I see the Wifi Signal Strength icon on the top bar, but where's the label that shows the signal strength percentage? Is there a way to re-enable the label or did Canonical deemed it to be unnecessary?

On the same laptop in the same location, I get only 2 bars (low) wifi signal strength when I'm in Ubuntu 9.04 I'm using the wifi transceiver built into my hp Anyone heard of this problem?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a WUSB54GC v.1 wireless USB adapter which I use to connect to my home network. For some reason, over time my reception has been getting worse. I'm not sure if this is due to the router or the adapter. In addition, when the signal strength dips below 50%, I can no longer receive email or browse the web. This is only a problem with Ubuntu - when I had WinXP installed, I could access the internet mostly regardless of the signal strength.
I started a year ago with the adapter plugged directly into the computer. After a while I found it necessary to use an extension cord to place the adapter outside my room, closer to the router. A while later it was time for another extension cord, and now my reception has gotten worse again, but I can't extend it any further.
I'm using 3g modem(broadband) for connect to the internet. how can I check signal strength in ubuntu 10.04.

I was really hoping to get somewhere around 150 - 300 kB/s. Hence my question: how can I "debug" the connection in Linux, i.e. what is the signal strength and if it managed to connect using 3G or only GSM.

I've got a Linksys WMP54G Pci card of some kind that's being reported as a Ralink rt2500 pci, but it is very slow (50k/s cap) and has jumpy signal strength (goes between 70% and 10% every second or so, while the router is in the same room). It is just this pc, as I'm using my laptop fine right now with no such condition. I am running basically a fresh version of Slackware 12.2, so it's kernel version 2.6.27.7. I have used this with Slackware 13 and there was absolutely no issue, so I think it may be a wrong or outdated driver, but building kernel modules and updating whatever module it should be is not something that I'm very good at.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was running windows vista 32 bit (NOW UBUNTU 9.10) on my custom built pc with a TP-LINK TL-WN353GD wireless pci card, before on vista my wifi signal strength would be in the low 70% range with a speed of 54 Mbps from a access point roughly 250 yards away, now with ubuntu 9.10 signal strength in the 15-20% range with a speed of 1 Mbps. My question is, what is the best way to overcome this wifi signal strength and speed problem, it is a noticable performance disadvatange easily seen on a website like ..... where as before videos would play 95% of the time without having to stop and catch up, would a different wireless pci card be a better choice than what I have, or is the problem in the software as in a driver incompatability or lack of correct driver, not sure how to remedy the problem.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed 10.10 on a Dell Inspiron 1300. The wired connection(eth0) works fine but I get no wireless signal when I unplug and try to connect to my network/internet. It shows that wlan0 does exist but it gets no signal. I've used the rfkill to make sure that it wasn't blocked and everything seems to be ok, except I get no wireless signal.
I uninstalled Network Manager and installed Wcid and it found nothing. I even tried installing several signal scanners I found in the package manager. I've removed, updated and reinstalled the broadcom drivers. I still get nothing. The wireless signal from my router is nonexistent according to Ubuntu.
The wireless works fine when I put my windows XP HD in and it also works fine when I put my Mepix or PCLinux OS HDs in the laptop. So I know that the wireless card is not busted.
I have discovered the world of freewares not long ago and it surprised me! To go a bit further, I have installed Lubuntu 10.4 LTS on an old laptop: HP Pavilion zv5326 with 256 Mo RAM.
Everything works fine except the wifi.

I thought it was ok, since I use the wifi only for accessing the internet. However, the network manager keeps dropping the signal, and I can't understand why. I'm close enough to the router.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIve been using fedora 11 fora few months now and suddenly today after I booted up fedora network authentication(the little icon that lets me choose wifi networks) isnt showing up in the upper right hand corner which isnt that big of a problem but the fact that its on start up applications and its not wondering is what Im wondering about but on top of that my internet doesnt work at all.It will work for a little bit after boot then die and when I go to network authentication and network manager no wifi networks show up and I have about 5 around my house not including my own which is also what ive been wondering.

I need to take to bring back wireless connectivity to my netbook and restore the wifi icon to the task bar.
I just installed ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. everything was working fine until i installed firestarter. i didnt like it and uninstalled it. when i did that i lost my wireless signal icon at the top of the screen, firefox starts up in offline mode, and limewire says that network connection is lost. i just want it back the way it was before installing firestarter. please help, i dont want to reinstall ubuntu if i dont have to.

I have a problem with other devices around my house that operate on this range of frequencies and it effects ubuntu while its booting, to the extent that it won�t load. My wireless router is on the 2000000 khz range therefore I only really need Ubuntu to look for devices on this range of frequencies. If anyone know a way to prevent Ubuntu looking on the 5000000 khz range by editing something I would be very greatful to know how to do this.
As at the moment I am having to boot about 5 times until it eventually decided to load. Sometimes the only way I can get in, is by going into recovery mode, dropping to terminal and typing in: "sudo gdm" and eventually I get it. Which is a right pain. My old PC has new life thanks to Ubuntu 9.1. However, a few small problems still remain:
1. D-Link wireless adapter: My wireless connection percentage never seems to get higher than 70%, even though the wireless router is right outside the door. And to top it off, I can see other neighbor's networks and the signal strength is higher! I am running ndiswrapper if that helps, and the connection is WPA/WPA2, speed of 130 Mb/s which is great, but can I improve the signal?
2. If I leave the computer on and come back after a while, the monitor is black, and I can see that the wireless connection is still going, but I can't seem to "wake up" the computer. I have messed with the settings, but have not attempted anything in the terminal. Can someone provide a simple fix? I would like to Suspend or Hibernate, but they don't work (meaning, I can wake up the computer). So I have resorted to simply logging off each time, which works.
3. Watching streaming video using RealPlayer, many times the screen freezes, and I am unable to navigate to anywhere else on the computer. Meaning, the mouse moves, but cannot open, close, change, do anything on the computer. Ctrl-Alt-Dlt doesn't even work to pop up anything. Is there a less abrupt way to Force Quit than holding down the power button on my computer and restarting the whole thing? I am sure that is not too good for the computer.
So im pleased that my mobile broadband connection works but unfortunately the gnome/ubuntu way of displaying the connection strength is poor to say the least. Shown in this screenshot is my connection, 4 out of 4 bars.
BUT, does this mean i have a decent signal but only gprs? How do i tell if i have connected with 3G hspda gprs etc....?

I was using VPN connection before to be able to use skype (it's blocked in the Middle East...) but can't get it to work in Linux I've installed the network manager, added and configured the VPN connection but when I click on it to connect it doesn;t do anything.
