I run a local apache server, that has some virtual hosts running. Now I want to be able to locally connect to these virtual hosts, but when I try this, it puts www and .com behind the url and says it can't find it. On Windows I know the equivalent, editing the hosts file. Is there something similar in linux?

What happen if we assign a static IP address to both linux and windows host?Consider host A is a ubuntu machine and host B is a windows machine. I first set a static IP for host A (W.X.Y.Z) and connect to it through ssh. Then I duplicate that IP for host B (W.X.Y.Z).The result was that I could no longer connect to the ubuntu machine!

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am trying to setup a basic file server, but seem to be stuck with the editing of the allow.hosts file. I installed the latest Debian, and when I try to edit it, and then save, it says I dont have permissions.
As a sidenote, I dont mean to belittle linux or start a debate, I am behind the whole open source/free software thing, but every time I say to myself, "okay, time to give Linux another chance", I cant believe how difficult it is to do even the most simplist of tasks. No wonder MS is still on top. If only one could do it ALL from a GUI.
This really has me baffled! I'm running Apache 2.2 on Windows Server 2003 (I know, my first blunder). I can edit existing virtual hosts without a problem, for example, I can change this existing vhost to point to a different document root and it works fine:

But the moment I try to add a new virtual host, it doesn't get recognized! When I try to browse to it in a browser, I get a "Server not found: Firefox can't find the server at newsubdomain.mellemallc.net."

Well, as many proxy applications, GNOME Network Proxy Preferences only allow to ignore hosts. What I want to do is exactly the opposite. I only want to use the proxy for few sites. Is it possible to define only the allowed hosts in any way?
PS: I know FoxyProxy add-on for Firefox does this, but 1)I don't use Firefox and 2)I want the proxy settings system wide not only for browser.
I have setup samba (samba + openldap) as my pdc. Some windows systems which are added to the domain are not visible through the windows xp's network neighborhood. However all the clients can login, browse other systems except for those which are not listed in the network neighborhood. I have attached the smb.conf file for reference.

The why: I have dyndns and port forwarding to get to my desktop. My laptop is sometimes on the same network, and sometimes not. Also, sometimes the dyndns doesn't update properly, or the outside connection is down, but I want to get to my desktop (and I'm too lazy to walk up the stairs). Is running dual boot with XP, the problem is i dont have internet connection(wireless and wired) with Ubuntu but i do with XP. I read like hundreds of posts from diferent forums and i wrote all crazy commands in terminal but aint working. I tried directly trough the modem (motorolla 2210)and with the router(netgear wgr614) via wired and wireless and aint working either. For some reason ubuntu doesnt request an ip adress from the router or the router dont asign an ip adress to my linux box.

Can some kind of a firewall (corporate, locally installed, Windows firewall, etc) block this traffic? Got it all to work ok, for a while but then when I reboot the entries I've made in the hosts file dissapear and I can no longer use them.
I'm assuming DHCP reverts the hosts file or something?
What's the 'proper' way to get an entry into a hosts file and have it stay there?
I run a few virtual servers at home behind a NAT, including an e-mail server, with dynamically updated dns records pointing to each of the servers. Consequently, I suffer from the loopback problem when working with these servers from my desktop PC. (E.g., I ping one of the dns hostnames and the ping goes to my router instead of the server). I fixed this problem by manually adding the in-home IP addresses and name pairs to my /etc/hosts, and then setting /etc/host.conf to a "hosts, bind" order.
This seems to work for every application on my desktop except for one: the postfix installation on my desktop PC (used for mailing smartctl messages and so forth) cannot communicate with my in-home e-mail server (times out). I checked the logs, and it looks like it is trying to use the IP address from the actual A-RECORD, rather than the address in my hosts file.
So I'm not quite sure what to do. There seems to be a "proxy_interfaces" parameter in main.conf which might be relevant, but I think it only deals with received mail. I'd prefer to have the mail going to that e-mail server, rather than also having to check the spool on my local desktop accounts.
