I attempted to install restricted drivers using jockey-gtk, was told to reboot and drivers would take effect. Rebooted and got no graphics, after some finagling I was able to delete xorg.conf and I now have horrific looking graphics. Defaulted to current version or 195 (which is also the only option I see in the jockey tool, however in synaptic/apt I see I can install other versions.

As this question pops up quite often on IRC and, as a quick search told me, on this board as well, I decided to put together some directions that, with some or the other variation, also apply to other Linux distributions and have never failed me. The following is confirmed to work for Kubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal 64bit with a NVIDIA GeForce GT 240 and on Kubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal 32bit with a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900XT graphics card.
This HowTo will describe how to install the proprietary NVIDIA graphics card drivers using exclusively the command line. I strongly suggest you try this method for a fresh install of graphics drivers before trying any other method, especially a GUI-driven one (I never used a GUI for package management on a Debian-ish system, but I hear that the Ubuntu Software Center supposedly has a way of installing proprietary graphics drivers).
The restricted packages repository should be enabled by default. To the more experienced users: This HowTo uses apt-get for demonstrating the install process. I did not find my graphics card in the HCL/Nvidia video cards thread. I looked in YaST for drivers & found none. My desktop pc freezes after the system loads so I cannot use my system. I understand about the level '3' boot option for tty input. How would I download/run the nvidia installer from tty?

My son and I are having trouble getting the graphics card to work properly in his computer. The resolution is good, but the graphics card is not fully functioning. He works on animation and graphics of several kinds, and the graphics programs cannot run without a fully functioning graphics card.
The computer will not run Blender and other graphics programs. Nor will it even allow for the "normal" "Visual Effects" in the "Appearance Preferences." (It comes up with the error: "Desktop effects could not be enabled," after it tries to find the driver.) The system is:
Graphics Card: nVidia G92, GeForce 8800 GT
System: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, 2.6.31-17-generic, 4.4.1 (x86_64-linux-gnu)

We know the graphics card works because it works in Windows. (We set up the computer to boot off of either of two hard drives -- either in Windows XP or Ubuntu 9.10, karmic.) Neither my son nor I understand much of the terminology on your forums, although I have been using Ubuntu for some years and have read quite a bit. (I also have the "Beginning Ubuntu Linux" book.) I love Ubuntu, but sometimes I just cannot figure out how to get some things running. We have tried many different ways of installing the drivers and setting up the xorg.conf file. We have followed the instructions on this and other threads. We also installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-64-190.53-pkg2.run, as well as 173 and 185. The screen will only work at a proper resolution when we set the "Driver" to "nv" in the xorg.conf file. The screen goes completely blank and dead if we set the "Driver" to "nvidia." Then we need to reboot in safe mode and edit the xorg.conf file with VIM.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with a new GeForce 8600GT graphics card. I just installed the card into my Dell Optiplex 745. When I boot the PC I have no image until the Ubuntu logon box comes up. No bios info, no boot menu, no grub menu, nothing until the Ubuntu login. Once I get to the logon prompt everything seems fine except when I use CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to a console. Then I get nothing but a blank screen. When I press CTRL+ALT+F7 my desktop loads fine and all is OK again. I had a problem trying to get the nVidia drivers installed because I didn't have a usable console. I had to use SSH to install the drivers. I'm using this card with an HP 1755 flat panel that's about 5 years old and a Dell Optiplex 745 with Intel Dual-Core CPU.

Researching how to resolve that error and I can't find anything relevant to openSUSE 11, closest version being openSUSE 9.Lastly, I've tried this SDB:NVIDIA drivers and for some reason it does not generate the xorg.conf file. At least that's what I am concluding. I go through the steps, reboot the system and boot only to a command prompt. Navigating to /etc/X11/ there is no xorg.conf and I have to copy xorg.conf.install to xorg.conf to get back into the Desktop.

After the upgrade I can use only nv and vesa in the Gentoo x86_64 and in the Fedora 13 x86_64. When I try to install Geforce 8800 GT everything becomes good with free nvidia-drivers and with proprietary ones in both distributions. use this videocard with the kernel 2.6.33(34)* and nvidia-drivers 196.* ?

For the record, I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 So I built my new box, and my video card is a Gigabyte Nvidia GeForce 9600GT (GIGABYTE GV-N96TZL-1GI). I go to System > Administration > Hardware Drivers to install the drivers so I can use those fancy 3D effects. It tells me I need to restart, so I do.
When it comes up though, I get an error message about running in low graphics mode, the top 5th of my screen is blacked out, and the screen has been shifted so that the left boundary is in the middle, and the right boundary goes off the screen and back to the left side. It goes back to working fine (but without the fancy 3D effects) when I remove the drivers. Both drivers in the hardware drivers (185 and 173) have this problem. I'd post log files and such, but I'm at work right now.
Would a Nvidia Geforce 4 graphics card be supported for openSUSE? My friend gave me it, and said that it was. But he doesnt use Linux.

Now that I have, I can do stuff, but I am trying to run some games in W.I.N.E. and it just won't run. I can't activate desktop-effects either. And to be honest, I can't find any information on the NVIDIA GeForce 8200M, I can only find info and support for 8200 and the 8200M G. otherwise I'll just have to reinstall.... And I just installed 10.04 yesterday.

When I execute the shell script it says it cannot find my kernel headers, yet I can verify that my /usr/include/linux/kernel.h does exist. I have selinux on, but just installed os with it on, so contexts are fresh. Checked them as well. After doing some research I found something out. When I run a 'uname -a' I get this.

I see that the error in the nvidia shell script can't locate the header files for the RUNNING kernel version which makes sense. Why would yum install that version instead of the one in 'uname -a'? Or am I misunderstanding something?
First off, I'll come clean and admit that I am still relatively green to Linux, but I'm not afraid to tackle the complex. I have a few stroke-inducing issues that I haven't been able to resolve as a usually do by eye-grepping Google and the various forums. Of course, I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity - which is fairly new and undiscovered country.
I've got this no-name brand, sample laptop from a manufacturing partner of ours out of Shenzhen China. It's rocking a Core i3 M350 with an nVidia GT 330M (discreet-ish?)& apparently some flavor of Intel integrated graphics.
Now, there are so many variables at play, I'm not quite sure where to begin - so please bear with this post a bit longer as I unravel the details. Loading the nVidia drivers (both proprietary and the experimental open varieties) results in Unity no longer working and dumping me back to the classic Ubuntu desktop. I believe it has something to do with the fact that I have no ability to disable the integrated graphics through the BIOS and Ubuntu has set its hopes and dreams upon using Intel graphics for the rest of all time.
That said, running without the nVidia graphics drivers, I am able to use Unity and it runs pretty well.The only caveat being that on occasion (read: intermittently), when the laptop wakes up from suspend/hibernate mode, playing Flash video in full screen gets choppy (stutters). Restarting Ubuntu resolves the issue. I suppose I should verify that I am using Firefox 4.
In addition, there are times that the WiFi adapter will not wake, and using the keyboard function key to power cycle it ceases to function. A complete shutdown is required to address this one. i.e. Restarting and warm-booting does not fix it.
Did I mention Skype is a terd? I don't actually expect a fix for this pile of hot mess - just thought it might make someone laugh. If there is anyone here that could lend me a hand with any or all of these issues, not only will you have the satisfaction of knowing that you are one bad Mambajamba (TM), but I'll buy you a drink or something via Dwolla or bitcoin.
im having an intel E2180 processor with 2 gb RAM and an nvidia 8400gs graphics card. Lately i installed Fedora 12 on my system and found that with default settings the desktop 3d is not working. so installed the kmod-nvidia using yum after following the instruction.i also edited the grub.conf file to rdblacklist=nouveau to blacklist nouveau drivers.
Then once i rebooted i found two kernels in grub ie the old one and the one with PAE extension. when i booted into the old kernel its Xwindows failed to load showing a black screen and when i tried the new PAE kernel it booted in 640 x 480 resolution. {earlier i was getting a resolution of 1440 x 900 on my 17" widescreen monitor}. it also showed that the nvidia drivers failed to load. I also read in some forums that the PAE kernels are for systems with 4gb+ of ram. So i thought it better to reinstall the whole thing.
then i reinstalled the whole operating system using my fedora 12 dvd and performed the 'upgrade or replace the existing linux distribution'. interestingly now my older kernel has disappeared and the PAE kernel is the one that is remaining.

Sometimes, in Firefox, after looking a video and closing the corresponding tab, a still picture of the video appears in other tabs, even in some other applications than Firefox (e.g. Terminal). I've installed the nvidia drivers on Fedora 14. They seem to work properly.

I own an ASUS N61JV-X2 notebook PC that has an Intel HD IGP, nVIDIA GeForce GT 325M GPU, and nVIDIA Optimus technology. I am running OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME. I used to be a former Ubuntu user. I used Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat 64 bit. In Ubuntu, it was not recommended that I install the proprietary nVIDIA binary drivers because it would cause me to log into a TTY console upon reboot.
nVIDIA states that they have no plans to support Optimus technology in Linux at any time. Would it be recommended that I install the proprietary nVIDIA binary drivers in OpenSUSE 11.4 64 bit with GNOME? Will I get the same problem as in Ubuntu? How do I do this?
due to a crash on window's part my computer crashed and I decided to install the latest version of Ubuntu. (9.10) However as it happened, it was actually incompatible with the usb on my computer an Acer AM5641 desktop. So I opted for 8.10 which works like a charm except for the fact that the restricted drivers for my graphics card (an Nvidia 7900 GS that I installed) don't work. After clicking "enable driver" everything appears to go as normal. Except for the fact that when I restart it, it automatically goes into safe mode, and i can't save it at a higher resolution than 800x600.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI reinstalled ubuntu and now there isn't a box that pops up saying "restricted drivers" where my wireless would pop up saying something like Broadcom STA wireless driver. and Broadcom BZ3 wireless driver (or something like that) I would then click STA wireless driver and click "activate" then it would make my wireless card work.
Why isnt this box popping up? how do I get to it?
I have been using EnvyNG for my nvidia 9600 for a few ubuntu versions now, but cant find envy after doing a clean install of lucid. When I installed lucid and added the sources, Envy is not there. Does this mean envy no longer used, or is not updated for lucid?
Is my only option for OpenGl to use restricted drivers? I think the restricted drivers are causing me some grief with compiz & emerald. I frequently lose emerald, & have to reload the windows manager. I rarely saw these issues with karmic or jaunty.
