I have Ubuntu 10.10 on a pc connected to my TV. I would like to be able to use remote desktop on this from another pc, so i enable Remote Desktop and apply the settings i need, but it says its only available through local network and to connect with the name localhost.
When i try and connect to the computers IP address from other computers with Ubuntu 10.10 on local network, it says it cannot find the server.
I have a firewall configuration program installed and have enabled VNC and the appropriate port(s)

I'm trying to configure my machine to allow remote desktop connections from outside my home network so i can connect at school, work etc. However, when setting up my remote desktop it says "Your desktop is only reachable over the local network. Others can access your computer using the address localhost." (see attached screenshot) My other linux machine has the same problem, but provides the IP address, is there something i'm missing?

I have a PC running Ubuntu 10.04 with vino to share the desktop. After I login to the PC I can connect to it from another PC (again 10.04) with the vinagre Remote Desktop Viewer. Canonical has made this rather easy to configure. However, I cannot connect to the remote PC and use the Desktop Viewer to login to the remote PC.
Short of ripping out vino and installing vnc or tightvnc is there a way to configure Ubuntu's desktop sharing to allow me to connect to the remote PC and then login?

is there any apps compatible with remote desktop? So my xubuntu system can connect to my windows system using the existing set up for remote desktop... or do I need to install a new client/server or thing on both systems? I do not mind doing that if you can recommend a good client/server but would prefer to just connect to the existing remote desktop if possible

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on a friends computer when Windows died on it, and though she has had relatively few problems with it, she still occasionally has problems that are really hard to impossible to fix over the phone. She is also not very knowledgeable with computers, so I was trying to guide her through setting up so I could connect to her remotely and try to figure things out, but I cannot get it to work.
I personally don't use Ubuntu on my computer, I use openSUSE and KDE so that does add to the problem, though I have used Ubuntu and Gnome a lot in the past.
I had her go to remote desktop settings and allow connections from other computers and allow other users to control the desktop, and at first I had her require confirmation and a password but it didn't work without it either. When I try to connect, it just hangs for a while then times out. I tried using KRDC and just VNC in the terminal with the same result.
There should be nothing on my side preventing a connection, but I am not positive. I am not very familiar with remote desktop outside of a LAN either. I am just trying to connect using her IP address, I don't know if there is anything else I need to include. Is there maybe some other setting that needs to be changed or maybe her DSL modem/router is blocking me though I don't know why it would, especially since P2P programs work fine.

I want to setup my linux PC so that I can use windows PC remote desktop to connect to my linux PC. I found a solution from the web that I use xrdp and sesman to connect to the linux PC. Also, the file startwm.sh has to be changed:
x11vnc -display :0 -localhost &
sleep 5
vncviewer localhost:0 -fullscreen
However, I found that it actually shared the desktop between the linux PC and my windows PC. Hence the speed is a bit slow. Are there any other approaches that work similar to windows remote desktop that can kick the current user who logged in (log him out) and only you access the desktop? I believe if it is possible to do that, the speed will be much improved. I am totally new to remote desktop setup and do not know each software how it works. I just followed the procedure step-by-step to set the xrdp and sesman up. Please give me some advice on the above situation.

I enabled remote desktop on my Fedora core machine.
SELinux is disabled, as is iptables.
I used UltraVNC to connect and it worked.
However, after I came back overnight, I tried to connect and it failed.
I received a "Failed to connect to server"
Found that the machine had rebooted.
How do I get it the Remote Desktop function to start as a service? I am new to Linux.

I am trying to connect to my laptop using tsclient in ubuntu and UltraVNC in XP.
I open tsclient in linux, enter the laptop IP and protocol = RDP, hit connect and it opens the windows logon, I can connect and login, but its not using UltraVNC (its running on the XP), I know this because I close UltraVNC from the remote desktop and the connection still works so it seems its using the windows built in remote desktop.
How can I connect to UltraVNC instead of XP default remote desktop?
I want to do this because I read UltraVNC works better for screen refreshs, my currently remote desktop connection works really bad for screen refreshs.

I maintain plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 systems for several friends. Each machine has only one user, the owner. I use Remote Desktop to instruct and to perform maintenance. Here's my problem:After updating the system, if the kernel has changed, a restart is needed. If I do a restart, I then have to phone the owner to insert his login credentials in the gdm login screen, before I can do anything else via Remote Desktop on that machine. There ought to be a simple way I can avoid the phone call and login myself.
I'd strongly prefer not to use any software that is not included in a plain vanilla Ubuntu 10.04 installation. And I don't want to weaken system security beyond what it is now.Is there a solution? Or, what is the simplest solution?

I downloaded the 10.10 desktop version. Everything seems to work fine except Firefox. Sure, I can get on, but getting out is something of a chore. Half the time the page freezes and won't allow me to try anything else.
I tried: Clicking on the red "X" = nothing
Right-clicking on the page and selecting "Back" = nothing
Right-clicking on the task bar and selecting "Close" = nothing
Restarting the computer = nothing
The only way to get out when that happens, is to hold down the "Power" button. I know it's not good for the computer, but being held hostage in Firefox is not good for my patience. Even that is a crap-shoot. Sometimes it boots back up fine, only to resume what happened before the power went out when I log back into Firefox. Sometimes it won't let me out until I scan back to the main page by using the arrows one page at a time. This kind of thing never happened when I had the 9.04.

Though I had solved this but I was premature. Here are the details. When I use HDMI to connect to my lcd TV it works fine in Windows7. (I have dual partitions W7/Ubuntu),but when I boot into Ubuntu and use HDMI, nothing happens.
lori@lori-laptop:~$ aplay -l

card 0: SB [HDA ATI SB], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]

also when I open the Gnome Alsa Mixer, under the HDMI tab, there is just a blank screen. I believe I have the latest Alsa releases.

I have a whitebox server with three network adapters, two gigabit adapters using the intel 82573V chips, and an intel pro/100 adapter based on the 82562 chip. These are embedded on an MSI motherboard. None are passing traffic.I initially booted the box using a Knoppix 5.0.1 CD, and the NICs worked fine. When I installed CentOS 5.4, no joy.Interestingly, Intel recommends the e1000e driver (which I am using), but the Knoppix CD used the e1000 driver. Anyway, I pulled an updated e1000e driver from elrepo, installed it, and verified that it was in use with 'ethtool --driver eth2', and the correct driver/version was displayed.
Symptoms are no traffic passes, rx/tx packet counts in ifconfig are both 0 (no errors, either). Routing table looks fine; three routes: one for 169.x.x.x, 172.16.x.x (my subnet), and one for 0.0.0.0, all destined for eth2, and all up. When I ping 127.0.0.1, and the local adapter address, I get good replies. As soon as I ping a remote host on my subnet, I get 'Destination host unreachable'. Now, at one point, I actually got it to work. I applied a small patch from Intel to change a value in the EEPROM, rebooted as instructed, and the adapter came up and passed traffic. I did a 'yum update' to update my packages, and shortly thereafter, everything stopped working again.

I have a home server running Ubuntu Server 10.10, it is running Samba for file sharing with a mix of Windows and Linux boxes in my house. My main problem is that the server is only accessible by IP or by using hostname.local, but it is not possible to connect to it by just typing the hostname. Further more, it is not being automatically discovered and listed by Windows or Linux clients.
What's really odd is that I also have an Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 install on a separate computer, and that computer is accessible using just the hostname and is automatically being discovered and listed by other computers.
What is missing on the server? What is responsible for resolving just hostname, avahi seems to only deal with hostname.local and that is working fine. I also compared the samba config of the desktop and server Ubuntu installs but wasn't able to find any setting that would be influencing this. Is there some package I'm missing on the server?

I installed Ubuntu (10.04) today and it has gone smoothly except for the fact that I can't connect to the Internet when in Ubuntu (connection works fine in Windows XP). I am using a wireless USB card (Linksys WUSB600N) to connect.
The weird thing is that the card detects all the local networks, asks me for a password to my network, and it even says it is connected to my network after I put the password in -- but when I open Firefox no pages will load.
There is another weird quirk as well: Ubuntu will not restart or shut down properly (it hangs around indefinitely with the little white / orange dots going across the screen) unless I first remove the wireless card from the USB slot. But that doesn't bother me as badly as the lack of Internet.

Before creating a DVD of an old movie, I tried to free up some hard disk space by burning a batch of old cartoons (Betty Boop, from the '30s.) to a data DVD, and deleting the directory after making sure the burn was good. The burn went fine, and the disc ejected correctly. (This is an important point!) I immediately re-inserted it so that I could check the contents, as I've done many times before, but it never showed up on my desktop.
(F10 with Gnome) I opened Nautilus and found two copies of the DVD listed, and both context menus listed both Mount and Eject, as though Gnome wasn't sure if it was or wasn't mounted. Checking, neither shows up in /media, /mnt or /etc/mtab. At this point, I can no longer mount it or any other disc. I've tried logging out and logging in, with no change. I'd consider a reboot, but my uptime has quite literally reached Biblical proportions and I hate to waste it if I don't have to. How to tell Fedora to let go of a DVD that isn't in the drive any longer?

I am unable to connect to a WEP-protected network. the Network manager log shows either a DHCP timeout, or a failure to associate. (attached below).Changing to WPA is not an option, as the network is not controlled by me. This is with the rt61pci driver for a Ralink 2500 series chipset.(Rosewill RNX-G300EX card)Manually forcing an IP does not result in a connection either. This is with the latest OpenSuSE 11.4, all patches applied. Router is a D-Link DIR-613, and I know the passphrase I'm using is correct because it connects both on my Android (what else?) phone, and my lappy when I boot XP.
