Software :: Setting Up CUPS / Configure Cupsd.conf For Security?
Apr 21, 2010
Using Debian Lenny.I am new to printing with Linux and would like some help with CUPS. I have CUPS set up to work with my printer.I read through the documentation, but still have some problems.
1. How should I configure cupsd.conf for security?
Quote:
Portwalling
* By default, cups will listen on every interface. Unless you want to offer your printer to the world, you must block this.Although you can firewall this (and that is a good idea anyway),you can also not have cups listen on your Internet connection.This also prevents any possibility of a root exploit from the Internet. Of course, you still have internal crackers to worry about...
* In cups.conf, comment out the lines:
Port 80
Port 631
* Replace them with:
Listen 127.0.0.1:631
code....
How do I create a symbolic link between programs?When I opened Xpp it said Printer:destination not available.
4. Can I adjust the text size on text, pdf or html files with Cups or do I need another program for this?

cups does not start with the server. When I try to start from the terminal I get the error message
cupsd: Unable to read configuration file '/etc/cups/cupsd.conf' - exiting!
cupsd: Child exited with status 1!
The log files show nothing. cupsd.conf exists. It is user - root and group - root with permissions set at 0644.
My interpretation of this is that the program is not launching from either boot or terminal for a fundamental reason. I do not quite see what that reason is .

Running: Ubuntu 10.10
I'm in a bind and I don't know how to get what I want. Nmap shows ipp running cups on port 631. Great, simple enough I uninstall cups, along with its dependencies. A new portscan reveals that the port is closed SUCCESS, but... Ubuntu Update Manager nags me @ every restart about the "important security" updates. I can't lock the version of cups in Synaptic, because cups is not installed! So you see I'm in a bind. If I have cups installed I have an open port, and if I uninstall cups the update manager nags me. What do I do? I've tried:
- stopping the cups service and issuing the chkconfig cups off command... (doesn't close the port)
- uninstalling cups... (update manager nags)
- fuser -k 631/tcp (great, but @ reboot the port is still open)
Please teach me how to close this port / stop this service / tell update manager to shove cups.....

Is it possible to setup a printer without cups, most of Linuxes try to setup cups, which is basically for Notworks, but it really doesn't help much with a stand alone and more of nuisance and a hindrance.

I have an Ubuntu Server running CUPS-PDF successfully. The problem that I am running into now is that we want to have different CUPS-PDF queues.Example:Joe from Finance wants his PDF prints to go to /home/finance which is samba shared out to all users in Finance. Mark from Operations needs logs printed out to /home/ops which is samba shared to all users in Operations and must be landscape.Finance and Operations print from the command line (lp -d print-queue filename) on the server via ssh since their app runs from a terminal.
I have looked and looked all over the net and through the cups-pdf documentation to see if there is a way to force the URI for the cups-pdf print queue instead of it going to the default of $HOME/Desktop as stated in my /etc/cups/cups-pdf.conf file. Basically, I want to set up a cups pdf printer called Finance, Advert and Ops that has all the options they need so when they print something from the linux applications, and they tell it to print to the virtual printer that they have permission to use and it go to the respective directory that they have access too.

I recently got a Samsung ML-1660 printer and while it worked fine with the unified linux driver provided by Samsung, I didn't really like how that driver did its business with regards to installing old static libraries and other stuff that I don't need and most certainly don't want going stale and causing problems down the track.
1) Download the Samsung unified printer driver from their website (UnifiedLinuxDriver_*.tar.gz)
2) Extract /cdroot/Linux/noarch/at_opt/share/ppd/ML-1660spl.ppd to a temporary directory.
3) For 32 bit: extract /cdroot/Linux/i386/at_root/usr/lib/cups/filter/rastertosamsung* to a tmp dir
4) For 64 bit: extract /cdroot/Linux/x86_64/at_root/usr/lib64/cups/filter/rastertosamsung* to a tmp dir

how to get clients connecting to an office printer. during a migration from windows server to debian/samba.
We have:
5 windows XP machines one Windows Server 2003 machine, PDC of the old domain One debian Samba PDC (of TEST domain)/print server (with CUPS installeD) running in a virtual machine hosted by the windows server One Toshiba eStudio 3511 printer
Using the CUPS control panel, I've been able to autodetect and add the printer, and it appears as an available share in SWAT for samba. However, the driver isn't perfect. CUPS could only supply drivers for the 3510c, not the 3511.
However, clients on the TEST domain are unable to access it. Doing so gives an error about a local policy preventing a connection to the print queue. I've tried googling this error and the fix that comes up in every result about changing a point and print policy setting, does not work.
however, I've been able to work around the issue. by first logging in as local administrator, navigating to the domain server, then inputting the domain root account credentials at the prompt. That allows me to attempt to connect to printers, but with a different error
"The server for the printer does not have the correct driver installed...."
I very strongly suspect that the 3510 driver actually will work, but it's just not being shared properly. The printer driver share folder is /var/lib/samba/printers, and that directory contains only a few empty subfolders. CUPS did not place the driver there as I would expect, and that is where clients are looking for it.
The thing is, I have no idea where CUPS DID put the driver.
On the old domain, the printer uses drivers for es4511, and looking on the toshiba site, this seems to be what they provide. The Toshiba Site provides a huge variety of drivers, including several windows ones, a universal driver, and a CUPS PPD. Cups asks for an optional PPD during install and I tried supplying that. It said installed successfully, but didn't change anything.
I've tried pasting the windows drivers into /var/lib/samba/printers/W32X86 too, and likewise with other drivers from toshiba's site. but this doesn't change anything either, so I'm at a bit of a loss.
how to install/setup drivers on a samba PDC, for windows machines?
Also relevant, my smb.conf:
anyone see any possible causes of problems?
# Samba config file created using SWAT
# from UNKNOWN ()

After struggling with a bad LP cable I have finally proven that the cable, printer and port all work. I booted in to another OS and was able to finally print. Now, I'm trying to get server 10.4 to recognize the printer and then I want to configure CUPs so I can run this machine as a headless print server, among other things.
Apache is running as I managed to get nagios to run and I can pull it up from another PC via a browser.
sshd is running as I'm logged in from another PC via ssh.
Problem number 1 is how do I install a driver for an NEC Superscript 870 printer? As it is lpstat returnes with :
karl@zeus:/etc/cups$ lpstat -t
scheduler is not running
no system default destination
Once I am able to print then I need to print to the server from other hosts on the network.

I just installed 11.2, and discovered when I went to setup my Logitech Marble Trackball, that there was no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. After some Googleing, I created one using sax2, Edited it to add the appropriate parameters to enable scrolling using the ball, and all works great.
My question is if there is a more "correct" way to change the parameters, as the mouse parameters are obviously stored somewhere on the machine.
BTW, for those with a Marble Trackball, all you need to know about the xorg.conf setup can be found here:

I am setting up a display system that will not have a keyboard/mouse and automatically boots into gnome and starts up firefox to a display page. The page is optimized to a 720p resolution which I can set when we use a TV for the display, but is not an option if we use a monitor. I am trying to find a way to set the resolution to 720p automatically on boot up. I am always using 16x9 displays with a DVI connection (to HDMI on TVs)
I was able to get one monitor working by creating a script and setting it to load in the Startup Applications as shown:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
scnres="1280 720 60"
modeline=$(cvt -v $scnres | grep Modeline)
modeline=${modeline#Modeline }

I have a wacom graphire3 tablet and two monitors. The tablet is workin properly with out of the box drivers.
As well as the dual monitors configured as twinview through Nvidia X server. But the tablet is mapped for the two screens, then I searched the forums for a proper configuration and it it tells me to edit the xorg.conf file for twinview horizontal but, it don't make any difference. I've "sudo gedit" edited the xorg.conf and nothing happens. Nothing, the tablet is working properly, the system is stable and it's still mapped for two screens.
What can I do? The xorg.conf also isn't listing all my hardware, I can't see the confs for my mouse. I'm on karmic koala.

All I need to do is get my screen resolution to 1024x768, I can currently only get 800x600 and that's unacceptable for school. I created an xorg.conf file in Lucid and it does in fact refer to and use it. what led me to believe that is when I looked in the mirror and noticed smoke slowly rolling out of my ears! After replacing some of that smoke with a cigarette I decided to make this thread. As I said, I created the xorg.conf.new file with:
Code:
sudo Xorg -configure from recovery mode. And then moved it to its proper place with:
Code:
cp /home/william/xorg.conf.new /etc/X11/xorg.conf
And that nested it right where it needs to be. X does in fact use it as confirmed by my Xorg.0.log.
Now I have an xorg.conf file, but am quickly becoming overwhelmed with information as to what to do. I've tried to create mode lines with xrandr, which gave me new settings, but I was unable to use them. Obviously the EDID info. is not being read because there is no mention of clock speed, Vsync or Hsync in my Xorg.0.log either. I have tried many things and really don't have time to spend all day at my computer, at least not with this issue. I'm in school and have to focus primarily on that right now. I will give what info I know is relevant starting with my monitor specs:
Dynex DX-LCDTV19
vertical resolution: 720 p
aspect ratio: 16:10
screen refresh rate: 60hz
comb filter: 3D/YC digital

I currently have 2 GPUs in my system both ATI. The primary is a HD4870 and the secondary is a HD4350.
I have a 24" and a 17" running in twin view from the 4870 but I can't figure out a way to enable my third monitor to display anything at all, I have tried multiple configurations but I end up breaking the xorg every time.
All I simply want to do is keep my twinview on the monitors run by the 4870 but have the third monitor as a separate X session so I can still use compiz. Here is my xorg file, it was generated by aticonfig.
