Ubuntu :: Lucid (10.04) Wont Shutdown Computer?

May 2, 2010

My ubuntu won't shut down, it stops at the ubuntu logo (with the dots under it). It seems like the OS completely and successfully shuts down, also the harddrive spins down too, except for the computer. I belive this might have happened after I updated my bios. (due to hybrid gpu trouble)I did search on the internet, and found that it might be some ACPI related issues, and that I have to edit the grub's menu.lst file and add acpi=force. However my menu.lst file is blank, there is nothing in there.

I have tried to shutdown via the terminal too, but the same happens there. Last time I checked it successfully reboots, and standby works correctly. For me to shutdown this laptop, I have to remove the battery and the power cord for it to shutdown, or hold the power button for 10 secs, which is really annoing

Ubuntu :: Computer Died On Lucid Upgrade ?

May 4, 2010

I was put somewhat in charge of a server last semester running Ubuntu. It serves as a router and general purpose computer for a robotics lab. Yesterday, I went do dist-upgrade using the command line, and ran into a couple of bugs with gtk libraries which I fixed based on the bug reports. However, the computer decided to reboot for some reason in the middle of the upgrade and killed the running OS. I currently have it up on a Debian recovery CD. I can't get past intramfs without the CD. It is dying somewhere in rsyslog with an error about a broken pipe. I am not sure where to go from here. I will post actual error messages when I get back infront of the machine. No one knows how the machine was set up in the first place and it holds a few secrets we need to keep, so reinstall is the last option.

Ubuntu :: Install Windows Xp Instead Of Lucid As The Primary Os On Computer?

Sep 28, 2010

I have ubuntu lucid as the primary os on our main computer here at home. Due to some compatibility issues (wife), I need to install Windows xp instead of lucid as the primary os on this computer. I do plan to put ubuntu back on it as dual boot, beings that I don't particularly care for windows for what I use this computer for.I'm usually fairly competent when it comes to installing operating systems and whatnot, but for some reason this computer will not boot from my xp boot cd, irregardless of whether or not I select boot from cd.. It just boots straight to ubuntu.

Ubuntu :: Very Slow Boot Time On AMD 30m / USB Hardware Doesn't Work After Computer Boot?

Mar 21, 2011

I've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers. The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

Ubuntu :: Dual Boot XP - 10.10 - Boot Screen Shows Up But Then Computer Restarts And Returns To The GRUB Menu

Dec 16, 2010

I followed a tutorial to install XP across my entire HDD. I installed Ubuntu 10.10 "Alongside another OS". Ubuntu loads fine, but when trying to load XP, the boot screen shows up, but then the computer restarts and returns to the GRUB menu.

I saw some threads on this site and tried to type: sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

In the terminal. It returned a blank text document so I'm not sure if that information was outdated. I then typed: sudo fdisk -l

And got this:

Not sure what any of this means, but I sure hope someone else does. I would say forget XP, but it's hard to let go of some of the games and software I use. I appreciate any responses, thank you.

I tried to format the table as it appeared, but the forum corrected the extra spaces.

Ubuntu :: Install - BOOT Into Windows On A Dual Boot Computer - Damn Wireless Router To Recognize?

Jan 6, 2011

it started with rooting my Motorola Droid. I got quite interested in the whole rooting/linux "world". The only problem is, my hands move A LOT faster than my brain does. I'm an "educated novice" at best when it comes to all of this and still learning slowly, but surely. I followed an online tutorial and before I realized quite what i'd done, I had dual installed Ubuntu linux 10.10 on my laptop. ISO'd this, partitioned that and realized....i'm in way over my head. Then I started researching how to just go back in time and get my "safe" windows vista back until I'm ready to make the switch to linux and just ended up getting more confused.

How do I actually BOOT into Windows on a dual boot computer that I apparently just created? How, if need be, do I undo everything I just did in the past few hours and careless tinkering? If I decide to stay with Linux, how do I get my damn wireless router to recognize?

Ubuntu :: Computer Will Not Boot From The HDD And Will Only Boot From The USB Drive That The LiveCD Is On?

Feb 26, 2011

i have downgraded from Ubuntu 10.10 to Ubuntu 10.04. I've had some bumps along the way and finally was able to install 10.04 successfully. Right now, my computer will not boot from the HDD and will only boot from the USB drive that the LiveCD is on. When I reorganize to set HDD as primary boot, i get:id-laptop login:d-laptop password:and I can put that in but then it just gives me a command line that ends with ~$ i believe. How do I get it to boot from the HDD instead of from the USB without running into this problem?

If I resequence the boot to HDD as number two, it will juts go into the LiveCD mode. Am I supposed to reinstall 10.04 again? I know 10.04 was successfully installed because it said it was and it needed to restart so i hit the restart button. It also had my old desktop picture there and all my files AND i checked the system info before restarting (it confirmed that lucid lynx was running).

Ubuntu :: Can No Longer Boot To XP On Dual Boot Computer

Mar 1, 2011

I have (had) a dual boot computer;Win XP and Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit.I decided it was necessary to enlarge my Root and Home Partitions. Using the instructions http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.p...ome+Partitions I successfully enlarged the partitions and restored 10.10 (I used the copy command suggested by Irony). However when I boot the computer it boots to Ubuntu but no longer gives me the option of going into XP(it is not listed in Grub menu). Is there a fairly straightforward way of getting XP back on the Grub menu so I can boot to XP again?

Ubuntu :: Odd Behavior In Lucid After Boot?

Jun 3, 2010

I upgraded to Lucid from Karmic a few weeks ago. The upgrade went fine. Then I decided to move my exit, maximize, and minimize buttons to the right side. I used Ubuntu Tweak to do this. Since that time I have very odd behavior after I boot Lucid. The booted system comes up with an X for a cursor. There are no exit, maximize, and minimize buttons on my window bar. Finally, I can open a terminal, but cannot type anything in it.Sometimes I can get things back to normal by using Ubuntu Tweak to move the buttons to the left or right (depending on where they were before the boot). Sometimes I have to open System>Preferences>Appearance> and change Visual Effects from None to Normal or vice versa.I have tried metacity --replace (after getting the terminal window to allow me to type in data), but after I reboot, things are back the way they were. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE on board graphics card, and I am using the Nvidia current version driver. When things are working correctly, System Monitor shows a compiz process running but not a metacity process. Is this correct?

Ubuntu :: Lucid / LiveCD Will Not Boot

Jun 28, 2010

Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 64bit, HP ZV6000

I've boon doing a lot of reading on booting problems in 10.04 and it seems as though there are a lot of booting issues after the upgrade or, in my case, out of the blue. I've only been using Ubuntu for about 6 months now, dual-booting my WinXP box, and for the most part haven't had any issues. I upgraded to 10.04 via the update manager (or whatever it was that said: there's a new version of Ubuntu out there, please update) sometime in May and never had a problem (although I did choose a wrong setting for the dual boot but that just meant I couldn't get into WinXP).

Out of the blue one day, after being on the laptop for a few hours I decided to shut down and go outside. I did the same normal shutdown I always do and shut the computer down. I came back to it a couple of hours later and it wouldn't boot. The HP splash screen pops up (as normal) giving me the opportunity to go into the BIOS if needed and then the GRUB 1.98 loader shows the available versions: Ubuntu kernel, ubuntu kernel and Win partition. If I choose either of the two Ubuntu kernel's my screen goes blank and I get a flashing curser in the top left corner. And that's it. I've let it sit for an hour and nothing.

I tried to boot from my LiveCD (9.10) but the computer will not boot from the LiveCD. I took out the HDD and slid it into a USB connector and plugged it into another computer and only the WinXP partition shows. I can't even look into the non-OS partition I created specifically for circumstances like these. I tried the "GRUB> find /boot/grub/grub.conf" command from the GRUB menu and nothing. It comes back with a "find is not a valid command" notice. I have some music and videos on there I'd really rather not lose. Unfortunately, the laptop is too old to boot from a USB (BIOS isn't being updated anymore) and I can't think of any other options. As far as I know, my only other option is to format the drive and start over.

Ubuntu :: Lucid Boot Hangs For A While / Solve This?

May 2, 2010

I installed lucid the other day on my laptop, the first time it booted after installing it gave two error messages (unfortunately I can't remember what they said). The errors stopped appearing after that but once I select Ubuntu from the boot menu, it just hangs on a black screen for a good 15 seconds at the least before it runs the plymouth screen for like 2 seconds (the progress bar is already full) and then goes into the login screen. Here is my boot chart:

http://akgenome.com/files/bootchart.png

I was wondering if anyone can tell from that what is causing the issue and perhaps how to fix it? The boot log is like 3 lines long and is completely normal.

I recently upgraded my Ubuntu from 9.04 (Jaunty) to 10.04 (Lucid) and now I cannot boot into Ubuntu - I just get a desktop with no icons or disk activity. Ubuntu :: Disk Check On Every Boot On Lucid?

May 26, 2010

I have updated from Karmic to Lucid not long ago, and everything went smooth and my system is been working like a charm for about a month. And it still does, with the only issue being that every time I restart my system, one of my partitions is checked.

My disk is split into 4 partitions:
sda1, NTFS for windows
sda2, ext4 for "/"
sda3, ext2 for /home
sda4, swap

Now what seems to happen is that sda3 is being marked as "not clean" on every shutdown, which makes me assume that is not being umounted at all.

I've been reading logs, commenting network drives out on fstab.. nothing does the trick.

I've booted into single mode and run e2fsck (which doesn't find anything wrong, and marks the FS as "clean") and then rebooted. The result is: if the FS wasn't mounted when I restart, then I get a clean boot once, but it is checked on the following one; if it was mounted then it is again checked at start-up.

Again, all points to the problem being that the FS is not cleanly umounted on shut-down.

I could not find any log with info of the processes killed and FS umounted at shut-down, so if anybody knows where to look, it could be a good start.
