Ubuntu Networking :: Restricted Drivers Not Showing?

Mar 1, 2010

I reinstalled ubuntu and now there isn't a box that pops up saying "restricted drivers" where my wireless would pop up saying something like Broadcom STA wireless driver. and Broadcom BZ3 wireless driver (or something like that) I would then click STA wireless driver and click "activate" then it would make my wireless card work.

Why isnt this box popping up? how do I get to it?

Ubuntu :: 8.10 Restricted Accelerated Drivers Not Enabling?

Feb 20, 2010

due to a crash on window's part my computer crashed and I decided to install the latest version of Ubuntu. (9.10) However as it happened, it was actually incompatible with the usb on my computer an Acer AM5641 desktop. So I opted for 8.10 which works like a charm except for the fact that the restricted drivers for my graphics card (an Nvidia 7900 GS that I installed) don't work. After clicking "enable driver" everything appears to go as normal. Except for the fact that when I restart it, it automatically goes into safe mode, and i can't save it at a higher resolution than 800x600.

Ubuntu :: Option For OpenGl To Use Restricted Drivers?

May 18, 2010

I have been using EnvyNG for my nvidia 9600 for a few ubuntu versions now, but cant find envy after doing a clean install of lucid. When I installed lucid and added the sources, Envy is not there. Does this mean envy no longer used, or is not updated for lucid?

Is my only option for OpenGl to use restricted drivers? I think the restricted drivers are causing me some grief with compiz & emerald. I frequently lose emerald, & have to reload the windows manager. I rarely saw these issues with karmic or jaunty.

Ubuntu :: Blank Screen After Install Restricted Drivers

Aug 9, 2011

I just reseantly got an Asus Essentio CM1730-05 desktop and I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on it with Wubi. After doing so, I installed the restricted driver for my onboard ATI Radeon 3000 graphics. After doing so I get to a blank screen right after the splash screen. Also I think it is frozen because I don't here the Log in music and I have to hard reboot instead of just hitting the power button. If you need to know more about my hardware just ask. Also I have tried two different monitors.

A Dell M991 and my HDTV. I have used the following hook ups to the HDTV-DVI to HDMI and HDMI to HDMI. The Dell M991 is like any older monitor. Just that one VGA hook up. I noticed there is an Asus section so I hope that this is still the right spot. I have tried the following. Replace quiet splash with nomodeset and also i915.modeset=1. I have yet to try i915.modeset=0.

Ubuntu :: Run Compiz In LiveUSB W/ Nvidia Or ATI Cards W/o Restricted Drivers?

Even if I have persistence enabled, downloading and installing the drivers does not carry over to the next session and it again throws up a "restricted drivers available/needed" prompt.P.S The purpose of doing this is for demos. Ubuntu Installation :: Proprietary NVIDIA Graphics Drivers From Restricted Repo?

Jul 17, 2011

As this question pops up quite often on IRC and, as a quick search told me, on this board as well, I decided to put together some directions that, with some or the other variation, also apply to other Linux distributions and have never failed me. The following is confirmed to work for Kubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal 64bit with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 and on Kubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal 32bit with a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900XT graphics card.

This HowTo will describe how to install the proprietary NVIDIA graphics card drivers using exclusively the command line. I strongly suggest you try this method for a fresh install of graphics drivers before trying any other method, especially a GUI-driven one (I never used a GUI for package management on a Debian-ish system, but I hear that the Ubuntu Software Center supposedly has a way of installing proprietary graphics drivers).

The restricted packages repository should be enabled by default. To the more experienced users: This HowTo uses apt-get for demonstrating the install process. If you prefer using aptitude, feel free to replace the commands accordingly. First steps. As well be doing everything on the command line, first open a terminal application from your desktop environments menu or from a shortcut icon on your panel, if you have one. You should be greeted by a prompt that looks like this:

[Code]...

Red Hat / Fedora :: Terminal At Boot Time / Opted To Install ATI Drivers When Alerted To Restricted Ones By Pop-up?

Jan 1, 2010

I recently installed Fedora - it seems like a nice interface and I want to experience the system before deciding whether I want to keep using it over my ever reliable Crunchbang, which gives me absolutely no grief whatsoever. However, it is nice to use an attractive interface now and again. So, here's my problem - I opted to install the ATI drivers when alerted to the restricted ones by the pop-up. I took note of how to disable them again if there were problems with the display after reboot. There was a problem with the display (black screen) and I can't get the command entered at boot time because the only command line environment I have an option for is GRUB. Grib does not recognize any of the 'aticonfig --initial -f' command that ATI instructed me to use to get things back to normal. How do I do this? I prsume others have been there and will know how to guide me. - getting the graphical interface to display better graphics. I want the eye candy that desktop effects give. I am hoping Fedora won't let me down here because I could simply continue to use Ubuntu which only gives one problem with the window resize delay.

Ubuntu Networking :: Traffic Restricted On Certain Machines?

Jan 24, 2011

first, here is our setup:

Linksys Router with firewall
1 Linux Server -- Running Dapper
Multiple Linux ThinClients running off the linux server
Multiple Freestanding Linux Machines -- Running ubuntu variants
Multiple Freestanding Windows Machines -- Running windows variants

The issue is that certain websites will not load on the freestanding linux machines, but they will load on our linux server and all the windows machines. examples: [URL].. These sites will start to load, but they never really finish and just seem to time out. I have tried changing the dns on the freestanding linux laptops to use 208.67.220.220 and this does not solve the problem.

I have checked the firewall rules and they seem pretty standard.when the linux machines are used on other networks, these websites work, so the problem seems to be related to this particular network.

When I do (freestanding linux):
Code:
traceroute acer.com -I
The trace times out at 30 hops
When I do (linux server):
Code:
traceroute acer.com -I
The trace reaches the destination at 19 hops

Both of the traceroute requests start by going through the router. So the big issue is that websites will load on our linux server and all our windows machines, but not on freestanding linux clients.

The odd part is I am able to ping eth0 from off the LAN and get a reply.

Ubuntu :: Wireless Drivers Not Showing Up In Installed Version Only In "live"

Mar 22, 2010

I've got something that's really confusing me. I'm a total noob, but I read a fair bit about Ubuntu before I overwrote my windows. To make sure it worked, I used the Live run option, and it worked fine on my system. Everything worked, it notified me, however, to use the internet I'd have to download proprietary drivers (Broadcom B43 wireless driver and Broadcom STA wireless driver). I did it and my internet started working. So everything was fine and I rebooted and actually installed the OS. Once installed, it would not get internet, nor prompt for drivers being required. So I checked my manual and tried to do it manually: System / Administration / Hardware Drivers. It searched, and said there were no proprietary drivers. I thought that this was weird, so I rebooted my system "Live" again (even though it was already installed): and the Drivers were there again! They only show up in live, I can't get internet in the installed version. What's going on? How do I get these two drivers to show up on my actual installed copy, not my lie copy?

Fedora Networking :: Trying To Access Restricted Windows Share From Fedora

Dec 27, 2009

I've lasted a lot longer than usual before resorting to asking around, but I've finally gone delightfully mad. I've been trying to access shares based on Windows 7 Ultimate with limited user access on said shares. I've managed to get into my XP machine, another mate's Vista machine and various Linux boxes with no issues, but that's only for shares that are accessible by everyone. The moment I try to get into a share that requires user credentials, I get "Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED".If I try to access restricted shares (be it machine or folder) through Nautilus, I will get a user logon prompt, but it fails. Using smbclient results in just as little success, and now I'm munching through O'Reiley's Samba manual from '99, after realising that I need to basically learn Samba in its entirety to have a hope in hell at getting this to work. The trouble is though, every HOWTO and relevant forum post I get my hands on all seem to concentrate more on the server side of things, and usually servering from a linux box, not the other way around as I'm trying to.

The above Windows 7 machine won't even allow me to view its share contents, whereas the XP machine previously will allow me to browse, but won't allow me to access folders with restricted access. I'm pretty sure there aren't any major issues with the way the Windows 7 machine is setup, as it can be accessed with logon from my Xbox, Ubuntu machine, XP and Vista, with only Fedora having problems getting in as it constantly fails logon. What I'm trying to establish is, if Ubuntu can get in, is there something in my Fedora samba config I'm missing that's preventing me access? My thanks in advance to those of you who've been able to put up with me rambling.

Ubuntu Networking :: Connections Not Showing Up?

Jan 12, 2010

When I click on the network manager icon next to the date in the upper right corner of my screen, my network connections do not show up. I have added two DSL connections on my laptop (username & password) but it doesn't show up. Everyday I need to use

Code:
sudo pppoeconf
if I wish to connect to the internet.

Both these connections are added in the same way on my Desktop Computer and it shows up on the network manager. One of them is even the default which connects automatically on startup.

Because it's not working I assume network manager is not compatible with my laptop. Are there patches to install or other programs that can easily manage my internet connection?

I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 on a not-so-new laptop.
