View 2 RepliesI'm just an undergrad with duck tape and google searches to hold this place together. Anyways on to my question. Where I work, we have a tape library but no way to configure it, the backup software simply talks to the robot to load and unload tapes. There is a network port on the library and I do have the software, but have been running into problems getting access. I was wondering, is there a way to determine the ip address of this machine by plugging in a cross over cable with a laptop and scanning it? What tools could I use to do this?

I have an HP Laserjet 3.I can use it in normal Windows mode, or as a Postscript printer.it is an older printer, but it is still listed in the driver database. The cups setup tool cannot autodetect this printer. Also, if I select the actual driver for this printer, the cups tool still reports that no printer has been selected. I cannot add that driver for some reason. So, now I have to become an expert in cups configuration. Where is the cups HOWTO? Not in the SuSE howto section. Online? A little support there, but not SuSE specific. Does this local printer need to be a "network" printer? If so, how to I determine what internet address to use?

View 3 Replies View RelatedCurrently my OS is Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope Desktop OS and my web server is Apache2. I have a public address 60.x.y.z and my pc local address is 10.x.y.z. I have a web app in my Apache2 which currently run in localhost(10.x.y.z).
I would like to enable the web app so that it could be browse from outside. I know there maybe some port forwarding process and some commands involved in order to do that. But I have no idea on the steps to do that.
Version 10.04 LTS. Installed desktop version and network worked but I needed a static IP address and the install configures for a DHCP configured address. I tried changing to static address using the System->Preferences->Network Connections application but was unable to get the system to come up with the network up.
So I manually modified the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. I restart the system but when I do an ifconfig, I don't see a configured IP address on eth0 (only the loopback address). If I run /sbin/ifup eth0 everything then works fine and ifconfig shows the correct address bound to eth0.
My files are as follows:
I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 and I'm having problems trying to assign it a static IP address. No matter what I put in the Preferences->Networking area (identifying the interface as Manual)... it still will query DHCP for an address if I run the dhclient command. I'm using to using ubuntu server where I just set the IP in the interfaces config file.

I am running my own Postfix mail server. Some time ago I noticed that most email was rejected because of the server's dynamic IP address. So I got a fixed IP address. However then I noticed that some mails got rejected due to failing the reverse DNS check. So my ISP told me to get a range of IP addresses and they could then create a PTR record for one of those addresses. That is now running but it turns out that the IP address used for the PTR record is a ... dynamic IP address. So Spamhaus PBL rejects my emails again.

The most likely problem is obviously that the firewall in the router is blocking access. I know how to open ports in the router's firewall, but how do I determine which port or ports need to be opened?
I have asked my email provider, and that have replied that the port can vary and I need to get my technical support people to do it. Obviously they struggle to understand the concept of 'small business"!

when the machine rebooted, eth0 has the ip address 192.168.24.234. But if executing 'dhclient', eth0 will get the ip address 10.200.34.208, which is my expected ip address. I'm not quite familiar with networking things. I don't know what's going on there. Why should I need to execute 'dhclient' to obtain the expected ip address? Is there any way to obtain the ip address 10.200.34.208 right after host boot?
