I am writing an installation script that sets up ssh keys and then sets up ssh tunnels. I want the ssh connections to be setup by the install script so that the first time you make the connections you don't need to type in yes when it asks if you confirm the brand new host. How can I get around that?
View 3 RepliesI just switched back from Mint 10, and while setting to work different input method apps like SCIM and Ibus, bumped into a problem(welcome back to SUSE). After installing Scim, my chinese input works only on one application (Goldendict), it doesn't work in any other app. So I tried Ibus, same result. SO far nothing helped me to make them work. What I 'm trying to find out. Is where I can setup language input method in SUSE, I haven't found such an option anywhere in KDE, yast. WHile in Mint there is such an option, where you can change your inpud method either to scim, xim, scim-bridge or ibus. I tried qtconfig, there I found it, P.S. Warning rage words!: I feel like I should say it. But my previous SUSE experience and overall usage history proves that there is no better distro than Ubuntu nowadays, this is sad indeed, cause I used to start from SUSE. But its true, SUSE is a real pain in the ***, when it comes to getting things done. It seems like whenever u try to setup something there is always a bad feeling of failure. Don't know, but again I'm been consecutively annoyed but its numbness. I'm sorry, cause I feel like I disregard ppl's hard work and support.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI want to install Xubuntu 10.10 x64, but it does not work. While copying data the setup tells me about an Input/Output error, but i don't think there are hardware errors.
The environment:
AMD Phenom II 1055t 6x2,8 Ghz
2x 2gb ram
Hitachi 1TB hard drive
Two partitions: 1st for Windows 7 Ultimate (NTFS), 2nd for my Data (NTFS)
So I decreased the size of the data partition and created two new partitions beside the Win7 partition and the data partition. The first is ext4-journal (20gb) the second is Swap (4gb). I've done that all by the Xubuntu setup.
I've downloaded the image from the german mirror (TU Chemniz) and checked the integrety via SHA1. Checksum was correct. I also checked the data after burning.
We formatted a USB stick to EXT3 for use on a linux formatted device.Now, when we try and transfer files from this ubuntu laptop onto the USB stick, it says permission denied.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu 10.04 as a vm in VMPlayer 3.0. My correct user password is required to log in. When I use the sudo command or enter an area that requires my password, the password box pops up as it should.
The problem is:
If I enter my actual password, it is not accepted.
But if I enter nothing, as in just hit enter, it works. It shouldn't.
That seems just a little backwards and I don't get it. I've re-installed the vm and still have the same problem.
My work has switched to Fuji Xerox printers, which up to today I've been able to print to simply by sending a PostScript file to their IP addresses. But as of today printing requires a login. Here are the (Windows) instructions:
"Start>Settings>Printers and Faxes>R-Click on the printer>Properties>Configuration>Accounting>Change the dropdown box �Use Login Name� to �Enter owner name�>Type in your staff ID number in the User ID box e.g. �e*******�>OK>Apply"
how do I apply this to CUPS? Where can I find an owner name in CUPS?
I use Ubuntu 8.04 and I deleted a few JPGs from the recycle bin. I googled looking for some methods of recovery, and discovered that the only ways to do so is through using the command line. I am a complete computer novice, and I know nothing about the command line, or how to use it. I was able to install Foremost. However, with this done, I couldn't manage to use it to recover anything from that point, partially because I only have 1 GB left on my computer space, and I can't delete anything or else it could overwrite the photos I want to recover.
This all boils down to two questions:
What needs to be done to complete and utilize foremost?
And lastly, and the more preferable option, can this be accomplished without the command line?
I am writing an installation script that installs several packages using apt-get. Is there a way to run that command with some sort of option that makes it so the user doesn't have to type Y to confirm the installation? The user needs to be run the script as sudo

View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been running squid3 proxy on a Ubuntu 10.04 machine for several months with no problems.It serves about 50 users ( win and Lin clients ) and is usually rock solid.
However, over the last few days problems occur.
The users lose connection and I have to restart squid and all is ok again. Sometimes it drops 4-5 times in an hour ans sometimes not for 6 hours or more. I know the problem is related to Squid as the actual internet connection is on and the squid machine can access the internet.
Restarting squid cures the problem.
How can I troubleshoot this ?
Checking the cache.log doesn't show anything strange as far as I can see.
Could it be that the cache file is full or something ?
I'm witting a piece of code that needs to read key presses. However I cannot use them as stream, but rather need discrete reads. The code is to simulate an io board interface. So When I press say "d" I need to read it in instantly, not wait for return. I've tried sdl, but no luck (I'm reading in a thread and it causes some problems) I'm using linux so can't use conio.h functions, I've tired gatch from cureses but this still waits for return.So in C/c++ is there a way I can read instant key presses.

When I try to burn a DVD, there is not enough room. I don't know how to "split" it. Is there such a thing as a 7GB DVD? I have looked and only computers pop up when I google it. Therefore I have to enable it manually upon boot so that it works.I'm using Fedora 10, fresh installed and updated. I've noticed through search that others have had this issue as well throughout other versions of Fedora, yet I have not found a conclusive solution to this.

Im trying to setup multiple domU through the default bridge setup. I am able to access only one of them through the network at a time. If you ping one of the domU it works perfectly but you cannot ping any of the others until you stop pinging the one and even then it takes a bit before you can. Ive looked around for a while and seen similar problems but nothing ever seems quite the same. Im probably missing something really stupid. Or is this the way the bridge is supposed to behave? Do i need to use a routed virtual network?

I recently got a real fancy unidirectional microphone, but when I go and use it, something strange happens. The mic is a mono mic, but when I record something, it appears to think it's stereo. Instead of having the same thing on both channels, it puts it all in the left channel, and silence on the right channel.
I tried fiddling with alsamixer. In capture (F4), adjusting the "Capture" device has an effect. However, it doesn't do anything useful. Lowering the right channel to zero does nothing, lowering the left channel to zero creates silence, and disabling the right channel creates silence.
In my System>Preferences>Sound (or pavucontrol, or what-have-you), there are "Analog Stereo Input" and "Analog Stereo Duplex" options there, but no "Analog Mono Input" or "Analog Stereo Output + Analog Mono Input" options (the latter being ideal).
Something interesting, though, if I do this:

it works correctly and outputs on both channels. But if I do

then it's back to the same behavior. The VU meter on the second command shows the left channel going up and down as I make noise, but the right one always at zero.
The machine does have a crap internal mic built in to the screen bezel. If I do either of the above commands, they both work correctly. The stereo VU shows the same activity for both channels.
The machine is a Eee 1015PED, which has Intel integrated sound. Something probably insignificant is that the mic has a 1/4 inch mono plug, and to get it to plug into the Eee, I needed to get a 1/4 female to 1/8 male adapter. The mic's 1/4 plug is mono (duh) and therefore two-conductor, but the adapter I got is stereo, or three conductor (L, R, GND). I don't know if this is tripping something in hardware to tell it it's stereo or something.
I tried the mic on my desktop, which has a SB Audigy 4 (the non-pro flavor) and that has the "Analog Mono Input" function, so that works fine. Is there some way to turn this stereo input into mono input?
I installed Lucid. I used to have Ubuntu 9.10 and to connect my iPod to my laptop's speakers. There was an option in 9.10 in the Sound Options to change the Mic Input into a Line Input. But now unfortunately I can't find it in Lucid have only 2 audio ports in the laptop: Headphone port, Mic port.

I've read, the SCIM input program should start up automatically when loading a program, it doesn't. When I have it loaded I cannot seem to get the input working.
I'm running 10.10 on two different laptops at home, via an Apple Airport Express. I wanted to use audiopulse to stream my music, o I installed that, and the Airport express utility for windows using Wine.I got everything working swimmingly, then my internet input wouldn't work. I can, say, upload from Transmission, but not use browsers or download anything. In a stupid fit of panic, I uninstalled everything I had set up, to see if that would help, and reset all I could. Still nothing, and now my sound is gone.

I have a pair of interfaces bringing in traffic from multiple vlans each. I need to route or forward traffic to and output interface based on the physical interface and source IP address in the packet.I have multiple ip rules to send traffic to custom routing tables and each of those custom tables had a default route out the appropriate interface, but traffic isn't flowing. Afterwards I tried using iptables and put an ACCEPT any statement in every chain of every table. What am I missing, ebtables maybe??

But it requires user input, and what I want to do now is upload a specific file to a server, once I've finished working with it every day. It's the same file every day. II would like to be able to do this semi-automatically: I just give the command and it connects to the server and uploads the file. (I will probably want to encrypt the file before uploading it.)I don't know how I could use ftp without any user input: I want it to be automatic.

Is it feasible/desirable to set up a network of virtual machines to use as an environment to learn networking? My budget is non-existent so I was hoping to be able to get a basic understanding of the principles from installing a few desktops, a virtual gateway etc on VMware workstation on my laptop, and doing a lot of reading online.
Is this feasible, or will I just end up learning about virtual networks instead of real ones? Also how much power would be required, because my 3GB RAM lappy has just gone bang and all I have now is a (new) 1GB RAM lappy.
I have a desktop machine, with a DVD drive in it, mounted at /media/cdrom0I am trying to share this across a wireless network with two laptops, neither of them with CD drives in them. While I can see the cdrom drive across the network, whenever I try to open a file on it (typically something in VIDEO_TS), it doesn't allow me to access it. The error is "Error reading from file: Input/output error". If I try to open the DVD in the drive using movie player, I get the error "An error occurred. Could not read from resource."A DVD in the drive on the server works fine - it plays in movie player and in VLC. Thus far I have tried various different settings in /etc/exports on the server and /etc/fstab on the laptops. I have tried the fixes mentioned in this thread: ... namely, editing the 70-persistent-cd rules file (on the server and the client), and removing all links to block objects in /dev (on the server and the client), and even tried editing the /boot/grub/menu.lst on the server and the client, adding "all_generic_ide=1" in under # defoptions, and then running "sudo update-grub", as per the bug listed here:

It happens about 95% of the time, but occasionally, just occasionally, it works as it should and I can play a DVD across the network (which is what I am trying to do!) I would really appreciate any help anyone can offer in getting this one working. The machines are all on a private network, and all running 9.10 Karmic. View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently bought the D-Link DIR-655 and DWA-140 wireless setup just before converting completely to Linux from windows. I'm sure there are issues with the ralink rt2870 chipset. I did get this to work after a few days of trying various things, but I could not get Wireless N to work, it only operates in G mode. This seems to have something to do with needing to use AES for N-mode. My wireless setup will only work with Ubuntu if I have TKIP set. This of course requires my entire network to work at G speeds. Consequently I am returning my D-Link setup tomorrow, and am looking for the community opinion on what Router/adapter setup is truly out-of-the-box compatible with Ubuntu 10.04. This Router will need to be compatible with other windows based computers on the network running the DWA-140 USB adapters. (I have no PCI slots available).
