View 3 RepliesThe configuration of swat and samba. I have tried the vi edit approach but there is no save option so after I edit it and close it, it just says the terminal is in the middle of a process and closing will kill it or something to that effect. Of course then it doesn't save the changes. That reminds me that I do su to root before I do this. I have also tried the pam edit in order to allow myself to log on to root from the gui but that doesn't work either. Am I missing something? I can't imagine how you are supposed to configure anything if it won't let you even in root. Would the fact that my user and root passwords are the same effect this in anyway? I'm desperate as this is for a school project and obviously I'm new to linux.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running ubuntu 10.04 and I need to set up samba. I haven't used samba since ubuntu 8.10 and I don't know if there have been changes that I'm not aware of. I remember it being a simple process that started with editing the configuration file, but I keep getting this message:
Code:

Am I missing something? Has the configuration file changed names?

I'm a very -slightly- advanced Samba user. I believe I know the basics of editing the smb.conf and I know to use smbpasswd to update the Samba users database.I have a group of identical shares.They are readOnly for the group @movies-play and they are (supposed to be) writeable by specific users. The readOnly group works great, no prob there, but I cannot get write access for the specified users. They are in the Samba user database using smbpasswd -a mark and neelix.Here is the share section in my smb.conf...
Code:
[movies-usb3]
path = /media/usb3/movies
guest ok = no[code]....
I have the workgroup and netbios info set. I have security=user set. The folder 'movies' in the path above is owned by 'mark' so it seems I should be able to write in it but I can't.I'm connecting to the share (it's on a server running Lucid) from my laptop (running Lucid. I added this mount info to fstab...
Code:
//spock/movies-usb3 /media/spockmovies3 cifs credentials=/home/mark/.smbpasswd 0 0
Of course spock in the hosts file so it resolves. I can see the share fine, just can't write.
setting up samba! I am a frequent user of FreeBSD and Ubuntu. Those two automatically display the workgroups in my workplace when I use them after installing with no configuration at all. They just work out of the box! How can I configure samba in the same way in Fedora 12 so that I can access the workgroup shares at work? Fedora 12 works like a charm on my laptop. Ubuntu crashes every so often! That's why I am sticking to Fedora 12. My Workplace computers run FreeBSD

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a wacom graphire3 tablet and two monitors. The tablet is workin properly with out of the box drivers.
As well as the dual monitors configured as twinview through Nvidia X server. But the tablet is mapped for the two screens, then I searched the forums for a proper configuration and it it tells me to edit the xorg.conf file for twinview horizontal but, it don't make any difference. I've "sudo gedit" edited the xorg.conf and nothing happens. Nothing, the tablet is working properly, the system is stable and it's still mapped for two screens.
What can I do? The xorg.conf also isn't listing all my hardware, I can't see the confs for my mouse. I'm on karmic koala.
All I need to do is get my screen resolution to 1024x768, I can currently only get 800x600 and that's unacceptable for school. I created an xorg.conf file in Lucid and it does in fact refer to and use it. what led me to believe that is when I looked in the mirror and noticed smoke slowly rolling out of my ears! After replacing some of that smoke with a cigarette I decided to make this thread. As I said, I created the xorg.conf.new file with:
Code:
sudo Xorg -configure from recovery mode. And then moved it to its proper place with:
Code:
cp /home/william/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
And that nested it right where it needs to be. X does in fact use it as confirmed by my Xorg.0.log.
Now I have an xorg.conf file, but am quickly becoming overwhelmed with information as to what to do. I've tried to create mode lines with xrandr, which gave me new settings, but I was unable to use them. Obviously the EDID info. is not being read because there is no mention of clock speed, Vsync or Hsync in my Xorg.0.log either. I have tried many things and really don't have time to spend all day at my computer, at least not with this issue. I'm in school and have to focus primarily on that right now. I will give what info I know is relevant starting with my monitor specs:
Dynex DX-LCDTV19
vertical resolution: 720 p
aspect ratio: 16:10
screen refresh rate: 60hz
comb filter: 3D/YC digital

I currently have 2 GPUs in my system both ATI. The primary is a HD4870 and the secondary is a HD4350.
I have a 24" and a 17" running in twin view from the 4870 but I can't figure out a way to enable my third monitor to display anything at all, I have tried multiple configurations but I end up breaking the xorg every time.
All I simply want to do is keep my twinview on the monitors run by the 4870 but have the third monitor as a separate X session so I can still use compiz. Here is my xorg file, it was generated by aticonfig.
Code:
Section "ServerLayout"
Identifier "aticonfig Layout"

Using Debian Lenny.I am new to printing with Linux and would like some help with CUPS. I have CUPS set up to work with my printer.I read through the documentation, but still have some problems.
1. How should I configure cupsd.conf for security?
Quote:
Portwalling
* By default, cups will listen on every interface. Unless you want to offer your printer to the world, you must block this.Although you can firewall this (and that is a good idea anyway),you can also not have cups listen on your Internet connection.This also prevents any possibility of a root exploit from the Internet. Of course, you still have internal crackers to worry about...
* In cups.conf, comment out the lines:
Port 80
Port 631
* Replace them with:
Listen 127.0.0.1:631
code....
How do I create a symbolic link between programs?When I opened Xpp it said Printer:destination not available.
4. Can I adjust the text size on text, pdf or html files with Cups or do I need another program for this?
I did fresh install of Slackware64 ver. 13.0 and immediately updated it to slackware-current by following the directions here: http://slackwiki.org/Upgrading_SlackwareSo far all is normal and functional except for xorg-server.When I did Xorg -configure under ver.13.0, it worked perfectly and detected my nvidia 8800 GTS vidcard and 1440 x 900 lcd monitor.However, after upgrading to "current" and xorg-server-1.9.4, I'm getting a segmentation fault and cannot configure a working xorg.conf.I've been searching xorg seg errors, but haven't found a solution yet.My /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using RHEL 9 I want to install swat utility on this,where i can download the RPMs of?
1. samba-comman
2. samba-utils
3. swat
I just installed swat, but I'm unable to connect. I read the "man swat" file and it says that I have to modify the /etc/inet.d/swat file, which in my install does not exist; however, I found the /etc/xinetd.d/swat file, and I edited setting disable=no, and also setting only_host=to my ip address. After that I restarted the server "service xinetd restart" because "service inetd restart" doesn't work, so I checked if the port was listening with netstat -l | grep 901. Again no service is listening on that port..
