Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Keeps Dropping The Wifi Signal?

Dec 12, 2010

I've got a Belkin F5D8055 v1 wifi usb adapter. I use the rt2800usb driver for it. Strangely it uses only 54 Mbit/s instead of 300 Mbit/s. I thought it was ok, since I use the wifi only for accessing the internet. However, the network manager keeps dropping the signal, and I can't understand why. I'm close enough to the router.

iwconfig:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:"MyHomeRouter"
Mode:Managed Frequency:2.447 GHz Access Point: 00:22:2D:06:2C:50

Ubuntu Networking :: WiFi Dropping And Dropping Speed

Feb 25, 2010

As soon as i'm starting to copy a large file enough file (>700Mb) to my ubuntu box (connected to an Asus router via wifi) from a Windows 7 client (connected to router via ethernet cable) i get a dramatic drop in speed. upload starts at 1,0Mb/sec with a ping to ubuntu box at <1ms, and in 2 minutes it drops to 200kb/sec with a ping of over 1000ms! The ping increases with every second in a linear progression.

To exlude router as a possible problem copying to a windows 7 notebook connected to router via wifi results in an average of 2,7Mb/sec with an average ping of 150ms.

Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Connect To Wifi Using Any Network Manager

Dec 26, 2010

i was fed up after i can't connect to wifi using ubuntu. the problem happened after my router is being replaced to a new one because the old one got struck by lightning. good thing i dual-boot my laptop so i can access the internet using Windows 7 now.

i use the default network manager to connect to wifi before, but it all seem to be failed after the replacement of router. i also used Wicd but it failed to connect either. it says in the notification "disconnected: bad password" but the password was right. my wifi used WEP password with open authentication.

i even remove the WEP password and try to connect, but it failed. all i can do is to boot in windows 7 and surf internet there. what could cause this problem? is it the router, the telephone line? i can set the router settings if i want, but i don't know what causes the problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: Get The Asus N13 WiFi To Be Controlled By The Network Manager App

Mar 11, 2011

I have eventually (a week's work) got my Ubuntu 10.04 to recognise my Asus N13 WiFi dongle (had to compile the source from Ralink with the "y" against the two things it tells you to if you want network manager to work (source that came with dongle wouldn't compile) and then set up rules (for some reason the driver - rt2870sta - wouldn't recognise the dongle until the rule about the vendor and product ID was in place; and the drivers that come with Ubuntu wouldn't recognise it even with the rule in place)).

Big thank you to chilli555 for all of the posts that got me this far.I would like to use the Network Manager app that comes with Ubuntu, to control the dongle. At the moment it will aknowledge when the driver has been loaded (have to do a modprobe), but does not "see" any of the many WiFi routers around my house, so I can't click on one to select one.

My only guess on this is that, to get the dongle to work I copied the config file that is part of the driver source files into /etc/Wireless/RT2870, and this is getting in the way. However, I have tried removing it and the network manager still doesn't work. Or is it because the network manager needs the dongle to be called "wlan0" and it's called "ra0"? If so, can you aliase this?

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 Lab Computers Dropping WiFi Connections

Jan 5, 2011

Our school has a small 3-computer lab in the preschool department where the kids come in and simply use Firefox to access some educational websites. Due to logistics in the building they're in we had to go with a wireless solution in the following setup:

- Apple Airport Extreme WAP
- 3 HP DX2200 desktops running Ubuntu 10.10
- 3 Trendnet TEW-664UB USB wifi chips

All was running great until we got the computers installed on site and now they are constantly dropping the wifi connection if they are even able to connect at all (which is highly hit or miss).

10.10 picked up the USB wifi card as soon as we plugged them in and showed the available networks, but actually obtaining and keeping connections is a nightmare at the point. The computers are in very close proximity to each other (only about 2-3 feet between computers) and the WAP is in the next room (other computers and mobile devices are able to connect to the WAP with full signal from the same room/location). Thats about all the detail I have off the top of my head, could this be an interference issue with the wifi cards or does this sound like an Ubunutu issue? Again we have had multiple other devices in that room all able to connect seamlessly.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.10 - In Network Manager Can View Wifi Networks Fine But Cannot Connect

Apr 28, 2011

I have been an Ubuntu user for a year or so. My level is still ultra n00b but I am trying. Whenever I update Ubuntu there is always a WiFi problem, always. So now I am having problems getting wifi to work in 10.10. In Network Manager I can view wifi networks fine but I cannot connect. I tried with wicd also but I got as far as "getting ip" and then it would hang up.

Code:

Code:

I am not sure what driver I am using as I don't know how to exactly ID my driver. I know there is a way to ID the driver using airodump-ng but I have yet to find it.
I have a feeling this is a driver issue as one time I was able to establish a connection that then dropped a few minutes later. I have a feeling I should be disabling/removing the current driver and replacing it with ipw3945 or possibly a driver ndiswrapped? The problem is I cannot figure out how to remove the current driver.

I was going to switch back to 9.04 but I thought I would try to manually figure this one out instead of taking the easy way.

Ubuntu Networking :: EeePC 901 Dropping WiFi Connection - Need New Driver?

Jan 5, 2010

Here's the situation: I've got an eee pc 901 running Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix. I'm using it to connect to a WPA-encrypted wireless network on a WRT54GL running dd-wrt. It mostly connects and works ok, but sometimes it just stops working for no apparent reason (the netbook still shows itself as connected), but you can't get anywhere until you manually disconnect and reconnect. Other times, it will drop the connection, and then quickly reconnect (or sometimes not). Obviously, this behavior is pretty irritating. At first I thought the problem was with the router, but I checked the logs there and they all seem fine, and other computers on the same router don't have this problem. Looking at "dmesg | tail" on my netbook, I see a lot of instances of the following error, which I'm thinking is probably the problem:

Code:
[11137.762233] ERROR!!! RTMPCancelTimer failed, Timer hasn't been initialize!
[11142.872797] ===>rt_ioctl_giwscan. 4(4) BSS returned, data->length = 440

[11163.952056] ERROR!!! RTMPCancelTimer failed, Timer hasn't been initialize!

I searched for that error message and I found this Ubuntu bug report: [URL] that describes symptoms that match mine. In that report, a poster mentions that he compiled and installed a new version of the wireless driver from the Ralink website, and it fixed his problem. Do you think installing a new driver would be good? Or has that updated driver already been added to the kernel since that bug report was filed? I've never compiled a kernel module before.

One other thing, I also see repeated instances of these lines (or similar ones) in dmesg, which look like they could be related.
Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Signal Very Low

Jan 15, 2010

I was running windows vista 32 bit (NOW UBUNTU 9.10) on my custom built pc with a TP-LINK TL-WN353GD wireless pci card, before on vista my wifi signal strength would be in the low 70% range with a speed of 54 Mbps from a access point roughly 250 yards away, now with ubuntu 9.10 signal strength in the 15-20% range with a speed of 1 Mbps. My question is, what is the best way to overcome this wifi signal strength and speed problem, it is a noticable performance disadvatange easily seen on a website like ..... where as before videos would play 95% of the time without having to stop and catch up, would a different wireless pci card be a better choice than what I have, or is the problem in the software as in a driver incompatability or lack of correct driver, not sure how to remedy the problem.

Ubuntu Networking :: No Wifi Signal Found

Dec 7, 2010

I just installed 10.10 on a Dell Inspiron 1300. The wired connection(eth0) works fine but I get no wireless signal when I unplug and try to connect to my network/internet. It shows that wlan0 does exist but it gets no signal. I've used the rfkill to make sure that it wasn't blocked and everything seems to be ok, except I get no wireless signal.

I uninstalled Network Manager and installed Wcid and it found nothing. I even tried installing several signal scanners I found in the package manager. I've removed, updated and reinstalled the broadcom drivers. I still get nothing. The wireless signal from my router is nonexistent according to Ubuntu.

The wireless works fine when I put my windows XP HD in and it also works fine when I put my Mepix or PCLinux OS HDs in the laptop. So I know that the wireless card is not busted.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wifi Card Recognized No Signal

I have discovered the world of freewares not long ago and it surprised me! To go a bit further, I have installed Lubuntu 10.4 LTS on an old laptop: HP Pavilion zv5326 with 256 Mo RAM.

Everything works fine except the wifi.

iwconfig returns for wlan0:
IEEE 802.11b ESSID:"Livebox-afe5"
Mode: Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=0 dBm
Retry Long Limit:7 RTS thrff Fragment thrff
Power Managementff

Ifconfig returns nothing for wlan0

From what I understand, my wifi card is recognized so I do not need to install a driver with ndiswrapper, right?

What should I do then? Is there a solution at all?

(Livebox-afe5 is the wifi connection I use with my other laptop.)

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Connections Keep Dropping?

Jan 30, 2010

Here is the layout of my network:My cable modem plugs into eth0 on my ubuntu server which acts as a firewall (shorewall) and dhcp server to my lan. A dd-wrt access point is plugged into eth1 and then a bridge connecting my xbox360 and another bridge connecting a desktop computer.Everything works pretty well, except a few times a day, my network will just shut down. The wireless on my macbook and my wife's laptop will just shut down, and if my xbox is running, it will lose connectivity. It will be down for maybe a minute or two, and then come back up like nothing ever happened.I never had this problem when I had just a dd-wrt router running everything instead of my server. When I ssh into my server afterwards and run dmesg, this is what I will get:

Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: 9.10 Dropping Network Connection Randomly?

Feb 20, 2010

I have a windows installation (partition) but have installed into freespace on the same drive using the auto-partition manager, etc, and everything is fine. I got my network going fairly easily by going Preferences > Wireless and inputting SSID and WPA encryption key (PSK). My router issues an WLAN IP, I can get on the net, I can see my other Windows PCs on the network, I can reach my router, and all is good.So after several hours of mooching about and looking at things, I have updated all the Linux packages via Synaptics (following a prompt to update everything) including GRUB. My dual boot now shows two versions of the OS:

GRUB 1.7~Beta4
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19 - generic (I am booting this one)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14 - generic

I also set up my HP F4580 printer over wifi on the network though with slightly incorrect drivers (for the F4400 series as this was recommended at the closest match). It works, and I can print a test page no problem. The only thing is that now (since doing all that) Ubuntu seems to periodically drop my connection to the network and then request the network PSK again, but when I enter it, it spends time trying to renegotiate but fails, and then re-requests the PSK, over and over and it never reconnects. I have to reboot and then I can connect again (automatically), until it drops at some random point (like 5 or 10 mins later)

Ubuntu :: Network Manager Applet - Wifi/mobile Controls Disappear And Reappear

May 7, 2010

I upgraded from 9.0X to 10.04 on my Sony Vaio VGN-TZ398U which has an internal Sprint mobile broadband card. The card operates properly along with the wireless. The problem that I am having since upgrading is that the Network Manager Applet icon that looks like a cell phone bar display does not show in the notification area at all unless there is a known wireless (wifi) network nearby.

Clarification: If I am in my car, the icon does not show which then makes it impossible to connect using the mobile broadband functions of the Network Manager Applet ( version 0.8 ). If I am in my office with a known wireless network, the icon shows and then I can switch to the mobile card.

I have tried removing the notification area from the panel and adding it again. I have done the same with the indicator applet. Neither has solved this problem.
