Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Hosts IP Conflict?

Aug 30, 2010

What happen if we assign a static IP address to both linux and windows host?Consider host A is a ubuntu machine and host B is a windows machine. I first set a static IP for host A (W.X.Y.Z) and connect to it through ssh. Then I duplicate that IP for host B (W.X.Y.Z).The result was that I could no longer connect to the ubuntu machine!

CentOS 5 Server :: Hosts File And Resolv.conf Conflict CentOS 5.5?

Apr 11, 2011

I am running an application that requires use of my /etc/hosts file. In it, I have my machine name and its LAN ip address. The program creates a service on a specific port, then attempts to connect to it based on the host name. So my hosts file has to be correct.I added the nameservers to resolv.conf and now my application will not run. My guess is that the computer is checking the name servers first, timing out then checking the hosts file.Is there a way I can tell the system to check the hosts file first, then DNS. I thought it should behave that way by default, but it does not appear to.

Ubuntu Networking :: Proxy Settings: Allowed Hosts Instead Of Ignored Hosts

Aug 17, 2011

Well, as many proxy applications, GNOME Network Proxy Preferences only allow to ignore hosts. What I want to do is exactly the opposite. I only want to use the proxy for few sites. Is it possible to define only the allowed hosts in any way?

PS: I know FoxyProxy add-on for Firefox does this, but 1)I don't use Firefox and 2)I want the proxy settings system wide not only for browser.

CentOS 5 :: KVM With Windows 2008 Guest - ACPI Conflict

Mar 12, 2009

Centos version: 2.6.18-92.el5
Processor:Intel Xeon L5420 Quad-Core
Guest OS:Windows Server 2008 Web

KVM is istalled using these instructions: [URL] When I run qemu-kvm to boot a VM off the Windows Install .iso with the -no-acpi parameter the VM displays the following:

Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start...
Status 0xc0000225

Without the -no-acpi parameter, the Windows Server 2008 guest shows a blue screen with "stop: 0x000000A5" meaning "The ACPI Bios in this system is not fully compliant to the specification." [URL] 386/32bit and x86/64bit versions of CentOs both exhibit the problem. IT WORKS after I compiled and installed the latest versions of the Kernel (2.6.28.7) and KVM (84) (Using these instructions: [URL] Following advice [URL] I really don't want to run a custom kernel. I compiled various KVM versions with the 2.6.18 kernel but still get the ACPI problem or compiler errors or "Hypervisor too old: KVM_CAP_USER_MEMORY extension not supported" How to get a Windows Server 2008 guest running in KVM on Centos?

I tried to figured out what's wrong browsing the logs (messages & dmesg & mail/root)... but nothing usefull so far...Then I hearded that a collegue booted a old Windows machine the day before. General :: Windows XP Vmware Guest Unable To Access Certain Internet Hosts

Jan 28, 2010

I have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version.

everything works fine on Linux host

I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc.

I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help

Fedora Networking :: 12 - Network Works Only For A Few Seconds (vmnet Conflict)?

Dec 7, 2009

I have a Fedora 12 box, which works absolutely fine in a fastweb wlan. However, if I connect to another wlan where I need to link to a wireless access point cabled to the ISP modem/router, networkmanager shows the connection is ok, but...

1) I only can browse internet (es:www.google.it) for a few seconds after the connection is established, thanfirefox goes "Impossible to reach the server"

2) the same behaviour is confirmed by ping

Code:

[Adriano@localhost ~]$ ping www.google.it
PING www.l.google.com (209.85.135.106) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from mu-in-f106.1e100.net (209.85.135.106): icmp_seq=1 ttl=49 time=138 ms
64 bytes from mu-in-f106.1e100.net (209.85.135.106): icmp_seq=2 ttl=49 time=127 ms

[code]....

EDIT: There is a win box in the same net that is working fine.I see in the router config that ARP for the working machine is "complete", while for the Fedora one is "incomplete" Nothing changes configuring a static or dynamic IP address for the Fedora box I had a previous Fedora 11 installation on the same machine that now gives troubles, and it worked fine. But I can't tell if it's a software problem because my ISP seems to have telnet-ed the router, changing it's firmware (and maybe it's config). Shame on they.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Get Hosts.deny Work In 10.04

My simple test case was to add "ALL: ALL " to the end of hosts.deny which I though should make the Internet not work. I can still look up hosts fine so apparently I don't understand these files or Ubuntu is ignoring them.

This is my hosts.deny file

Code:

Code:

Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: Way To Have / Etc / Hosts File Re-read Sooner?

Feb 28, 2011

I often manually add a troublesome domain (e.g., advertisements, fake virus alerts, etc.) to my /etc/hosts file on Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid; but the effect isn't immediate. My hosts file is already fifteen thousand lines long (having combined all the hosts files I could find on the net, including the MVP one); but I still, almost daily, find a new irritant to add to my /etc/hosts file.My problem is I do not understand WHEN the /etc/hosts file is next read after a change.I've been rebooting to make sure the hosts is re-read; but there must be a simpler way.My question:

- WHEN is the /etc/hosts file reconsidered in Ubuntu?
- Is there a way to have the /etc/hosts file re-read sooner?

Ubuntu Networking :: Vbox Guests On 2 Different Hosts Need To Connect?

Jul 15, 2011

In my home network I have two ubuntu desktops that are connected to a router. On each pc I have installed Virtual Box 3.2 and various OSes. I need to sometimes run multiple vm's at the same time which is very RAM intensive so I was wondering if there is any way to connect VM's on different hosts so that they appear they are in the same network? Various articles that show up as search results hardly pertain to what I want to do. Basically, I would like to make vm's visible in the network but on different hosts and with ip addresses that would reflect that those vm's are on a same network. Like ubuntu 1 has vm's a and b and ubuntu 2 has c and d. When I start all of the vm's, I would like them to connect to each other just like they are in the same network without "knowing" they are on different hosts.

My laptop is sometimes on the same network, and sometimes not. Also, sometimes the dyndns doesn't update properly, or the outside connection is down, but I want to get to my desktop (and I'm too lazy to walk up the stairs). I'd like to be able to keep one set of bookmarks, ssh command aliases, etc. that would always get to it the fastest and most reliable way possible.
