May 21, 2010I recently installed ubuntu 10.04 lts. Whenever i boot ,it hangs the moment i log in. I had the same problem with 9.10 as well.

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Lucid Lynx Hangs On Login?
May 20, 2010When I try logging in using any user name, ubuntu just returns to the login screen. I cannot actually log in. I used the recovery mode to create a new login with password 123456, and the same thing happens. What could it be? Ubuntu worked just fine for a while, then DKMS started causing problems, I had errors with upgrades, software installs/uninstalls, then my sound went. I found a great fix for the sound (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting), the sound came back, but then I could not log back in again. I cannot find any help for this issue, and had to install 9.10 Karmic Koala, and that's what I have been using for the past couple of days.10.04 has been fairly buggy for me and I am considering staying with 9.10, or going to another Linux distro.

May 1, 2010I am planning on playing with the lynx on VirtualBox for a while just to do some test and maybe update my installation notes before moving everything but just can't get it to work.
Environment details:
OS: 9.10
Kernel: 2.6.31-21-generic
Machine: Compaq Presario B1200, 3 GB RAM, 14 GB available disk space
VirtualBox: VirtualBox OSE 3.0.8_OSE r53138
Problem: After starting up the virtual machine and reaching the purple screen (where a keyboard and accessibility icons are displayed at the bottom part), everything just goes black with an un-blinking cursor on the top-right. I already tried recreating the virtual machine, removing and creating a number of times, and I've also tried reinstalling VirtualBox but the problem still persists.

May 18, 2010I am trying to install Lucid on my Laptop but can't get the live cd to boot correctly. At the moment, it's giving me a purple screen with a white logo at the bottom, then a black screen with the underscore character blinking, and then nothing. (I have an HP tm2, with a USB DVD/CD drive. 64bit intel core 2 duo. I am using the Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop AMD64 .iso. I also tried the i386 .iso)

May 6, 2010I just downloaded the Lucid Lynx 10.04 LTS Install CD for the desktop. I am concerned that I have downloaded the wrong ISO or that the CD that I burned is not behaving properly. Unlike all of the other Ubuntu "Live CDs", this one doesn't offer you a choice of what Ubuntu does at Boot-up. There's no menu that asks what you'd like to do. This CD doesn't give you choices like:
- Test Drive Ubuntu without making any changes to your computer
- Install Ubuntu
- Test CD for Errors
- Test Memory
- Boot from Hard Disk
Instead, this CD just boots right to a Gnome desktop. Normally this wouldn't be a problem, but it turns out the the CD is performing some actions behind my back that I don't like. All that I wanted to do was to check the CD for errors to make sure that it burned properly. I didn't want it installing on the system where I was doing the burning. Instead of giving me options at boot, the CD automatically loaded Gnome, and then proceeded to mount all of the drives on my system, and then attempted to establish connection to IP address 91.189.90.132. I didn't like that. Luckily my firewall is secure enough that it stopped this unauthorized outbound data traffic dead in its tracks. I used reverse DNS to look up the owner if IP address 91.189.90.132. Here's what I found:

Is this a Live CD, where you have some options about what to do at boot-up, or is this only an install CD? This information isn't clearly spelled out on the download page. this LiveCD taking control of my computer, mounting my drives, and then establishing contact with Canonical Ltd., without even giving me a menu option before doing so.

May 22, 2010I installed bootchart and uploaded an image of my latest boot on imageshack: [URL] but I do not know really how to interpret it. Bare in mind that I did not use to have this problem while running Karmic...back then the OS started twice as faster as it does now after the update (now it takes at least 75 seconds to boot) .

Sep 17, 2010Problem occurred after attempting to update firefox and configure evolution. Attempted to update firefox last night, it froze, attempted to open the system monitor to end the unresponsive process, and got a message saying the system was unable to support a new process because it couldn't fork. Did a forced reset, and the following now happens upon starting up. After selecting ubuntu (as it's a dual boot system with Windows XP) at the grub loader, blank screen, to this:

Ubuntu :: Lucid Lynx Won't Boot. No Recovery Option On Grub2?
Jul 6, 2010After a lot of updates yesterday I have found that Lucid will no longer boot, I just get a blank screen that has a cursor flashing in the top left corner. I can't boot into recovery mode to see what the issue(s) might be because I took that option out when I ran update-grub.My question is this, is there a way to run update-grub -either from a live-cd or grub-rescue mode- that would put the recovery boot option back in? I have already edited the /etc/default/grub file to comment out the field.

Jul 21, 2010after upgrading to lucid lynx ubuntu doesn't boot with the new kernels 2.6.32-22-generic and 2.6.32-23-generic (also in recovery mode). But it's does boot with the previous 2.6.31-21-generic kernel. At the time i was hoping to wait it out, but a new kernel has come and the problem persisted. I've been trying to find a solution for this but somehow, amid lots of failed boot blank black screen threads, i didn't relate to any solution. The boot seems to go well until a pixelated logo appears (before the login screen), then goes to a blank black screen and there it stays stuck with no remedy. Looking into dmesg logs - albeit some differences between 2.6.31-21 and the newer 2.6.32-23 - the failed boot seems proper in both logs. In Xorg logs the differences are bigger but i cannot pinpoint a source for this problem.

Apr 27, 2010I've got a machine that I'd got 9.10 on, that I've now upgraded to Lucid Lynx - and I'm having the same problem with dual boot (or lack thereof) that I was having previously.
Rough scenario is:
(Original Vista machine had)
C: Windows Vista OS + Windows software, etc.: 500GB - single NTFS partition - SATA drive
D: General dumping ground for data. 500GB SATA drive. Was single NTFS partition, now shrunk to install Ubuntu.
So is now:
- NTFS partition (containing general rubbish)
- Ubuntu / partition
- Ubuntu swap partition
... and then 3 x 1TB SATA drives making up an (Intel ICH9R) FakeRaid RAID5 array - that Windows can happily 'see' and use, but I don't care about Ubuntu having access to it or even seeing it.
Lucid Lynx is installed to /dev/sde6 (IIRC) - but when I boot the machine just boots straight into Vista.
I've done what I can to try and get GRUB correctly installed - to the point that right now I probably have it splattered just about anywhere and everywhere.
So - now - the machine boots and simply presents me with "GRUB Hard Disk Error" and stops...
I can fix this by running the Vista repair, with a fixmbr etc. and putting the MBR back to 'normal' on the first boot disk (/dev/sdd in this case). The machine then just boots straight into Vista.
...or I can boot into Ubuntu (or Vista) by booting off a Super Grub Disk (CD) and selecting "Boot Linux" (or whatever it is) - and it correctly boots Lucid Lynx from /dev/sde6
Ideally I want a proper GRUB dual boot menu - but I just seem to be getting into more and more of a mess!

Aug 28, 2010how to change (rename, delete) lines from boot list in grub 2, Ubuntu 10.04? For example, when I boot my pc, I have a boot list with options "Ubuntu 10.04", "memtest" and "Windows 7". I want to delete "memtest" line, as I don't need it, and rename "Windows 7" line to, for example, "Windows 117". How can I do that? Where I should look and edit? In old grub it was enough to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, but in Ubuntu 10.04 there is no such file and other grub2-related files (like grub.cfg) do not contain this info to rename or delete lines. So, I can't figure out what to do.

May 14, 2010I just did a distribution upgrade on my laptop from 9.1 to 10.04, and it went fine for the most part except this issue. After it boots up, I don't see any window titles/scrollbars/borders and on clicking the icon for "Show desktop" on the bottom left I see the following error message: "Your window manager does not support the show desktop button, or you are not running a window manager."
After googling a bit, I realized that gnome-wm is not starting automatically and so I have to manually start each time to see the windows working properly. Can somebody tell me if there is a way to make sure that gnome-wm starts automatically? I know I can put it in my .bashrc but I want to do it the correct way if possible. If not, I will have to go with that workaround

May 2, 2010I installed lucid the other day on my laptop, the first time it booted after installing it gave two error messages (unfortunately I can't remember what they said). The errors stopped appearing after that but once I select Ubuntu from the boot menu, it just hangs on a black screen for a good 15 seconds at the least before it runs the plymouth screen for like 2 seconds (the progress bar is already full) and then goes into the login screen. I was wondering if anyone can tell from that what is causing the issue and perhaps how to fix it? The boot log is like 3 lines long and is completely normal.
Ubuntu :: Lucid Boot Hangs When Using Thinkpad With Monitor / Sort It?
Aug 15, 2010I use an IBM Thinkpad T30 with an ATI Radeon Mobility 7500 graphics card as my work machine, mostly at a desk, using a docking station to link it into a monitor. I upgraded to Lucid last weekend. When using the integral screen on the laptop the graphics have been fine, but when using a monitor I initially got some very poor contrast, brightness and gamma output, described in this bug.

According to the advice in that bug report, I upgraded the kernel, with Kernelcheck automatically updating me to 2.6.35-candela. Now, rather than poor graphics with the monitor it just hangs on the splash screen, displaying the words Ubuntu with the dots underneath.
Reading around, when similar problems have been seen in previous versions of Ubuntu it has been a graphics issue, which fits. One piece of advice I've seen quite commonly is to remove the "quiet splash" from grub, which I've tried but doesn't work. I am tempted to try and work through the different grub commands these guys used to tackle a similar problem with the live CD:

As an aside, the 2.6.35-candela kernel brings up a bunch of errors on boot, described at the link below, but reading that thread they don't look like they would cause my problem:

Jul 15, 2010Ubuntu 10.04 is unable to set up my Canon Pixma IP 6000D printer.So earlier tonight when my wife wanted 2 recipes she saw on this am's Today Show, I had to restart my computer with a Fedora 13 live CD in the drive. F13 quickly installs my Canon printer and I am able to print the recipes.But this sure is a convoluted way of printing 2 short text files.to get my printer to work with Ubuntu.I've been using Ubuntu almost 2 years now, and love it, love it, love it, except for this one little thing.

May 11, 2010I have been running 32 bit karmic (and before that jaunty, intrepid and hardy) with no problems on my Dell D620 laptop. Since I upgraded to lucid, I get occasional freezes. It often happens at the gnome login screen after I click on my name but before I can enter the password, or upon restore from suspend but sometimes at other times. It doesn't happen all the time but often enough to be really annoying. When the freeze occurs, the mouse pointer responds to the touchpad or an external usb mouse, but no mouse button events are recognized and the keyboard has no effect either. I can't switch virtual terminals or anything. If the system was up and had a DHCP address at the time of the freeze, I believe the network still responds to ping. The only thing I can do to get the system back is hold the power button for 30 seconds until it powers off. The desktop CPU temperature monitor does not indicate excessive heating at the time of the freeze. I don't know whether I should try a re-install of lucid, or just go back to karmic.

He also says (and I can confirm) that the gray lines are the new borders of the tablet. A little annoying, but I imagine one could configure that, too.

Ubuntu Installation :: Bluetooth Under Lucid Lynx?
Apr 30, 2010I have tried out Lucid Lynx Beta 1 back in march. During the installation I was announced that support for bluetooth was dropped. I installed anyway, thinking it would be back in the Final Release. Meanwhile (between March and April) I reinstalled Karmic because I really needed the bluetooth. I can see in the upgrade that bluetooth still isn't available. What should I do about this? Is there a way to keep Lucid Lynx and bluetooth? Or will I have to stay on Karmic until the end of times?

Tried different ports, still nothing. I haven't tested on previous versions of Ubuntu or other Linux distros. A PS/2 keyboard works great on Ubuntu except the one I have is broken, hence why I'm using this USB keyboard. Any ideas on how to fix this? Jun 1, 2010I have just updated ubuntu from koala to lynx via reloading the synaptic repositories, and after having restarting, to boot into lynx, found that my laptop's keyboard doesnt work, none of the keys are reponding at all, which is odd as I have never had this problem with my laptop before.. I thought this might have been a (semi) common problem with lynx, but after a few searches, have not found anything similar to this problem..Does anybody have any idea what might be the problem here, I can still use the laptop to do things via the mouse and even access the internet and grab text and paste it for things, but obviously would like my keyboard back (i didnt write this on my laptop!) I am 99.9% sure it is not a hardware problem

Jun 13, 2010I don't know how many has had this problem, but I understand I am not the only onehe problem is that after using synclient to disable the touchpad in 10.04 it would enable itself, seemingly, at random.Well, what I found was that unchecking the "Disable touchpad while typing" feature in "System->Preferences->Mouse->Touchpad" will fix the problem.Apparently the system does not recognize that the user has deliberately disabled the touchpad. And so it will reenable it when the user is "done typing".

Sep 19, 2010I've recently built a half-new computer and installed Lucid Lynx on it.I managed to get everything else working and even got the ATI drivers installed. However, I can't get above 60 Hz on my old CRT monitor - the ATI driver controls have 60 as the highest selectable refresh rate. The preferred 1152x864 screenmode works fine otherwise.
Here are the known specifications:
Monitor horizontal refresh: 30-86 kHz
Monitor vertical refresh: 50-150 Hz
Known working display mode on earlier graphics card: 1152x864, 85 Hz.
My motherboard (with integrated graphics) is the Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3 AMD 880G AM3. The GPU is Radeon HD 4250.The ATI drivers seem to have "taken over" the xorg.conf, so I don't know where to input any values.
