OpenSUSE :: Can't Seem To Find Any Of The Additional Packages?
Apr 27, 2010
Could anyone let me which repository I need for Maxima? Also, I installed Octave from a different repository but I can't seem to find any of the additional packages, like the signals package for example.

After I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.4 I could see Ubuntu One in the Places menu. (and subsequently have access to my files etc there).I have now installed 10.4 on a new machine (clean install) and I don't seem to have access from 'Places' now. The only way I can get to it is via a web browser. Is it just hidden away somewhere? Or do I need to install some additional packages?

I've installed Fedora from the Live CD (Fedora 13). The Installation Guide says that if you install from the DVD (or, as I understand it, the five or so CDs) you get the choice of installing lots more software. I've now got a copy of the CD. But how do I use it to install the extra software it contains? The Installation Guide says use the Add/Remove Software tool. But that tries to download stuff from the Internet. Nothing about installing from the DVD.

I've got Ubuntu ReMix 10.04 successfully running off a 4-GB JumpDrive. When I go to installing additional software packages, the package "appears" to have installed itself onto the JumpDrive and into Ubuntu Remix 10.04.But, when I properly shut it down, and come back latter ... those software packages that appeared to have installed earlier, are no longer on the JumpDrive ! Nor, do they any longer show up on the NetBook ReMix menu tree. This has happened with AbiWord / Scribus / QCad / Gwelled and several other software packages.

What is the simplest way to combine an original installation CD with several hundred additional packages that I have downloaded since the installation? My goal is not to waste future bandwidth downloading packages I already have downloaded. Bandwidth has costs both in time and money.
Background Recently I started experimenting in earnest with Debian Lenny in VirtualBox. I am new to Debian but not Linux based systems. I have seen enough the past several days with my experiments that I would like to migrate from my current Linux based system to Debian.
I installed the Debian 5.03 KDE CD to a virtual machine. In the past several days I have downloaded and installed several hundred packages since the initial installation. I have encountered no major hiccups along the way.
For future use and safekeeping, I copied all of the downloaded packages from /var/cache/apt/archives to a different directory. To become more comfortable with the Debian installation process, I want to repeat the installation several times using the original 5.03 KDE CD --- and all of the subsequently downloaded packages.
As I am new to Debian I am looking for advice and instructions for the simplest way to perform these reinstallations. I would like to perform them without any internet connection. If I understand correctly, I can copy the additional packages to a DVD and then use apt-cdrom to add the disk to my sources.list. Then I should be able to 1) use the Debian 5.03 KDE CD to perform the initial installation, 2) install the additional packages manually. If I understand correctly, something like dpkg -i * should work with the additional packages? Doable?
The "common sense" way is to somehow merge the original Debian 5.03 KDE CD with my additional packages to create my own personal Debian 5.03 KDE Plus DVD for my personal installation use. All I would want is to merge the downloaded packages into the original CD to create my own installation DVD. Nothing fancy or dramatic. Being new to Debian I don't pretend to understand the Debian Installer mechanism. Yet I can tell from the original CD image that I need to merge my additional packages into the pool directory.
I found the wiki how-to for simple-cdd. I started to run the app but stopped because I was unsure how much bandwidth the app is using. The simple-cdd tool needs internet access, but is simple-cdd downloading all the deb packages again? I don't want any of the installed packages to be re-downloaded when I already have them at hand. I'm not comprehending the how-to very well or the various options. I also want to perform a complete installation without an internet connection.

I have created my first linux server using Ubuntu 10.04 server edition. My only experience with linux has been the desktop edition.
The initial trouble I'm having is that this server is on an isolated network without Internet access. I'd like to use a Gnome desktop like I'm used to in order to get up to speed quickly.
How do I get additional packages for a system that is not on the Internet? The end goal for this machine is a simple file depository for a W98 network using Samba shares. To boot from an IDE drive and share a 5 drive software RAID5 for data storage.

I've got two files. They both contain package names. Is there any way I can go through the package list on one file, and search to see if each package exists in the other file? What I'd want to do, is if the package name is found in the the main file, then go to the next line. If its not found then print that package name to another file.
I know you can use diff, but it doesn't seem to be that straight forward. As I understand it diff searches line by line, so if line one doesn't match line one in another file, then it prints it out. That's not exactly what I want.
I just really need an easy way to filter out the additional packages that exist on a new server. If I have a list of packages that aren't on the original server, then i can just delete them.
Not sure if I've made any sense but there must be a quicker way to do what i need to. It would take me ages to scan manually through the package names in each list, and highlight the ones i dont need.

I have installed nautilus-elementary but didn't like it. So I wanted to go back to regular nautilus but the gui items and icons are missing. Only icons left are Backward and Forward buttons. I have removed elementary repository and reinstalled the nautilus but it didn't restore the default nautilus. How can I restore it? Is there any additional packages to install?

I'm trying to do a net install with the latest release of debian - but my ethernet card is not recognized/the drivers are not available because I have a card that requires a linux kernel version of 2.6.35. This is obviously a problem because I can't download any additional packages, and I can't update the version because I'm not able to connect to the internet. I have installed it, but it's only text (which I assume is because I could not install the graphical interface, correct me if I'm blaringly wrong here). So what can I do to install debian on my laptop and be able to use my Intel Centrino Advanced-N 620 network card?

I have made a Debian minimal installer on a USB drive according to this manual: [URL] I have installed a minimal version of Debian, meaning text-only, with only the kernel, shell, filesystem, and a few programs. Now I need to install the rest of it over the internet. So here are my questions:
1. Where can I find the additional files to install?
2. Where can I find a manual that tells you how to install them? This manual doesn't say anything about that.
3. Are you supposed to install the files during the installation process, or do you get them online through the minimal Debian (using wget, etc.)?

I did the UPGRADE from Karmic Koala to Lucid, and everything was going well. But now I've been having problems with the UBUNTU UPDATE tool for the last 2 weeks. Every time I try to do an update check on the packages, I get the following message:Failed to fetch http:[url]....Release Unable to find expected entry deb-src/binary-i386/Packages in Meta-index file (malformed Release file?)
Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.I've tried changing the servers to MAIN and others, and still no way to solve it. I've also checked for other posts, but haven't found a solution yet. Here's my SOURCES LIST (gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list)# See http:[url].... for how to upgrade to # newer versions of the distribution.

I have an Acer Aspire One, Model PAV70 that had Windows 7 Starter on it. I booted Ubuntu 10.10 from a USB HDD and then formatted the Acer drive with Ubuntu. I then started installing Ubuntu on the newly formatted HDD and got an error near the end of the install. It said, "apt configuration problem, an attempt to configure apt to install additional packages from the cd failed." After this happened the system locked up and I had to reboot. Now I get a black screen with a white blinking cursor. I can't get the system to recognize anything. What can I do?

If I need an app and can't find it in software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.4 at all, is there any other place I should look for it? I mean, maintained and reasonably secure place, not Google. Or have I to resort to downloading sources from developer already?

After a recent update, when ever I attempt to open a ".ogv" extension from within Dolphin File Mananger in KDE4.4.2, I get a window that pops up every time for Checking For additional Software to install. It does this in spite of the fact I already have several players and the default set to SMPlayer to play the files. How do I turn this behavior off? It's really annoying because you either have to wait for it to finish checking (and finding nothing BTW) or Cancel it in order to play the file. This just started recently. I don't see anything obvious in Dolphin configuration, but I'm not even sure it's related to Dolphin at all.

I just upgraded from 11.2 to 11.4 and the installation/upgrade worked just perfect. I than followed the instructions in the "New User How To/FAQ", "Multimedia and restricted format" post. I was following the instruction in the 11.4 section. I added the additional repositories as explained. I then was on the section where it talks about going into software management and selecting the "Packman" repository and clicking to "switch systems packages" to the versions in this repository (packman). I than click this link and the "warning" screen appears and I am present with conflict resolution after conflict resolution dialog. It just seems that there are some many conflicts, it just seems wrong and I canceled.
The installation/upgrade appears to have worked just fine. My mail is there, audio and dvd play back worked the first try after the upgrade. I am not clear if this is what I should expect or their is something wrong or if I even need to complete this step for a successfully installation.

Can ext4 be defragged yet using e4defrag from some additional repositories? Couldn't find via the YaST software management repositories/online search and don't really want to manually recompile the kernel. Most (months old) post on the forum about it seem to indicate simply having to wait. The reason why I'm asking is because (samba) access to a single partition is extremely slow (30s rather than 4s) for opening 24m episodes of whatever. I suspect this to be due to fragmentation as that disk has been serving as the 'torrent disk' for several years now which is known to cause severe fragmentation. The only way to find out if this is caused by fragmentation would of course be to defragmentate it.
All samba shares are set up the exact same way (via YaST) btw, so fragmentation was the only logical conclusion I could come up which would lead to a gradual (over the years) drop in performance. Please spare me the "linux file systems don't need defragmentation" as the e4defrag tool wouldn't be developed if that was the case and this most likely falls under a worst use case scenario

I recently migrated from Ubuntu 10.10 to Opensuse 11.3
I sometimes need lxsplit to join splitted files.
In Ubuntu I installed lxsplit from the repos but I can't find it in the Add/Remove software, here in opensuse.
Do I need to enable any additional repos to install lxsplit?

I have a problem and I am on the way to become desparate. starting to hate and I hope that you can help me out of my misery so here it goes: I have an additional internal harddrive, which is formated with NTFS (because of having access with Windows). I want to make regular backups on this drive, using Back in Time. But this is not possible, because there is something weired with the permissions and user stuff.
In the YaST partioning manager I have set it so that I as a normal user can mount it. I have created a mount point named /media/Backup for the drive and it is entered in the YaST partitioner and also in the /etc/fstab. When I now do a rightclick on this folder in Dolphin and have a look at the owner of it, I see: root. Group: users.

Not sure if this goes here or the hardware section. I've added another sata drive to my system formatted to Ext4, but i have to put in my password for root priveliges (spell?) to access it. I can understand from a security point of view about the password, but there is no way to create new folders or even copy/paste data to it, as the options are not available with the right/click mouse. My external USB drive requires no password, and i can do all the usual functions with it, but not so with the internal sata drive. Is there a way to enable the internal drive for 'normal' operations.

After an upgrade to OpenSuse 11.3 KDE has gone to worse. I am beginning to believe that dark themes are impossible to use on the new KDE 4.4.4. The only theme that works properly is Air, but I find it to much white. Aya or Elegance theme have problems showing the buttons on plasma elements, so has any other theme but Air. Trying to switch to an additional dark color theme (Obsidian Coast) does not work properly either.
The buttons on plasma elements are invisible (the button panel that appears when the mouse is over an plasma element). Sometimes different elements are distorted, i.e. icons, text input boxes etc. I wonder how it is possible that the developers at KDE can make it worse. This worked perfectly on OpenSuse 11.2 and its KDE version.

I recently bought a BT dongle, a USB2 Asus. I then went through Yast2 to find any Bluetooth software and installed them, mainly Bluez and KBluetooth. Unfortunately the apps do not see any adapter, but when I use hwinfo, I get the following;
[code]...
the adapter is seen by the kernel, but the software to use it is not seeing the adapter. Looking at the System services I see bluez-coldplug enabled and running. I did a test on a Fedora v14 live DVD and it worked with no problems, no additional software was needed.

I'm using openSUSE 11.2, with some eSATA hard drives. For some reason, they're set to read-only, and I can't change it. I set parameters in fstab as fmask=113,dmask=002,umask=0002,rw Oddly, I was able to delete a file in there, but my samba users have read-only access, and I can't use chown or chmod: I get no error message, but nothing happens.
