. My laptop is using much higher energy consumption with open source driver (almost double). How can I check my energy consumption on Debian? I read about some xorg options. I tried it, but no effect. As I am on Debian testing I am using kernel 2.6.32. Does this kernel supports xorg video energy consumption options?

I tried both of the below "solutions" and logged out and logged back in to openSUSE and it still uses EasyTag! Is it because I need a restart or is it something else?

Well Ubuntu 10.10 desktop edition looks great and I am way over the plain old xp, plus Ubuntu is safer and sexier. I have downloaded 10.10 desktop and it saves as a .iso, then when I open it it runs my cd burner. I have it saved on a CD and my portable hard drive. I can not run the .iso or use the wubi. I have extracted the .iso and tried running the usb creator program but it does not work. Does anyone have a solution other than buying the ubuntu cd?

The default Ubuntu install comes with a perfectly good open source stand alone pdf viewer, but this means that the browser has to save it to your download directory then run the external viewer, and eventually your download directory is all cluttered up. I would much rather just view the pdf in the browser.Is there no open source browser plugin?

I need all the flavors of Ubuntu.I prefer to download by torrent because it is faster with my connection. View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been testing with the ATI Catalyst drivers. I have made a package from the 9.12. I have found that they were not working the way I want, so i tried to switch back via synaptic. I have removed everything which had to do to "fglrx"
now when I restart, here is the message i get

For information, it does start in low graphic mode. I have reinstalled the "fglrx" module, but the problem is still the same. If I reinstall the fglrx drivers from synaptic or terminal, I am back with the newer catalyst driver. I cannot switch back to the ubuntu repository one it seem.

I was a casual mac user before thius and am used to packages--so I have no exp. installing tarballs. I am trying to install xampp and successfully downloaded it, but now am at a loss as to what to do--nothing seems to be working. I am using firefox which for some reason is not saving to downloads even though that is what I have set in pref. Is there a way I can use apt-get for this (although my understanding of that isn't much better. I can't seem to find the relevant information in documentation.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using 10.04.2, and I find that whenever I'm trying update (whether using synaptic, or command-line apt-get), the package download starts off fine, but after downloading a few files (usually only 4 or 5), the next partial (ongoing) downloads become corrupt, all the remaining downloads stay in the partial folder and finally apt-get gives a size mismatch error .I'm forced to watch the update progress the entire time and wait for the downloads to corrupt (at this point the progress bar stops at say, "Downloading file 4 of 70" but the details show subsequent files are being downloaded)the update process and clean the /var/cache/apt/archives/partial folder (NOT the archives folder, or all the packages will have to be downloaded again). Then I restart the update and it picks up after the last successfully downloaded .deb.
Effectively, every such iteration downloads 3-5 .deb files successfully, and corrupts the remaining. Needless to say, if I'm upgrading 50 packages, it gets really frustratingI faced this problem even on new installations on my system as well as a friend's. Lucid, Maverik, Natty all have the same problem. By new installations, I mean on the very first boot, I setup the network (I'm behind a proxy server in a university) and that's it. I tried Linux Mint and it had the same problem.
I have an older iBook G4, which suffers to do anything remotely productive despite it's 1.2ghz PPC proc and 1gb of RAM. I was considering on putting the community version of Ubuntu on it just for funsies, but I want to be able to watch flash videos. Is there any sort of gnash or something that can play ..... videos on PPC chips, or am I better off just sticking with OSX 10.4 on it?

Super Boot Disk = A single boot disk that accomplishes a great many common tasks needed to rescue a system.some things that I am looking for in this would be: Virus scan, memory test, bootloader recovery, hard disk drive recovery/testing, gparted, clonzilla.and whatever else you could think of.I see that gparted and clonzilla both have live cd's available..but im looking to only carry one disk.
Does anyone know if it's possible to grab the temperatures from an ATI card using the open source radeon driver (not fglrx/catalyst).
I must say that the radeon driver has come a long way and works wonderfully under Lucid for my needs. I'm just a bit worried about the lack of PM support and how high my temps might be. I would prefer some way to keep an eye on things
Is there a good open source alternative to flash and/or java out there? I really don't want to support adobe and java irritates me because for some reason I can't install it without also installing firefox (why are they dependent?) so I'd like to try something else.
