After I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.4 I could see Ubuntu One in the Places menu. (and subsequently have access to my files etc there).I have now installed 10.4 on a new machine (clean install) and I don't seem to have access from 'Places' now. The only way I can get to it is via a web browser.Is it just hidden away somewhere? Or do I need to install some additional packages?

The Installation Guide says that if you install from the DVD (or, as I understand it, the five or so CDs) you get the choice of installing lots more software. I've now got a copy of the CD. But how do I use it to install the extra software it contains? The Installation Guide says use the Add/Remove Software tool. But that tries to download stuff from the Internet. Nothing about installing from the DVD.

Only icons left are Backward and Forward buttons. I have removed elementary repository and reinstalled the nautilus but it didn't restore the default nautilus. How can I restore it? View 5 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer Aspire One, Model PAV70 that had Windows 7 Starter on it. I booted Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB HDD and then formatted the Acer drive with Ubuntu. I then started installing Ubuntu on the newly formatted HDD and got an error near the end of the install. It said, "apt configuration problem, an attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the cd failed." After this happened the system locked up and I had to reboot. Now I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I can't get the system to recognize anything. What can I do?

I've got Ubuntu ReMix 10.04 successfully running off a 4-GB JumpDrive.When I go to installing additional software packages, the package "appears" to have installed itself onto the JumpDrive and into Ubuntu Remix 10.04.But, when I properly shut it down, and come back latter ... those software packages that appeared to have installed earlier, are no longer on the JumpDrive ! Nor, do they any longer show up on the NetBook ReMix menu tree.This has happened with AbiWord / Scribus / QCad / Gwelled and several other software packages.

The initial trouble I'm having is that this server is on an isolated network without Internet access. I'd like to use a Gnome desktop like I'm used to in order to get up to speed quickly.
How do I get additional packages for a system that is not on the Internet? The end goal for this machine is a simple file depository for a W98 network using Samba shares. To boot from an IDE drive and share a 5 drive software RAID5 for data storage.
What is the simplest way to combine an original installation CD with several hundred additional packages that I have downloaded since the installation? My goal is not to waste future bandwidth downloading packages I already have downloaded. Bandwidth has costs both in time and money.
Background Recently I started experimenting in earnest with Debian Lenny in VirtualBox. I am new to Debian but not Linux based systems. I have seen enough the past several days with my experiments that I would like to migrate from my current Linux based system to Debian.
I installed the Debian 5.03 KDE CD to a virtual machine. In the past several days I have downloaded and installed several hundred packages since the initial installation. I have encountered no major hiccups along the way.
For future use and safekeeping, I copied all of the downloaded packages from /var/cache/apt/archives to a different directory. To become more comfortable with the Debian installation process, I want to repeat the installation several times using the original 5.03 KDE CD --- and all of the subsequently downloaded packages.
As I am new to Debian I am looking for advice and instructions for the simplest way to perform these reinstallations. I would like to perform them without any internet connection. If I understand correctly, I can copy the additional packages to a DVD and then use apt-cdrom to add the disk to my sources.list. Then I should be able to 1) use the Debian 5.03 KDE CD to perform the initial installation, 2) install the additional packages manually. If I understand correctly, something like dpkg -i * should work with the additional packages? Doable?
The "common sense" way is to somehow merge the original Debian 5.03 KDE CD with my additional packages to create my own personal Debian 5.03 KDE Plus DVD for my personal installation use. All I would want is to merge the downloaded packages into the original CD to create my own installation DVD. Nothing fancy or dramatic. Being new to Debian I don't pretend to understand the Debian Installer mechanism. Yet I can tell from the original CD image that I need to merge my additional packages into the pool directory.
I found the wiki how-to for simple-cdd. I started to run the app but stopped because I was unsure how much bandwidth the app is using. The simple-cdd tool needs internet access, but is simple-cdd downloading all the deb packages again? I don't want any of the installed packages to be re-downloaded when I already have them at hand. I'm not comprehending the how-to very well or the various options. I also want to perform a complete installation without an internet connection.
I've got two files. They both contain package names. Is there any way I can go through the package list on one file, and search to see if each package exists in the other file? What I'd want to do, is if the package name is found in the the main file, then go to the next line. If its not found then print that package name to another file.
I know you can use diff, but it doesn't seem to be that straight forward. As I understand it diff searches line by line, so if line one doesn't match line one in another file, then it prints it out. That's not exactly what I want.
I just really need an easy way to filter out the additional packages that exist on a new server. If I have a list of packages that aren't on the original server, then i can just delete them.
Not sure if I've made any sense but there must be a quicker way to do what i need to. It would take me ages to scan manually through the package names in each list, and highlight the ones i dont need.
I'm trying to do a net install with the latest release of debian - but my ethernet card is not recognized/the drivers are not available because I have a card that requires a linux kernel version of 2.6.35. This is obviously a problem because I can't download any additional packages, and I can't update the version because I'm not able to connect to the internet. I have installed it, but it's only text (which I assume is because I could not install the graphical interface, correct me if I'm blaringly wrong here). So what can I do to install debian on my laptop and be able to use my Intel Centrino Advanced-N 620 network card?

My target is home desktop and I only want these : kdm, plasma, ark, dolphin, kdesu, konsole, okteta, kwrite, kate, kmix, ksnapshot. There are things I don't use but they get installed anyway and break kdm if removed. These things are : akonadi, strigi, nepomuk, virtuoso, kfind, kgreeter and a couple of others, including libqtzeitgeist0 and PIM in general. Also I don't want kdm 4.7 features hence I use kdm3 as a login manager. Is there a 4.7 build that doesn't mind the removal of so called base components? If not, is there a 4.4 repo for 11.4?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell XPS 420 with a 500gb SATA drive on which Windows Vista is installed. I also have an additional hard drive that I wish to install for an Ubuntu installation. Is it possible to create a dual boot system with Windows on the original HD and Ubuntu on the newly installed HD?
Simply put, my computer will have 2 hard drives. The original hard drive has Windows installed. I would like for the second drive to contain the Ubuntu install so that the only thing changed on the original drive is the MBR (I suppose that's how it would work).
I've seen may similar issues to mine, but some are different and others are identical, but have been resolved since in the repositories. I install Maverick from CD, reboot, update via update manager, reboot, install nVidia driver via additional hardware gui, reboot and I can't get into X, I get tty1 instead with a text login prompt.
dmesg tells me:

How do I install an additional kernel in Linux Ubuntu 10.10, in case of a boot failure? Also how do I make the Grub Menu Visible, so that I am able to select multiple kernels. There is an older solution below, but is there a way to do this in Linux Ubuntu 10.10. I just suffered an update failure, possibly due to a corrupt kernel upgrade, which made my system unbootable. The cursor just flashed continuously.

Kernels have occasionally been released with flaws that have caused one or more of my machines to not boot. To this end, I always make sure I have at least one perfectly running kernel on a machine. A great way to handle this is to first add plugins=1 in your /etc/yum.conf file. The next step is to take this script (written by Jeremy Katz from Red Hat) and save it as n-installonly.py in /usr/lib/yum-plugins. You can change the number of kernels to retain on the system by changing the tookeep variable (default = 2).
With a known working kernel on your system, you can upgrade safely. If the new kernel is hosed, simply boot the old kernel to solve the issue with the new kernel be it to remove it, recompile it, or update it."
I would like to try KDE and XFCE alongside the Gnome desktop but I cannot seem to find an easy way to simply install them. Add/Remove Software is completely useless with this.
View 14 Replies View RelatedAfter a recent update, when ever I attempt to open a ".ogv" extension from within Dolphin File Mananger in KDE4.4.2, I get a window that pops up every time for Checking For additional Software to install. It does this in spite of the fact I already have several players and the default set to SMPlayer to play the files. How do I turn this behavior off? It's really annoying because you either have to wait for it to finish checking (and finding nothing BTW) or Cancel it in order to play the file. This just started recently. I don't see anything obvious in Dolphin configuration, but I'm not even sure it's related to Dolphin at all.

I have installed this server in VirtualBox, everything seemed to go fine besides the fact that I accidentally hit the enter button when I was at the opportunity to install the additional software during the initial setup. I figured that it was no big deal as I could just use aptitude to get what I needed later. My first step was to get LAMP setup. Heres where it started to seem to go wrong: I installed Apache2, however, it seems that I am unable to test it (no browser).

I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.
I got to go to a competition and I have to use debian and win server 2008 in that comp. With the smallest (about 300MB) image, I couldn't add functions because the computer isn't allowed to connect internet, no APT. then, do I need to download all the images? I saw that full image was really huge.

I have seen how simple it is for Mac OS to generate pdf from a document without additional software to install. But I am looking for this functionality in Linux. One scenario, for example, if I have myDocument.txt that contain an article, how can I convert this into pdf? My next question is, assuming that myDocument.txt is a 3-paged document, will it generate a 3-page continuous pdf and not just 3 separate pdfs?
Any tools for linux that does this? (GUI is fine, but commandline is preferable)

Now I need to install the rest of it over the internet. So here are my questions:
1. Where can I find the additional files to install?
2. Where can I find a manual that tells you how to install them? This manual doesn't say anything about that.
3. Are you supposed to install the files during the installation process, or do you get them online through the minimal Debian (using wget, etc.)?
I need to run a proprietary VPN client (Aventail) that can't use the openssl libraries that are packaged with 64bit F10:The Fedora openssl package does something differently from the original openssl.org package that makes it incompatible with Aventail (see bugzilla ticket 477073) I also believe the Aventail client software requires 32-bit libraries. So, I've determined I need to install 32bit openssl directly from openssl.org, then link my Aventail client to that. Note that I don't want to replace the 64bit openssl libraries currently on my system.
Based on the Bugzilla ticket, I believe I know how to hook up Aventail before I install it simply by supplying a few specific soft links if I can make/compile/whatever the 32bit openssl.org libraries and keep them in their own isolated directory. how to get the 32bit openssl libraries installed in a little corner by themselves on my 64bit system. give a step-by-step on on the commands necessary to place a 32bit version of openssl all by itself in a directory of my choosing?
I'm using openSUSE 11.2, with some eSATA hard drives. For some reason, they're set to read-only, and I can't change it. I set parameters in fstab as fmask=113,dmask=002,umask=0002,rw Oddly, I was able to delete a file in there, but my samba users have read-only access, and I can't use chown or chmod: I get no error message, but nothing happens.
