Ubuntu Networking :: Share Internet From Wifi To Ethernet?

I tryed to get network work like this share internet from wifi (wlan0) to ethernet (eth0).So the internet connection comes from the wifi and we share to other computer via ethernet[URL]But when I restarted my pc then it dont work and network says "wired network device not managed" How can I get it work aigan ?[URL]Now I have anohter problem when I connect autoeth then the wireless network dosent work anymore, I have to disconnect eth0 to have wirelles network working. how can I manage to get the bowh to work?

I am basically wanting to use my Ubuntu 10.10 computer as a router. Note: Before you say just get a router please note that I am poor/cheap. I have two ethernet connections and one wireless connection on my netbook. I want to share the internet connection that is going into one of the ethernet cards through the other ethernet card and the wireless card.
DSL-->1sr Eth --> 2nd Eth (currently works)
DSL-->1sr Eth --> Wireless Card (Adhoc) <--(connects with limited connectivity AKA no internet)
The 2nd Ethernet card already has working internet, but when I connect to the Wireless card (through an Adhoc network), it cannot get an IP (I believe).

After some fiddling around, I have come to the conclusion my current wifi access point hates my other computer's Broadcom chip or the drivers thereof. So, my current idea is as follows. I would like to use my netbook to connect to the wireless network, and then connect my other computer to it through ethernet. My netbook is dual boot XP and Ubuntu (think Ubuntu is a version behind) and I would be fine to set up this sharing in either and just leave it on as a repeater station. My other computer is dual boot XP and Fedora and I would prefer this work to allow me to have network in both. I have a straight-through cable and have verified that my network card supports the automatic crossing over behavior.

Just recently got a new rig, and was wondering, is there a way to share internet via a switch. I understand the problems with switches is that they dont assign IPs like routers do, but if my ubuntu machine worked like a router by assigning IPs, could it work? Current setup is as such. I have one ubuntu machine with 1 ethernet port (this shall be the main preferably) 1 mac with a single ethernet port 1 modem with a single ethernet port that cannot assign more than one IP address. And a 5 port switch. Would it be possible to place the modem into the switch, get the ubuntu machine to receive the IP address, and broadcast all other address' to everyone else via the same switch and ethernet cable?

My computer running Ubuntu 10.04 (latest) is connected to the internet via an ethernet cable. I would like other devices to connect to the internet by sharing its connection via wifi. Is there a guide to do this? I haven't been able to find one which works out of the box.

I want to share my internet connexion via ad-hoc WiFi. If it's unsecured, it works fine, but when I use WPA encryption, it doesn't work anymore! I can connect from my iPod touch, but no internet. I've been reading around, but not had much success at all in trying to share the internet connection from my laptop to my phone.all the articles i read refer to earlier versions of Ubuntu and the packages they mention have become obsolete, according to the apt-get tool.im not that new to Linux, but my networking probably isn't up to scratch.if anyone could help me, that would be great, im using Ubuntu 10.04 at the time of writing.

I have an old PowerBook G4 that I would like to use as a 'dummy' computer for learning wireless penetration (WEP/WPA attacks) more effectively. I had been using a wireless router, but I gave it away I can use Mac OS X to share an ethernet connection over wifi, but this is _very_ un-configurable. You get two options only, WEP and a key-length. So, I would like to install someway to make this wireless connection more configurable.

My WiFi can connect to internet without any problem, until I plug my ethernet cable ...then I lose internet.
So the question is : how do I configure my ip/dns and stuff to still have internet when I'm plugged by cable at the same time! it was working on windows ;-)

Is this possible? and if so how? Basically the PC in my sig connects to the Internet through a Wireless Adapter..etc. I have another tower PC, running Ubuntu that sits next to it - doing nothing and has no internet connection. (My son uses it to play tux paint etc). I would love to be able to connect the Tower PC to My PC via an ethernet cable? and share the Wireless Connection on my PC?

There is a new feature in Windows 7 that make u able to create a virtual WiFi and share ur internet access with many others.
I know there is ad-hoc but sometimes it has problems, for example I couldn't connect to my friend's ad-hoc network (he is using Windows 7) but I _could_ connect to the virtual WiFi he created, it appeared just like any other wireless network unlike ad-hoc
so is there any way to create a virtual WiFi and not ad-hoc in Linux?

I have an Asrock A330GC, with onboard ethernet, and an Engenius PCI card for wifi.I installed ubuntu server 9.10 no problems, and it picked up my ethernet in the installation with no difficulties.I couldn't get 9.10 to do what i wanted, so I tried installing 8.4 instead. This however didn't pick up any of the drivers, so i couldn't get online.So i reinstalled 9.10, only to find that no couldn't find network in the installation.Absolutely NOTHING has changed, the ethernet cable still plugged in, and if i plug same cable into my laptop, it works fine.Any ideas people?ifconfig doesn't mention any eth0, just lo, with an ip of 127.0.0.1 and amask of 255.0.0.0 which i'm fairly certain means its dead

I'm trying to share my ethernet via my wireless card. It doesn't work. Here is some info:

I've tried everything listed in these forums but every time I run
sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode master
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device wlan0 ; Invalid argument.
I tried the STA drivers and get the same thing except the kernel module loaded is wl instead of b43. Is it even possible to set this card to master mode? I can't find jack on the net.

I just installed UNR from a usb drive on my hp mini 1030nr. I followed a guide and got the drivers installed from the drive, but they would not activate in the restricted hardware dialog. I tried to run update over wired, but I couldn't get ethernet working. ifconfig -a anly shows lo, eth0 doesn't seem to exist. how to get wifi working?

I have been trying to get my laptop to share its wireless connection to my older, wireless-less, computers through its ethernet port. So far, I have not been able to make it work. As far as I know, what I am trying to do is called network bridging. The method I have been trying so far is to run these commands as root:

I often use an Ethernet cable to connect my computer to another computer for various purposes. But when I do that, I cannot use the internet even though I'm still connected to a WiFi access point. I'm presuming that's because openSUSE is trying to reach the internet through the Ethernet cable, which has precedence over WiFi.Is there a way to enable internet usage via WiFi while I'm connected to another computer over Ethernet?

Running Ubuntu 10.04. Networking won't work at all. Used to work flawlessly. Problem is not hardware, because booting windows (vista) on the same machine I can still use networking.
Little story: I Was going into a short trip, then I put my computer to sleep (as usual). Trip took longer than expected and, when I came back, the notebook battery was dead. Charged it, booted the notebook (Dell Inspiron 1525) and now its network won't work at all. After reboot it even ran a filesystem scan, but problem wasn't fixed. The icon on 'taskbar' only says "networking disabled". The ethernet lights won't even light up when I connect a ethernet cable and it won't see any wifi networks. I've tried to fiddle with that little switch which would turn the wifi on and off, but all it seems to do is turn the Bluetooth on and off, as shown by the little Bluetooth icon on 'taskbar' (I've not tested bluetooth, though). I've also tried to plug a external wifi dongle but ubuntu won't even try to install it.
what's happening or what could I do to get my network working? Is there some 'magic' I can type into a terminal window to make this work?

When I select the wifi icon on the panel, it just shows "No network devices available". I know my network can be found when I search with my iPhone, so I know there are networks to connect to. So, I checked the drivers, and it informs me that the B43 and STA drivers are not activated. So thats not a big deal, I guess, but when I use my ethernet cord, my laptop doesn't recognize/acknowledge (I'm not sure what the right term would be)it. I'm fairly sure I can't activate these drivers without an internet connection because when I do try, a message pops up saying "failed to fetch" with some long link.
My only guess is that it could be a hardware problem, but I really have no idea. I guess the ethernet problem is my only real problem. Because after I establish and internet connection the the rest is easy to fix.I'm sure its obvious, but I'll go ahead say that I'm a novice ubuntu user. I've only been working with it for about a week, but I'm learning alot.

I have a brand new ASUS EEE PC 900HA with Ubuntu 9.10 installed on it. The wireless hasn't worked yet but the ethernet is fine. I've been browsing the forums for hours to find a fix but now I've installed/queried/removed so many things I'm totally confused.

I have a laptop with Ubuntu 9.10. And I want to connect it to Internet using wifi. Also I have desktop with Ubuntu 9.10 (another desktop with Win XP, but for some day it will run under Ubuntu too ). I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 running Jaunty Jackalope. I have a good working wireless connection.
My daughter has a lot of iPod tunes stored on an old white chiclet Macintosh, which she needs to download to her iPod. Because the iPod is "corrupt" (meaning it was last connected to Windows!), we need to connect to internet.
Simplest way to do that would SEEM to be to plug an Ethernet cord between the two machines and let her Mac access internet via this Dell.
My experience with ethernet is, either it works out of the box, or it doesn't. If it doesn't, I have no idea how to make the connection work.
What do I have to do on BOTH the Jaunty and OSX sides to make the connection?

I have a server with two ethernet ports. I configured eth0 to be static, set at 10.1.10.148. I plugged in another router into the other ethernet port in order to configure that router. I configured eth1 to use dhcp. Using /etc/network/interfaces rather than gnome network manager. When I did this, I lost internet connectivity (internet routes through eth0 of course)
- Why did I lose internet connectivity?
In order to recover internet activity, I had to disconnect the new router on eth1 of course, and do sudo ifdown eth1. That wasn't enough however. After rebooting numerous times and pulling out my hair, I finally tried configuring eth0 as dhcp, rather than static, and this fixed the problem.
- Why didn't sudo ifdown eth1 solve the problem? What information was saved between reboots that somehow remembered that I plugged in the new router? Because my thinking was if /etc/network/interfaces was identical, and the network topology was identical, after a reboot everything should be restored, but it wasn't.
