I was able to install the newest version of Ubuntu on my laptop with ease, but my not on my home desktop. I installed it inside Windows, and my screen quickly goes to black when I turn the computer on. (This only happens when I boot Ubuntu)

I just did an update on an Ubuntu 10.4 LTS machine and it wanted to reboot so I did now I can't even get to the console. I think it's hanging up somewhere on the start up but thanks to the Microsoft like tell you nothing display I don't know for sure or what exactly is hanging up. The only thing the system responds too is ctrl alt del to reboot. Can't even ping it or log in via SSH. I already installed the same updates on this machine but luckily did not reboot it yet. I'm willing to bet whatever package broke the other one will break on this one and if I can figure out where it's breaking I can figure out how to fix it. That means seeing it start up not the blank screen I'm getting. Been meaning to find out about this anyway as the graphics thing annoys me to no end. I prefer to see what services error or fail rather than find out weeks later when I thought my back up service was running and it wasn't or that snort never did run or I'm looking through the logs and discover there's a problem that's been going on for weeks that I never noticed until I went through the logs about something else.
So how do you switch to a detailed start up mode?

The startup and shutdown displays are a series of vertical black and white lines, and the text displayed on them appears as more or less white blobs. Otherwise, the displays when 11.04 is running are fine, but this startup looks so naff it would be nice to change it so that the diplays can be read. I would hate to demonstrate Ubuntu to someone and have to explain such a display.

Hi I am new to ubuntu and am having major problems setting my displays up. my setup is a hd TV to the Left of my pc monitor, i have managed to configure catalyst to let me have a main display with the second display being an extension of the first, the problem is i cannot seem to swap my primary display, at the minute my HDTV has all the taskbars and everything on it while my pc monitor is just a blank background, i would like it so i could start a film playing for my children, then drag it across to the HDTV while i can still use my pc in the background.

I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).
I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.
I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

I did not have any /etc/X11/xorg.conf, so I read on these forums that system-config-display would create one for me. I ran system-config-display and it created an xorg.conf. But now my display is all messed up!! So, I deleted the xorg.conf and nothing changed. Why on earth would the display still be messed up if I deleted the file that was causing it?? Does system-config-display change somethign else?

I have the following scenario that doesn't seem to work normally. I have a windows 7 pc from which I am using putty to connect to my other linux servers (all running redhat 5 and 6). So here is the scenario that works and one that does not work. And I'm trying to figure out the one that does not work. Scenario that works:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1.
echo $DISPLAY
localhost:10.0
I run xclock and I see it pop up on my windows 7 pc. I am using xming on windows 7 to help me populate the display from linux to windows. One that does not work:
From windows 7 (putty) I ssh into Linux_Server_1. Then from Linux_Server_1 I ssh into Linux_Server_2.
echo $DISPLAY
<no output>
I try to setup $DISPLAY with localhost:10.0 or 0.0 or even my windows 7 pc ip address:0.0 ....etc Then when I try to run xclock I doesn't work.
I get these error messages: Error: Can't open display: <ip of display>
Also as a side note all our Linux servers are sitting on one subnet. My pc is sitting on another subnet. I use vpn to connect to the subnet where the servers sit from my pc.

I have configured an instance in AWS EC2. I am trying to set the display back so I can run x apps. I login using ssh -xy -i...
export DISPLAY=XXX.XXX.X.XXX:0.0
echo $DISPLAY to verify
xhost +
xhost: unable to open display "XXX.XXX.X.XXX:0.0"
I have commented out nolisten tcp as suggested HERE I have modified /etc/gdm/custom.conf as suggested HERE Actually, the last suggested modifying /etc/gdm/gdm.conf, but that file didn't exist, so I added the line: DisallowTCP=false to /etc/gdm/custom.conf I rebooted, and still I get: xhost: unable to open display "XXX.XXX.X.XXX:0.0"

I'm testing HTML5 for the first time, using Firefox (beta) 4.0b8 and SeaMonkey (beta) 2.1b1, and its ignoring some CSS. Specifically, I have problems with the <details> tag. (It is nested in a paragraph...I am using it to provide an in-paragraph definition in hopes it can be toggled.)
Firefox only partly supports <details>. It's not supposed to show anything except the content of <summary>, unless you click on <summary>'s content. Instead, it puts a line break before the content of <details>, splitting the paragraph in two peices (which looks silly), without the "closed/open" functionality.
So I tried using "display:inline" in my CSS, but that gets ignored. Just for fun, I also tried "display:hidden" (also ignored) and "display:none" (obeyed).
SeaMonkey doesn't doesn't do anything special with the content of <display>...but it also ignores the same CSS as Firefox.
The only thing I can do to support semantic design is apply "font-style:italic" to all <details> elements.
Granted, you might ask, "why bother using <details> at all. then?" Well, I would like to have <details> for the browsers that support it, with the "font-style:italic" to degrade the page nicely for those that don't (such as for SeaMonkey).
Does anyone know why "display:inline" and "display:hidden" get ignored?

I just upgraded to the 10.04 and everything works just fine as before (except for skype but that really doesn't matters as it has already been 3 years I'm using ubuntu and I managed to get it to work only once, for miracle I believe ^^). The only real issue I have is this: when I start up my laptop, after the log-in, no sound will be heared as the "speaker" volume level in alsamixer is set to 0; if I raise it from the terminal running alsamixer (as I don't know any other alternative) everything plays just fine, but the next time I boot I do have to do it all over again... So, how can I change the default startup level of the "speaker" in alsamixer?
PS: by the way I do have the very same issue with the screen luminosity but the other way round as is always starts at maximum brightness and I can't manage to get it to start at the minimum, as it did before. At least reducing the backlight if far more quick but a couple of times I forget it and the battery lasted something like half an hour

When I turn on the computer, the Grub2 shows up and asks me to choose what OS to start. And from today on, whatever I choose, I end up with nothing. When Linux (Ubuntu) is chosen, then the blinking logo is shown (depicting it's loading) and after some time I can only see a black screen. In case when Windows is chosen, the black screen appears immediately. Kive cd works fine but don't know what I could do with it. A week ago I changed a booting order in my BIOS, so that GRUB2 is loading very fast now. Then I also chose: sudo dkpg-reconfigure grub-pc and selected the disk that had my boot partition. For a week or so it worked fine.

I have installed ubuntu the same day on 2 PCs, my laptop with an athlon 64 x2 and 4Gb of RAM DDR3 and my very old PC, athlon XP2400 with 1Gb of DDR2 memory (if i remember well)
It starts in 20 seconde on the old PC and around 1 minute on my laptop, honestly it bugs me, any ideas why it is so slow on my laptop? I do have a 2 seconds for grubs, but still...

I've added mpd to System->Preferences->Startup Applications several times and it always just disappears and of course isn't started. I have used both mpd and /usr/bin/mpd as the command. I have done a log search as follows:
Code:
sudo find /var/log -type f -mtime -5 -exec grep -i -e 'mpd' '{}' +
and nothing significant was found, e.g. an error message indicating that the mpd startup command was removed.
