Hardware :: Copy A Compiled A Module/driver For USB Wifi Router To Another Distro

Jun 23, 2010

Recently I bought a Usb wifi router Belkin F6D4050 as my old laptop does not have a wifi chip. Unfortunately Belkin does not give Linux drivers for their products. I searched around the web and found a solution where after downloading the ralink drivers and making some modifications it worked under ubuntu

As my laptop is a PIII I decided to install Arch core image and build on it. I followed the same instructions in compiling the drivers for the usb router and yes it worked under arch linux.

It generated a .ko file and it loads at boot time.

Now say I want to use Puppy/Ubuntu etc instead of Arch and I want to access wifi through the router.

My question is whether copying this .ko file specific to the device to another distro puppy/ubuntu in the similar path make it work or it needs to be recompiled on the new distro

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 - WiFi Not Being Able To Surf Web Or Download

Aug 10, 2011

A few days ago I decided to do a clean install of 11.04 (which I was running when I followed this thread [URL], which solved my problem of my wifi not being able to surf the web or download anything, even though it said i was connected). After the install i noticed that my wifi was acting up and I realized I had to install the realtek driver again, like I did the first time. I followed the thread I stated above again the exact same as I did the first time when it worked for me, now when I boot up I get stuck after the grub menu, it goes to a black screen and I cannot get off of it. I reinstalled ubuntu 11.04 and everything was fine, then I compiled the realtk driver again and the same thing happened. Kernel version 3.6.38-10 Generic (I think this has something to do with the black screen after the Grub menu).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: 4870x2 Catalyst Driver \ Finding The Proper Configuration Of OS Version And Driver Version?

Apr 8, 2010

I've been searching for an hour or so and can't seem to find a concrete answer. My endgame is having Ubuntu successfully installed (either 9.10 or 10.04) with a fully working Ati 4870x2. I desperately need some help on finding the proper configuration of OS version and driver version. I installed 10.04 with the 10.3 driver package from ATI's site and it was a no go - I had nothing but problems.

I would like to have full 3d acceleration so I can play some games through Wine. This is a powerful card - I know ATI doesn't have a great reputation in the Linux world but I really hope there is a driver version I can install to get some good results. The rest of my specs are in my signature I need to install 64 bit Ubuntu to make use all of the system and video ram.

Ubuntu Networking :: Variable Download Speeds, Faulty Wifi Card?

Oct 12, 2010

I'm having a variety of problems getting a new PC working properly, getting a reliable wifi connection is one of them. Earlier today I upgraded to 10.10 using my wife's account and download speeds were frequently at a reasonable 800kbps at times. This evening my son complains about the slow speed and a test shows 133kbps download with 616kbps upload. My own PC connected by wire to the router works OK.

A couple of days ago this problem seemed resolved when I installed Wicd but didn't configure it. I thought Network-Manager would have been removed but was still present. However, a downloads test showed 6Mbps. After today's upgrade slow downloads have returned.

I'm currently using this PC with a wifi link to the router and am connected to the Forum. If I hover the mouse pointer over the N-M toolbar symbol a window opens saying-

Wireless network connection 'Auto MYESSID'active:MYESSID(67%) If I right mouse click on the N-M symbol and select Edit connection... the wireless window reports that I was last connected 3 days ago. My own PC's wired connection window says against Auto eth0 that I've never used this. Both these are untrue. I wondered if having a hidden ESSID doesn't help? I'm left thinking that the rt2500 based wifi card needs replacing. We're some distance from other houses.

Ubuntu :: Any Other Site Where Can Find Proper Driver?

Jan 11, 2011

I have connected a PC running Ubuntu 10.10 to an LG TV through HDMI. I get an image, but the borders are out of the screen. At the screen dialogue of Ubuntu, the monitor isn't listed correctly. Ubuntu recognise the monitor as Goldstar Company Ltd. 52" whereas it is LG 47". I suppose it produces an image for 52", and for this reason I cannot see the borders. I have not a video card. The job is done by the i3 cpu, so I suppose it is not a problem of the card.

How can I solve it? LG doesn't provide a driver for Linux. Is there any other site where I can find the proper driver? Or is there anything else I can do to fix this? It is vital for me, as I cannot work at all with this setup.

Ubuntu Networking :: EeePC 901 Dropping WiFi Connection - Need New Driver?

Jan 5, 2010

Here's the situation: I've got an eee pc 901 running Ubuntu 9.10 netbook remix. I'm using it to connect to a WPA-encrypted wireless network on a WRT54GL running dd-wrt. It mostly connects and works ok, but sometimes it just stops working for no apparent reason (the netbook still shows itself as connected), but you can't get anywhere until you manually disconnect and reconnect. Other times, it will drop the connection, and then quickly reconnect (or sometimes not). Obviously, this behavior is pretty irritating. At first I thought the problem was with the router, but I checked the logs there and they all seem fine, and other computers on the same router don't have this problem. Looking at "dmesg | tail" on my netbook, I see a lot of instances of the following error, which I'm thinking is probably the problem:

Code:
[11137.762233] ERROR!!! RTMPCancelTimer failed, Timer hasn't been initialize!
[11142.872797] ===>rt_ioctl_giwscan. 4(4) BSS returned, data->length = 440

[11163.952056] ERROR!!! RTMPCancelTimer failed, Timer hasn't been initialize!

I searched for that error message and I found this Ubuntu bug report: [URL] that describes symptoms that match mine. In that report, a poster mentions that he compiled and installed a new version of the wireless driver from the Ralink website, and it fixed his problem. Do you think installing a new driver would be good? Or has that updated driver already been added to the kernel since that bug report was filed? I've never compiled a kernel module before.

One other thing, I also see repeated instances of these lines (or similar ones) in dmesg, which look like they could be related.
Code:

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Connect Via Wifi Or Ethernet For Wireless Driver Activation?

Feb 13, 2011

When I select the wifi icon on the panel, it just shows "No network devices available". I know my network can be found when I search with my iPhone, so I know there are networks to connect to. So, I checked the drivers, and it informs me that the B43 and STA drivers are not activated. So thats not a big deal, I guess, but when I use my ethernet cord, my laptop doesn't recognize/acknowledge (I'm not sure what the right term would be)it. I'm fairly sure I can't activate these drivers without an internet connection because when I do try, a message pops up saying "failed to fetch" with some long link.

My only guess is that it could be a hardware problem, but I really have no idea. I guess the ethernet problem is my only real problem. Because after I establish and internet connection the the rest is easy to fix.I'm sure its obvious, but I'll go ahead say that I'm a novice ubuntu user. I've only been working with it for about a week, but I'm learning alot.

Ubuntu Networking :: Intel Broadcom - Bcmwl6 - Wifi Driver Unfunctional

Mar 3, 2011

I have a HP Pavilion dv6-2155dx Entertainment Notebook with Broadcom Wireless Lan Driver.

I didn't want to bother anyone with this, but I just could't find a solution. I was happy using Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition, because the wifi was working fine, but I messed everything up dealing with networking in terminal.

So formated and now I have Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Edition, but that didn't solved my problem at all, because my wifi driver still unfunctional.

Before anything, I tried commands like "dbus restart" and "network restart".

So after reading that I can install by getting ndisgtk and the .inf file, I downloaded the right driver from HP Support's page of my notebook. Extracted the package with Wine (got some error because I wasn't running Win7, of course, but that doesn't matter.).

I did this: [url]
