Within the last couple of days or so, my wireless has been on the fritz. It keeps disconnecting and reconnecting every minute or so, which is annoying to say the least. The information relating to my wireless network is:

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop running Fedora 12. Recently my wireless connection has begun dropping every few hours and not reconnecting. After trying for about 30-45 seconds, the WPA password prompt comes up but still doesn't connect.

I've just loaded the new Hamachi2 Linux beta with Haguichi for a GUI. Everything installed & connects OK, but the connection at the hub is dropping & reconnecting every minute or so. I tried adding a line to the sshd_config file to keep it alaive but it didn't make a difference.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am running F13 on my Desktop (with a Ralink RT2870 wireless card) and also on my Laptop (Acer Aspire 5738Z) and am connecting to the internet via a NetGear router. On my Laptop I can connect to the internet fine with no problems. However on my Desktop when I turn my computer on it connects to the internet fine, and works, however after some time (maybe 5-10 minutes) it disconnects and the box asking for the password reappears, then I click connect but no joy.
The connection box just keeps reappearing and it won't connect again until I restart the computer (although sometimes it takes more than 1 restart!). This is not a signal issue, as my Desktop also has a Windows partition and that connects to the internet fine and does not drop off. I have installed the RT2870 driver through rpmfusion, which didn't fix the problem, although uninstalling the driver didn't stop the card from working.
Running Debian GNU / Linux 5.0.4 on an older Gateway tower. Have been using this for a year now but it seemed lately that the browser was loading pages slowly. I checked the Network Icon and every time I check it indicates "disconnected" then refreshes and indicates connected. The log makes references to redat, which my machine has nothing to do with? I checked the system logs and get the following repeated messages:

Does anyone know of an application that continually scans for devices on a network and notifies you if a device connects/disconnects to/from the network? I just want a way of knowing when a computer is connected and when it's not.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI am running openVPN to secure my wireless network traffic right now. Everything works great except every once in a while, my Internet connection will drop out for about a minute or so. Ubuntu very nicely tries to reconnect, and most of the time successfully does. The issue is that if I don't catch it every time this happens, I am now running without my VPN.
I want to know if there is any way to DISABLE auto-reconnect to a wireless network if connection is lost or signal fades.

using Hardy Heron on a old Thinkpad T41.This is a fresh install system and I noticed it kept dropping wireless connection. After google around, seems like this is a common problem? Then I switched to wired network, and turned out the same thing happens again. Looks like doesn't matter wired or wireless, it kept dropping itself from time to time.

This is weird. I will be working on the internet with several tabs open and all of a sudden the pages won't update. I can't go anywhere - it's like I lost the connection. I am also downloading bittorrents with uTorrent running with WIne and that doesn't seem to be affected. I also have gPodder and I tried to update podcasts with that and it also hangs up as if it can't connect. The only way I have been able to solve this has been to reboot (which I just did).

I have DSL and had a Westell router/modem combo and my wireless would stay up for no more than 15 mins at a time even while idle, and in order to get wireless back I have to reboot and then I can get another 5-15 mins of wireless before it drops. When it drops it prompts me for my wep key and wont accept it yet if I reboot it catches the wireless right away for a very short period. So I go out today and spend over $100 bucks on a Netgear dgn2000 thinking it would fix the problem... Nope I am still in the same boat as I was with the Westell.
I am not seeing my router model listed under the wiki link sticky.. (Edit) thought I installed ndiswrapper, it was it was in my downloads anyway I can't install it I get the following error (Not a valid driver .inf file.)I have tried 3 distros and have the same problem. I'm running ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop with broadcom BCM4322 wireless card.Basically what keeps happening is my wireless will stop working, then network manager will notify me that I have lost signal. It will then try and reconnect, but it never seems to be successful. The only way I can get the wireless to work again is if I disable wireless then re-enable wireless (or do a complete system restart).
However, it does not seem to have this problem at home. The only difference I can think of from home and school is either encryption types (the university uses WEP, I use WPA) or the fact that at home there is only one access point and at university there are multiple access points all with the same SSID.Anyone have any idea how to make my laptop stop dropping connection all the time?

I'm having a problem with the wireless on my Asus EEEPC 1000HE using Ubuntu 110.04. Digging into the laptop forums, it says there is a problem with wireless on some models of the 1000HE, but it is not the same wireless device and my wireless problem doesn't seem as bad as listed, so I think it's a different problem. But my problem is that if wireless drops for any reason, it will not start working again unless I either reboot the computer or click the wireless icon in the systray, click disconnect so it stops flashing (like it's trying to reconnect) and then suspend my computer or log off and back on. And it only does the latter because I added a file located at /etc/pm/config.d/00sleep_module with the one line that reads SUSPEND_MODULES="rt2800pci" (my wireless driver) So that one line seems to cause wireless to get a fresh connection after suspending (or something. I'm not a very advanced LInux user). I've tried running the command "sudo/etc/init.d/networking restart", but that does nothing for me. I'm not sure what other command to try to see if can fix it.[URL]

A dd-wrt access point is plugged into eth1 and then a bridge connecting my xbox360 and another bridge connecting a desktop computer.Everything works pretty well, except a few times a day, my network will just shut down. The wireless on my macbook and my wife's laptop will just shut down, and if my xbox is running, it will lose connectivity. It will be down for maybe a minute or two, and then come back up like nothing ever happened.I never had this problem when I had just a dd-wrt router running everything instead of my server.When I ssh into my server afterwards and run dmesg, this is what I will get:

My network seems to be dropping every few minutes to few hours. There are a lot of networks in the area (apartment in NYC) and I wonder if it might be due to competing traffic. Any ideas for how to tell what channels other networks are on? or other modifications to router settings that might improve performance in this situation?Additionally the "Invalid Misc" in iwconfig is counting quite quickly.
View 4 Replies View RelatedAs soon as i'm starting to copy a large file enough file (>700Mb) to my ubuntu box (connected to an Asus router via wifi) from a Windows 7 client (connected to router via ethernet cable) i get a dramatic drop in speed. upload starts at 1,0Mb/sec with a ping to ubuntu box at <1ms, and in 2 minutes it drops to 200kb/sec with a ping of over 1000ms! The ping increases with every second in a linear progression.
To exlude router as a possible problem copying to a windows 7 notebook connected to router via wifi results in an average of 2,7Mb/sec with an average ping of 150ms.

as the titles states my wireless is dropping out but the networks manager is still saying i have a connection. the only way i have been able to be on the network every minute or so i have to manauly disconnect and reconnect to my wifi. under my windows 7 and vista installs the wireless card works fine now my card is a dlink dwa-547 and it uses the arthores chipset, it is encprtyed wifi, wpa2 aes on a n/g based network

It has been working fine since I installed 10.04 but recently (end of last week I think) it stared dropping the wireless connection very often. So it will disconnect and reconnect, but I can't seem to find a pattern, sometimes it goes for hours without an issue and sometimes it does it several times in a row. I have just switch to Ubuntu on my laptop from Windows 7 and I am experiencing alot of wireless dropping.
The signal itself is full and I am very close to the router.
What could be the issue and how do I go about rectifying it.
Laptop: Dell 13z.

I have a windows installation (partition) but have installed into freespace on the same drive using the auto-partition manager, etc, and everything is fine. I got my network going fairly easily by going Preferences > Wireless and inputting SSID and WPA encryption key (PSK). My router issues an WLAN IP, I can get on the net, I can see my other Windows PCs on the network, I can reach my router, and all is good.So after several hours of mooching about and looking at things, I have updated all the Linux packages via Synaptics (following a prompt to update everything) including GRUB. My dual boot now shows two versions of the OS:
GRUB 1.7~Beta4
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-19 - generic (I am booting this one)
Ubuntu, Linux 2.6.31-14 - generic
I also set up my HP F4580 printer over wifi on the network though with slightly incorrect drivers (for the F4400 series as this was recommended at the closest match). It works, and I can print a test page no problem.The only thing is that now (since doing all that) Ubuntu seems to periodically drop my connection to the network and then request the network PSK again, but when I enter it, it spends time trying to renegotiate but fails, and then re-requests the PSK, over and over and it never reconnects. I have to reboot and then I can connect again (automatically), until it drops at some random point (like 5 or 10 mins later)
Sorry if this has already been solved;answered anywhere else - I tried looking it up but to no avail. The problem persists & the hints I found around the forum did not provide a solution to the case, neither other net solutions i looked up I run Winblows at the lab and sometimes take my Ubuntu PC with me. There is an open Wireless network where they set MAC permission, and there's no pwd to access. It so should be fairly easy to change m MAC and access it, right! No. I run ifconfig and macchange, successfully change my MAC addr BUT the connection drops! Then if I change it back (MAC to my original address) it goes back online. And yes, I shut down the service -- "ifconfig wlan0 down" and then up..WHAT ON EARTH am I doing wrong??? No webpages touch this 'trouble-frigging-shooting instance!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've got a Belkin F5D8055 v1 wifi usb adapter. I use the rt2800usb driver for it. Strangely it uses only 54 Mbit/s instead of 300 Mbit/s. I thought it was ok, since I use the wifi only for accessing the internet. However, the network manager keeps dropping the signal, and I can't understand why. I'm close enough to the router.

Since OpenSuse 11.2 doesn't reconnect samba shares upon a resume from suspend, I wrote a small, ugly script to do so. It's placed in /etc/pm/sleep.d/66samba-remount

The 15 seconds sleep time is useful to me to postpone the remount after WiFi is back online. Perhaps there are way more elegant ways to do so (check for x times if WiFi is on, for example), but I'm no good at bash, and this serves me well. How do I file a wishlist for 11.3? If someone puts a samba share in fstab, I'd assume he wants it connected mostly everytime (at startup for sure... so why not over a standby?) I hope 11.3 just reconnects in-fstab samba shares in a polished way, out of the box.
I want to know any command which is equal to disconnecting and reconnecting lan cable. actually sometimes my router takes some time to connect to internet and when this happens my desktop shows network disconnected. but when router is connected system does no detect it and i have to manually disconnect and reconnect the cable which is not convenient.

I'm just having a bit of trouble with activating my wireless card (see title for details). rfkill - I installed it but nothing was soft / hard blocked (whatever they mean). I did the rfkill unblock command anyway but it didn't appear to change anything Tried doing it manually through system-config-network but this yielded no luck either. Basically all it does is continually ask for my WEP key, even though I've typed it in correctly a million times. why I don't have WPA2 because I do not have the ability to change it

View 2 Replies View RelatedBeen trying to deal with this one for some time, and still not sure it's more or an issue on the Samba or Win 7 side.
Running Ubuntu 10.04 with Samba 3.4.7, using Windows clients from 2000 on up to access shares.
2000 and XP have no trouble both connecting initially to shares, but upon reboot the shares are disconnected and do not automatically reconnect unless one of them is double-clicked on. Passwords and mappings are saved such that Windows tries to reconnect upon restart. When manually reconnected in this way, shares remain open as they should. This isn't a big issue, but it would be preferable to have these shares reconnect so that links and shortcuts across the LAN work right from bootup.
The bigger issue is with Vista/Windows 7 - When shares are set up with appropriate passwords and such on the clients, they work as expected, until the client is rebooted. After signing into windows 2 things are observable:
- Black screen for 2-5 minutes before desktop appears
- error message appears when you try to double-click on a mapped share (even with a saved password) that the connection cannot be restored.
If you go into credentials manager and delete the saved password for the share(s) on the samba server, you are prompted for the password when you try to open any of the shares - reenter it and you're then fine until the next reboot.
There must be some issue with the persistence of the saved password, but not sure if this a Windows-side issue or not. Read some other info on this, and had to make the following changes earlier to even get Win 7 clients to connect to samba at all:

It appears that when Win 7 starts up, it simply can't connect using the saved password, and the desktop doesn't come up until the reconnecting action(s) time out (if you disconnect your win 7 machine from the network the delay is not present).
It's not a game-breaker, but really annoying when rebooting having the delay and reentering the network share password(s).
I am using ubuntu 9.10. in my area there are frequent power outage. So my wifi get disonnected as the router stops. And it asks for security code. So when power comes the router starts but i have to manually write the security code and connect to wifi again. how i can make the computer to auto connect to wifi after power comes.
