Hardware :: BIG Home Archive Server - Money No Object?

Mar 29, 2010

I'm taking a very large collection of music and also newly purchased anime DVDs and adding them to another large existing collection, basically hundreds of ogg/mp3 and OGV-type files on a jukebox system to serve to my PS3 via mediatomb. (No, I'm not handing out copies and risking the feds at my door! I'm just trying to save my CDs and DVDs from ruin by over-replaying.)

My problem is I want to save electricity and minimize my carbon footprint but also I need a LOT of terabytes for what I have and what I will have, since these are going to be DVD quality (and later Blu-Ray quality) movies playing on a big TV from the PS3. I want RAID 6 level redundancy so that when 2 or even 3 drives fail (as Murphy's Law says they will want to do all at once), I can still recover. (Yes, I'm an insurance dude, with all the risk aversion that this implies)

What would y'all suggest that I do here, short of getting the same energy-hogging racks in corporate server rooms? Is there a way to "go green" with a multi terabyte multiple redundancy system or am I just wishfully thinking?

Hardware :: File Server - RAID Considerations - Bargain Hunting Vs Spending Money?

Feb 25, 2010

I was hoping I could pick your brains about this if anyone has the time!- I'm going to set up a file server for a record label who's office has fewer than 20 people. I would like it to have > 2TB storage on RAID 5. (To beat their current 2TB on a single disk). I feel like I have a pretty good candidate with this server from here:

1U Server - with 4 x Hot-swap SATA (1156pin) Dual-Core 2.8GHz - Intel Pentium G6950 - 3MB, 533 MHz, 1156pin 4GB memory [URL].. I can pick this up locally to avoid shipping but will have to pay CA state sales tax. About $1000 if I use software RAID, or a little over $1400 w/ their recommended RAID controller- LSI 3Ware 9650SE-4LPML I will buy 4 of these WD RE3 drives: (1TB for $160 w/ TLER for RAID)[URL].. How am I doing here? Am I spending too much? Where do YOU shop for fair priced servers? Would you consider a cheap 2nd hand PowerEdge or something - replacing the SCSI controller with an economical HighPoint RAID controller that supports 4 or 8 SATA2 drives..?

They are prepared to spend some money but I'd really don't want to waste money on anything too overkill. They are friends and also people I work for on occasion. I don't mean to open the can of worms about hardware RAID vs software RAID because the answer is clearly that hardware RAID is better. But for a simple file server? I could afford to get an 8 bay 2U server with room to grow if i didn't spend the cash on that fancy controller. However, I would love for them to see a red LED light up on the server when a drive fails. What would you do?

Last but not least. I'm planning on using ubuntu server + samba. Without starting a "which distro is best" thread, can any one warn me if ubuntu is a poor choice for a file server that they can just turn on an forget about? I've been cutting my teeth on Fedora/Ubuntu for a couple years now. I can still benefit from the ease of use an community support for ubuntu, but I'm not afraid to get my hands a little dirty if there is truly a better choice. But I don't want to curse at the computer. I just want to get the job done!

General :: Ubuntu 10.04 - Tar Command To Archive Home Directory

Sep 3, 2010

Ubuntu 10.04. As part of my nightly backup script I archive my home directory with the following command
tar -cvpzf /quitelarge/_mirror/mirror1/home-ken.gz /home/ken 2>> /quitelarge/_mirror/tar-error.log

It seems to work fine and I have recovered files from the archive on occasion. Actually I keep 7 rolling daily backups and a monthly burn to DVD. I had an sftp connection made by Nautilus to my server. Ubuntu for whatever reason places an icon on the desktop showing the connection. When I ran the script it decided to archive everything on my server - all 1.4 TB. I caught the problem when home-ken.gz was about 5 GB. I stopped the process, closed the sftp connection, rolled back the backups and tried again. This time I got a file of the expected size - about 45 MB.

In the error log I did find that the tar process was trying to suck the entire contents of the server into the archive file.
tar: /home/ken/.gvfs/sftp for ken on taylor10/proc/asound/ICH5/pcm0c/sub0: file changed as we read it
tar: /home/ken/.gvfs/sftp for ken on taylor10/proc/asound/ICH5/pcm0c: file changed as we read it
tar: /home/ken/.gvfs/sftp for ken on taylor10/proc/asound/ICH5: file changed as we read it
tar: /home/ken/.gvfs/sftp for ken on taylor10/proc/asound: file changed as we read it
tar: /home/ken/.gvfs/sftp for ken on taylor10/proc/scsi: file changed as we read it
tar: /home/ken/.gvfs/sftp for ken on taylor10/proc/acpi/event: Cannot open: Permission denied
tar: /home/ken/.gvfs/sftp for ken on taylor10/proc/acpi/fadt: Cannot open: Permission denied
tar: /home/ken/.gvfs/sftp for ken on taylor10/proc/acpi/dsdt: Cannot open: Permission denied
tar: /home/ken/.gvfs/sftp for ken on taylor10/proc/irq/21/smp_affinity: Cannot open: Permission denied

Is there an option I can place on the tar command to tell it NOT to follow the ssh connection which is sitting on my desktop? The closest thing I see in the documentation is -h which tells tar to "follow symlinks; archive and dump the files they point to." I am NOT specifying -h so if the ssh connection is treated as a symlink by tar I would still not expect the remote contents to be tarred.

Programming :: Object To Represent An Object Of Different Types?

Mar 1, 2010

Only ones I can think of seem overly complex, and I'm sure there is a simple solution I am overlooking. I have a class, it has a member who is an object. This object needs to be able to represent an object of different types.

[code]...

Where "surface" could be several different types, which will be set during execution. Hope this is clear enough. I have tried using templates but am getting "data member cannot be a member template". Either I have incorrect syntax, or am not implementing it right. another solution would have one class containing definitions of all possible shapes, But this would take up extra memory. Other solutions I thought of seem too round-about, and seems there is a simpler solution that I have overlooked.

Server :: Mail Archive On Shared Hosting?

Sep 27, 2010

I have a client that is looking for a way to archive their email (making it searchable, etc) -- all on a shared hosting account.

I was kind of thinking of having some way to parse/store email in a MySQL database and make it searchable using a PHP application. But I'm not sure how to parse the headers (if it's even possible to do so).

Any other ideas on this type of application? They are wanting a way to archive email, make it searchable, keep a record of all emails sent, etc. They're willing to "purchase" a mail server if necessary. But I'm hoping to find a way that they won't have to.

CentOS 5 Server :: Configure A Mail Server Over A Home Internet Connection?

Feb 12, 2009

I have one server at home, connected through a router that gives me a static IP:192.168.1.2 - My PC192.168.1.3 - CentOS serverI enabled the port 80 into router forwarding system and I can connect properly to CentOS server, using the IP my internet provider gives me. My router automatically forwards a changed IP to my dyndns.com account so I can also access the server through a domain name (I pay to have it linked to one of my domains). My next step is to configure the mail server (dovecot) , so I can send emails from my local server(192.168.1.3).I was wondering if anyone has any tutorial links or tips to have the mail server configured through a home internet provider + home router.
