Ubuntu :: Boot Time In Lucid?
May 2, 2010lucid takes much less time to boot, but my boot time is considerably higher( almost 50 sec) is there any settings that can be changed to improve that?

Ubuntu :: Register A Daemon To Start Up At Boot Time In Lucid?
Aug 23, 2010What's the best way to register a daemon to start up at boot time in lucid? I have tried registering the following script using "sudo update-rc.d"

This is supposed to get the daemon for opentftp started, but it does nothing, although I can see the results of the "echo 'Server opentftpd started' " in the boot log in /var/log .Any thoughts or general help on what the best way to accomplish such a task is?

Feb 23, 2011I just did a distribution upgrade on my laptop from 9.1 to 10.04, and it went fine for the most part except this issue. After it boots up, I don't see any window titles/scrollbars/borders and on clicking the icon for "Show desktop" on the bottom left, I see the following error message:
"Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager."
After googling a bit, I realized that gnome-wm is not starting automatically and so I have to manually start each time to see the windows working properly. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to make sure that gnome-wm starts automatically? I know I can put it in my .bashrc but I want to do it the correct way if possible. If not, I will have to go with that workaround.

May 3, 2010I started out with Kubuntu RC, then installed ubuntu-desktop and updated all the way to the current state of packages.Anyway, from the moment I installed the RC, from time to time the boot splash appears, the dots light up/turn off and then the booting hags. No key seems to work.I the do a hard reset and everything works just fine.As not to open another thread:- how can I see the Ubuntu splash screen? (currently I can see the Kubuntu one)- how can I turn the splash off and have it boot in text mode?

Jun 27, 2010I didn't quite know how to describe my problem in the title. I installed Lucid i386 on my wife's PC two days ago. I updated all programs from the update manager. This PC uses a usb Wifi adapter for internet. When I boot the PC, the internet works. But after one or two hours, the networking capabilities disappear. In the network list in the panel there are NO networks listed, and the only way that I have been able to restore the ethernet is to restart the PC. What can I do to correct this?

Jul 24, 2010I would like to run a few custom commands when booting: "xinput" to calibrate the touchscreen and a couple of "setkeycodes" to make special buttons responsive.
From within a session I need to do "sudo setkeycodes [etc]" - without root access there's a "couldn't get a file descriptor referring to the console" error message.
Ideally these commands would already be operational at the login screen, and without requiring entering a root password every time.
I've put the commands in an otherwise empty /etc/rc.local but this does nothing. Other posts mention bootscript.sh but I don't get how this is used; and the best way to do this seems to have changed between versions - so what's the proper Lucid way?
Ubuntu :: Running Real Time Kernel With Lucid?
Sep 25, 2010I have the latest release of Lucid Lynx installed. I want to try out audio recording on Linux so I want to know if it's possible to use a real time kernel with Lucid. So I installed the 2.6.31 real time kernel. It shows up in GRUB, but when I boot it gives me the message:
mounting none on /dev failed No such device
It then takes me to the login screen, and once I enter my password it just takes me back to the login.

Jun 14, 2010I am building a PC that dual boots Kubuntu and Windows and want to share the email store. Therefore, I would like to have real time or on access scanning of emails in an antivirus program like Windows does. I am not running an email server, just a desktop using pop3 and eventually imap email.
In previous Debian versions ClamAV and Dazuko used to do this. However, I understand that this setup doesn't work in Lucid. I tried p3scan but that hasn't been updated since 2008, once I managed to install it, it failed to find clamd even though it was running. I understand that clamdrib no longer works for Thunderbird 3. Amavisd as a replacement for p3scan, but this seems to be for mail servers.
I would be really grateful if anyone could tell me how to get on access/real time virus scanning of pop3 and imap emails on a desktop running Lucid with either Thunderbird 3 or Kmail, without having to buy an antivirus program like Avast Or point me to an existing tutorial that I might have missed.
As an aside (don't want much do I?) does anyone know if Kmail can be setup to only download the headers like Thunderbird does?

If I restart my LucidLynx box then I can't see anything in finder. I can't log into my LucidLynx box from finder. I don't get a bad username or password error it just tells me the connection failed. *Note if I do enter an incorrect username or password it WILL tell me it's incorrect. Mar 21, 2011I've been a long time Windows user, but I've started a small firm and because of lack of funds, I've decided to install Ubuntu on my company's PCs.I have 8 PCs in total - 6 of them with Intel CPUs, and the last two with AMD CPUs. I bought the extra two computers because I've managed to find an extra two people to work at my company, and AMD-based PCs are cheaper so I've decided to buy them instead of Intel.Long-story short, I've installed Ubuntu 9.10 and boot time takes about half-an-hour. After the computers finally boot, USB hardware doesn't work at all. I was forced to buy PS/2 keyboards & mice and they both work fine after the PCs boot.I don't know what's causing this delay.I've enabled Cool 'n Quiet from BIOS.I've tried several instructions like editing the /etc/modules file.I've installed cpufreqd, tried to configure it, but it didn't work.I've check the CPU stats and my CPUs are running at 800MHz. I can't believe nobody managed to fix the 800MHz problem as I've noticed it's quite common among AMD Ubuntu users. I think I've tried almost anything that I've found on this forum.I can't keep asking my employees not to reboot their PCs. Both Chrome/Firefox crash a lot on Ubuntu so they're forced to restart their computers.The computer specs are: AMD Athlon II X2 240 dual-core @ 2.800MHz, 2GB RAM, 500GB HDD, etc.

Oct 14, 2010I've got two laptops running Ubuntu. Both have had Lucid installed from the live cd. I have upgraded one of them to Maverick. Both distributions are running great after they boot up, but I haven't experienced any faster boot times with either distibution. Both boot to Bios and then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in upper left corner of the screen. The black screen remains for 30 to 45 seconds and then I get the Ubuntu splash screen for maybe 5 seconds, and then desktop. Why am I not seeing faster boot times? I realize 45 to 60 seconds is good compared to other os's, but I anticipated much faster boot times. Shut down on the other hand is quite fast at maybe 5 to 10 seconds. Does anyone else get this black screen on boot? Seems like wasted time cause I can't tell what's going on during the time there is a black screen. This is not a real big deal breaker, as I don't reboot very often, but I just wonder why bootup isn't faster.

Jul 26, 2010I've been having a problem on my AMD based machine, 4cpu, gigabyte ga-ma78gm-s2h Mobo, 8GB mem, two 2 terabyte Sata HDs.One thing I've found is that any kernel after 2.6.32-17 has a randomness at boot time whether the system will completely boot or not.
For instance just today I downloaded and installed 2.6.32-24
It fails to boot (I've tried cold boot, warm boot).Running its repair also fails to completely boot.My experience is that if I keep trying it "may" eventually boot but I believe there was some change after 2.6.32-17-generic that's causing the problem.Because as with 2.6.32.23... which also fails to complete bootup many times... eventually my guess is that 2.6.32.24 will also boot "sometimes".But why does 2.6.32.17 always boot for me? Something changed and its not my setup.

Jul 18, 2011I have installed "open-SUSE 11.4" on a "500GB Free Agent External Hard Drive". I didn't have any problem in booting since last week that I booted it from my laptop. Also I did it before several times from then when I try to boot it e.g. from an "Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9400 @ 2.66GHz" PC the time between loading INITRD and starting boot sequence messages lasts nearly 30 minutes!(i didn't actually measure it but it take a long time in the same order). after starting boot sequence which is showed on monitor everything looks normal. e.g copy of files would be done by speeds between 2MB/s to 30 MB/s depending on the targets.I used to use the external hard derive to boot from different laptops and PC's from start but I didn't have such a problem anytime.

Jun 3, 2010I upgraded to Lucid from Karmic a few weeks ago. The upgrade went fine. Then I decided to move my exit, maximize, and minimize buttons to the right side. I used Ubuntu Tweak to do this. Since that time I have very odd behavior after I boot Lucid.The booted system comes up with an X for a cursor. There are no exit, maximize, and minimize buttons on my window bar. Finally, I can open a terminal, but cannot type anything in it.Sometimes I can get things back to normal by using Ubuntu Tweak to move the buttons to the left or right (depending on where they were before the boot). Sometimes I have to open System>Preferences>Appearance> and change Visual Effects from None to Normal or vice versa.I have tried metacity --replace (after getting the terminal window to allow me to type in data), but after I reboot, things are back the way they were. I have an Nvidia GeForce 7300 LE on board graphics card, and I am using the Nvidia current version driver. When things are working correctly, System Monitor shows a compiz process running but not a metacity process. Is this correct?

As soon as i try to boot from USB image made with Unetbootin or the Live CD i get the splash screen with the Ubuntu logo and the white and red dots under the logo and then My monitor says going to sleep and thats it .
I also have a ATI HD 5770 but it works in 10.4 as of last week
I cant get past that a real bummer i cant run Ubuntu anymore

I've boon doing a lot of reading on booting problems in 10.04 and it seems as though there are a lot of booting issues after the upgrade or, in my case, out of the blue. I've only been using Ubuntu for about 6 months now, dual-booting my WinXP box, and for the most part haven't had any issues. I upgraded to 10.04 via the update manager (or whatever it was that said: there's a new version of Ubuntu out there, please update) sometime in May and never had a problem (although I did choose a wrong setting for the dual boot but that just meant I couldn't get into WinXP).
Out of the blue one day, after being on the laptop for a few hours I decided to shut down and go outside. I did the same normal shutdown I always do and shut the computer down. I came back to it a couple of hours later and it wouldn't boot. The HP splash screen pops up (as normal) giving me the opportunity to go into the BIOS if needed and then the GRUB 1.98 loader shows the available versions: Ubuntu kernel, ubuntu kernel and Win partition. If I choose either of the two Ubuntu kernel's my screen goes blank and I get a flashing curser in the top left corner. And that's it. I've let it sit for an hour and nothing.
I tried to boot from my LiveCD (9.10) but the computer will not boot from the LiveCD. I took out the HDD and slid it into a USB connector and plugged it into another computer and only the WinXP partition shows. I can't even look into the non-OS partition I created specifically for circumstances like these. I tried the "GRUB> find /boot/grub/grub.conf" command from the GRUB menu and nothing. It comes back with a "find is not a valid command" notice. I have some music and videos on there I'd really rather not lose. Unfortunately, the laptop is too old to boot from a USB (BIOS isn't being updated anymore) and I can't think of any other options. As far as I know, my only other option is to format the drive and start over.
Ubuntu Installation :: XP Will Not Boot After Lucid?
Jul 21, 2010After installing lucid, if I select xp at startup all that appears is a flashing cursor. I have read other threads that report the same symptoms but I'n not familiar enough with grub to tell if I have the same problem. Below is output from boot info script.
