I am relatively new to Ubuntu. Currently running Lucid Lynx, but I cannot connect to the internet. I can ping 127.0.0.1, and google.com. Software update works as well, but the connection times out when I try connecting to a web site e.g. bbc.uk.
View 4 RepliesI did a clean install of the latest version of Ubuntu. For some reason, there are still internet-issues. When I tried out the following command

Also, during install of the new ubuntu, it was unable to reach the repos for downloading. Odd thing is that I can go online, and that when I type 'ftp.microsoft.com' in my browser, it displays the file-hierarchy.
when I try to connect via PuTTY from a windows machine I get " PuTTY Fatal error connection timed out. I try to do so via a router redirecting IPadr:86 to local adr:22 on the Linux machine.
I seems not to be a routing issue since the router is setup to redirect apparently correctly.
Well I have stopped iptables and selinux is disabled. The sshd deamon is running. I can logon with ssh locally "ssh webcamATlocal adr".
I get the below errors when trying to connect to the below repos.It has almost always worked in the past. Is the site "packages.medibuntu.org" down again !?

Turned on Port Forwarding (22)
Added Rule to UFW allow 22/TCP
I have been getting these errors while running update manager and I can't seem to find specific information or how to resolve these problems. Was hoping someone could please provide me with some details about why they are occurring so I can deal with them myself next time and how I can go about fixing them now.

I've been trying to ssh out of my home network to school computers and I keep getting:
ssh: connect to host sage.math.washington.edu port 22: Connection timed out
I've tried this on my machine (running Ubuntu 10.04) and on a windows 7 machine (using putty). I have been successful ssh'ing to this machine using either of the laptops from every other network I've tried, so I'm pretty sure it's something about my home network.
Five days back, i got a notification on top right side mentioning "The update information is outdated. This may be caused by network problems or by a repository that is no longer available. Please update manually by clicking on this icon and then selecting 'Check for updates' and check if some of the listed repositories fail."
So, i go ahead and click it.. it says it is downloading 1 of 19 files and after some time, i get the error mentioning "W: Failed to fetch [URK] Could not connect to 87.89.43.193:3128 (87.89.43.193), connection timed out"
I went into Software Sources and tried different servers from different countries, but there wasn't any luck. I also unchecked the repository that was giving the problem but nothing was getting downloaded from other repositories as well.

I suppose this is because I am connecting from a public institute where there is a firewall that is blocking an outbound connection on port 22.Is there anyway I can bypass the firewall using the internet ?
I am not so experienced with networking in Linux. I've successfully installed Red Hat Linux Enterprise 5.2 on a VMware host. When I issued nslookup command, it returns "connection timed out" error as follows:

View 9 Replies View RelatedI was having no problems (that I knew of) browsing the web since installing Ubuntu 10.10 a week or so ago. I was previously trialling Win7 as my customers will likely be using that in the future. Then I wanted to go to internode.on.net. As it was just after Christmas I thought it must be down, for upgrades or maintenance etc. I later tried to go to Freebsd.org; same error. I've been having a small number of other websites give the same error. I thought nothing of this until I tried it on my wife's macpro. I could log onto all the websites I wanted to and none gave any indication of having been down. Both boxes are on the same adsl connection. I still can't access internode or freebsd on 10.10 yet have been able to access every website on OSX. Now, I was only looking at them for info but am worried I won't be able to access something important. (so far everything I 'need' is working)

My internet connection is pretty fast, but the initial connection to websites take about 4-10 seconds. Sometimes I even get a "connection timed out" error. Once and if the connection is made, the website loads up pretty quickly. I have no problems with internet speed otherwise as I get pretty good speeds for downloads and torrents.
Chrome shows "sending request" and Firefox shows "looking up" during this period of apparent inactivity.
It is not a DNS problem as I have switched DNS from my default to the OpenDNS servers. Besides, everything works fine on Windows with either DNS setup.
I have also tried switching off ipv6 by adding "alias net-pf-10 off" in modprobe.conf. I even switched off ipv6 in Firefox in about:config to no avail.
Oddly, wget seems to work fast and normally. And nslookup returns results almost instantly.
I am on Arch linux with a Broadcom wireless card.

The /etc/cups/printers.conf file is properly set, the printers appear in localhost:631 and they are printing test pages. However, all command line print commands seem to be trying to print to sdst@other.domain I don't know why printers.conf is being ignored and why and how sdst@other.domain was added. Seems like it might have been auto-discovered?

I am trying to connect B from A using command shh -X devendra@144.16.205.236, and facing error like ssh port 22 connection timed out.
I have SSH running on port 8662 and 22. I use 8662 for the outside world (eth0 which is 192.168 network) Here are the only lines I have changed in sshd_config:

I am using Squeeze and all appears OK at first... I have a DHCP lease, PING to router works, apache servering fine in and outside the network, Epiphany seems to connects to default debian.org only, BUT I cannot connect to any other websites and apt will not connect to any servers. I installed once, tried to fix problem, gave up and reinstalled and still have the same problem.
I unistalled Network Manager thinking that was the problem, but still the same issue. Is there a default firewall blocking certain connections or am I missing something I'm supposed to know about? I installed some non-free firmware in the beginning of install and all worked... and I connected fine when downloading packages during install.

In our development box we are configured postgresql to work with Jboss. The thing is we have firewall iptables in our linux box. when the iptables is stopped we can connect the postgres db locally using -h option, also we can connect thru a weblink we have created using Jboss. But when the iptables is started we can't connect the db locally using the -h option and the web is giving the below error. Caused by:

I am having alot of trouble setting up evolution to work with gmail. I am using pop for recieving mail and it's slow but still works. When I try to send mail with smtp.gmail.com I get the error message that the connection timed out. How can I set this up to send and recieve email?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have 2 different networks :the first one is gateway machine (eth0), and the second is a private machine (eth1). So, I've configured the iptables and forwarding stuff and when I try to ping [url]..... on the gateway machine, it works, while it doesn't work on the private network. Note: I am using VmWare 7, CentOS 5.
I could say that the problem in DNS:because when I use this command in the private network machine: [url]...., it says connection timed out; no servers could be reached ,while in the public one, it works properly.....
