View 5 RepliesI tried the openssi for debian. I've tried linux from scratch but flopped trying to get mosix or kerrighed on it. Anyone got a simple way to go to get a hard drive installed single system image cluster with 32 bit machines. I'm not a new linux user but I have seemed to reach the limit of my skills. I don't like the live cds because I plan to add software later. The live cds don't fit my needs.

Second Problem: /etc/init.d/xorg start : No such file or directory When the server boots i get a blinking cursor.
I just installed Fedora 15 with the gnome desktop which looks like the android system for mobile phones, I installed wine which put the icons on my desktop but whenever I install a windows app it doesn't put an icon on my desktop for that particular application. How would I add an icon for those window apps so I can lunch them from the desktop, I don't know if you call that the desktop or just the program luncher either way how do I put an icon there so I can run those windows apps from there?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a pretty powerful computer and GPU that I'd like to fully utilize.I've been using Linux for the better part of 10 years and I'd like to know (as I can't think of a way) how I can use a single PC as a desktop AND a media center.My vision would be to essentially have to separate workstations on one PC. My desk monitor will be station one (desktop) and my TV will be station two (media center)... both should work independently of each other as if neither knows the other exists.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'd like to install Debian GNU/Linux on a single drive (SSD) desktop computer.The filesystem of choice is BTRFS and a couple of thing are not really clear to me:
- is a swap partition still necessary and what's the best fs for it?
- what partition scheme would be suggested?
I thought about 2 different btrfs partitions, one for /home and one for / (root) but from what I read if I'm giving the raw drive to BTRFS that would be more beneficial performance-wise, is that correct? (actually I don't even know if 2 btrfs partitions on the same drive is even possible).
If should I got for "donating" the raw/whole drive to btrfs which subvolumes scheme would be suggested for an easy management of the snapshots and backups? should /home be a subvolume or that's not really necessary.
When Desktop Effects are enabled in KDE the window for Tecplot 'bleeds' through, as if ~40% transparent in various regions. Disabling desktop effects fixes this, however, I would like to keep them. Is there a way to disable desktop effects on a single window/application?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI like 11.04 with Unity however I would like to find a method of managing workspaces with mouse (not keyboard) which gives constant visual feedback and is faster than using the launcher bar, which although not 'slow', takes time to appear and it then takes time to locate the (non movable) desktop switcher item.I happily adopt most of what 11.04 (Unity) offers, however, I really still miss the good visual feedback and the single click action that the lower panel (classic) desktop switcher used. Is there a way of me using some item in unity which is closely similar?

View 7 Replies View RelatedMy husband has been using Ubuntu just about forever now. He just upgraded to the newest version but has been having problems. He tried to do a regular upgrade and after it installed his screen had wallpaper and that's it. No icons or task bar or anything. He decided to do a clean install to see if that would help, and it's still that way.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a pretty much a linux newbie with some spare compy parts so I've decided to make a server to further my experience in the linux world. I recently installed Ubuntu 10.04 Desktop (was easier than Server edition with no GUI). What I want is a file server to share movies / music with my friends at school, that we could remotely access from school. I would like to leave this server at home.
I have read a lot on the net but I have not found someone with the same situation as me so have not got far. This would probably involve a single user login which I would give all so it would be strictly read-only, while only 1 user (me) would have admin capabilities. Is this even possible? I would be willing to try Ubuntu 10.04 server if anyone thinks it would be easier.
I would like to adjust Xinerama to place 1 desktop on each of my 2 monitors and not stretch a single over both. With the current set up there is a problem with window placement upon opening new widows or context dialog boxes. I realize that I could adjust placement properties and select window placement with the mouse but this is still lacking in productivity. My monitors are not next to on another so this is more of a problem than it seems.
View 4 Replies View RelatedOk so i have a IOn based PC that i use for only xbmc. I previously had a full ubuntu 9.11 install.
I had to reformat the drive but i could not get audio working. I gave the ION Optimized live CD a go and it worked with HDMI audio running perfectly. The thing is when i close xbmc i don't have a desktop, it just goes to command line.
I need to install lirc, copy some keymap files into my xbmc folder and then setup wireless. What would be the best way? Can it all be done through command line? Can i install a desktop environment?
How can I check the version of Ubuntu 11.04 installed in my desktop: 32 or 64 bit ?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just recently installed Kubuntu desktop onto Ubuntu and I don't have any shutdown or restart options shown in KDE, but they show up in Gnome. I initially installed Kubuntu using GDM instead of KDM and switched to KDM when I saw that my Gnome taskbars overlayed my KDE taskbars. To switch from GDM to KDM I used the following command:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm
After enabling KDM the terminal suggested a command to configure KDM, however I can't remember the command. I ran it and I got a message that KDM was already configured.
I have apache2 on my system, and it stopped working since the router was messed with (not by me). I removed apache2 and deleted /etc/apache2, but if I install apache2 it doesn't bring the files back. How do I fix everything that I messed up so it's as if apache was never installed so I can install it again?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a good question. I have a friend that lives in an area where he cannot receive DSL or Cable internet. He has a phone line, and physically able to get DSL, but the company won't give him service. He has Verizon wireless, but the reception is bad and his service gets dropped too much.
I however, have DSL 3.0Mbps and want to know how I could get him a DSL modem to dial up to my server at my house and receive internet. I know that I would probably need two phone lines to do this, but apart from that.
I have been using ubuntu for more than 3 months now . I was wondering if could use LAN and Internet simultaneously in windows, why that should not work in ubuntu? I tried as much as I could, searched different forum and thought there is no way I can get around with it until recently I found a solution in a forum. For your information I use ppoe for connecting to Internet.
The solution was as simple as running this simple command sudo ifconfig eth0 192.168.x.x netmask 255.x.x.xI have replaced those x with my desired number. It worked like a charm! Now I could browse LAN shares and Internet simultaneously! How to do it and forget it? I mean I don't want to do it every time I dial my connection.
I just recently configured my cmake and system to finally be able to cmake && make && make install stuff. I did it specifically for the Smooth-Tasks plasmoid. Everything went smoothly on the install, and it appears that everything went the way it should.
Now, my problem is that it does not display in my Widgets window when I click "Add Widgets..." How do I get my self-installed Plasmoid to appear on this list, or at least be useable on my desktop?
I'm on openSuse 11.3 using KDE 4.4 btw.
My machine has ONE ethernet card and is on a LAN.IP address is assigned to hosts using DHCP.I can have more than one MAC address on LAN by running Virtual Machine and setting network to bridged. This way, my virtual machine simply acts like there is one more machine in the network.Running VMWare for this job is a a bit heavy on resources. Is there a way so that I can I can have 2 or more ip addresses with different MAC address on the same machine without having to run VirtualBox.
By googling, I think its related to bridging and tap. And, I am sure thatts NOT IP-ALIASING because in ip-aliasing both the ip addresses have the same MAC address.Basically, I want my system to have interfaces like:-eth0 - which was originally presentlo- thats always present :|newint0 - New interface with new MAC address and IP addresses which can access my LAN directly. Its like if I bind, let us suppose curl to this interface, its like a different connection
Here is my network setup:
Internet <-> [public IP] Router [192.168.x.x] <-> Local
Local <-> DMZ
Local <-> HostB
Local <-> HostC
I have a system set up as a DMZ which works great for accessing SSH and other various services. I have a dyndns account that points to my public IP and allows me to access my DMZ box from around the world. I would like to make a subdomain of my current dyndns account and point it to HostB so that it can host a webserver on it, and have another subdomain point to HostC with a separate webserver on it. each would have SSH, FTP, Etc and have to not conflict with one another behind one IP. I don't even know if it is possible, but it seems like if there is a request for dev.host.homelinux.com that packet would have to hit [URL]and could be iptable'd to be routed to the appropriate local machine somehow.
I am trying to uninstall the packages that were installed as part of kubuntu desktop. I have gotten ~3 quarters of them, but didn't know if there was a better way than trying to pore over synaptic.

Installing on 10.10 64-bit works fine following the instructions on url. The BBC Desktop functions well once I reenabled KWallet.
My problem is that when I refresh the repositories the BBC Desktop is reported as broken, and the reason seems to be that AdobeAir does not show as installed in Synaptic. It does not matter if I install AdobeAir using .deb or .bin, it still is not reported as installed. Any ideas about how to make AdobeAir show as installed?
I am using Ubuntu Maverick and I wanted to try the xubuntu desktop environment, so I installed xubuntu-desktop package from synaptic package manager. There were many programs automatically installed with the xubuntu-desktop.After trying the xubuntu desktop, I didn't like it and removed it from synaptic package manager but it didn't remove the programs which were automatically installed with it.Is there any way to remove those programs without having to remove them one by one?
