Ubuntu Networking :: Changing Modulation Type Of WLAN?
Mar 29, 2010
I am new to using ubuntu. I am trying to play with my WLAN by changing its modulation, power, bitrate, channel etc. When I am trying to change the modulation type i had an error like this # iwconfig wlan0 modu 11g Error for wireless request "Set Modulation" (8B2F) : SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported. so i checked for different modulation types my WLAN supports this produced an error like this.
# iwlist wlan0 modulation wlan0 unknown modulation information. I even cannot access the power types my WLAN supports. I am using Intel wireless wifi link 5100. change the modulation type and power for my WLAN?
I've two WLAN AP's with both a different IPv6 subnet. When I change from one AP to the other, my IPv6 Global address stays valid and so is the default IPv6 gateway. After a while I get another Global address from the second AP's subnet and another default IPv6 gateway for the second subnet. Both have the same metric. IPv6 connectivity is broken now. When I disable wireless on the laptop and reenable it, it flushes all IP addresses and receives new ones and connectivity is restored. Does anyone know if this is normal behaviour or should it normaly flush all the addresses when changing network? It's a bit silly to have to disable/enable wireless all the time..
In my system around 73gb(pc-desktop) i have,1 primary partition(windows)-25gb, 1-extended partition(remaining gb) 3 logical partitions were there in (under) extended partition in one of the logical partition is d:drive. in my hard disk d: drive is -/dev/sda5
previosly i was fat -file system , (d:drive-/dev/sda5), i remember i changed the d: drive(d:drive-/dev/sda5) file system to ext4file system ,with following command using terminal
After doing(changing the file system)this one ,i couldnt see the d:drive data
By doing that
1q) Did i reformatted the partition? i think the new filesystem(ext4) has no knowledge of the data that was on it when it had a FAT filesystem.
2q) How to do undo operation,i tried to change the filesystem type to fat/ntfs in terminal using command --sudo mkfs -t FAT /dev/sda5.
Result:its showing text message-'mkfs.FAT: No such file or directory'(not in single quote)
Is there a way to force the Intel 3945ABG card w/ driver iwl3945 into a specific modulation mode? 802.11G for instance? Instead of the auto a/b/g I tried
Code: sudo iwconfig wlan0 modu 11g And got an error like the following: SET failed on device wlan0 ; Operation not supported.
A while ago, I installed a windows application (on wine) called Max/msp. I have uninstalled it, and removed wine from my system (deleting ~/.wine as well), but now I'm left with some files thinking they are "Max Externals." How do I fix this/restore to the default file types?
I am unable to change session type when not requiring passord on login.
How requiring password was changed:
System/Administration/Users and Groups Clicked on my User Clicked "Change" next to "Password: Asked on login" Checked the checkbox for "Don't ask for password on login" OK'd, everything
Please try this yourself as it might be hard to understand. But the option to change session type (ie: Gnome failsafe instead of reguar Gnome) is only visable along side with the password field.
Is it possible to make the session type setting visable without requiering password on login?
My current keyboard settings are not handling accents and umlauts properlye.g. I get "eao" instead of " "How can I change the keyboard type from what was chosen during the installation?
Once you have VLC open, select file, it only lists certain file types. Now if you go down to the bottom you can tell it to use other types (like *.*). How does one set it so one does not have to go down and change the file types every time? So that it shows all file types, all the time, by default.
Well, I enjoy the show Stargate SG-1, and I was wondering if there was any way I could get my voice to sound like that of a Goa'uld or Tok'ra while I am talking on Skype.
i currently have both xubuntu 10.10 32-bit and windows 7 64-bit installed on my laptop which i use mostly for college work and basic programming (i'm still learning to program).i have a 150gb partition with win7 installed, a 20gb partition with xubuntu installed and a 15gb partition with my linux home folder on, the rest of the space is unused because i thought i may need it for something else in the future.the home folder partition is formatted to etc4, i now have a need to access this data from win7 for college work, i know that windows doesn't support mounting of etc file systems so i have hit a problem.
i thought about changing the type of partition from a ect4 to fat32 but will this delete my data? or ,are there any third party software packages for windows that will allow me to mount ect4?
There is no wlan0 interface when trying to run FRITZ!WLAN USB Stick N 2.4 on OpenSuSE 11.2, though it works fine on Fedora 11 and Mandriva Spring 2009.1. All 64bit. Contrary to Fedora and Mandriva, there is no need to compile the compat-wireless module ar9170usb for OpenSuSE 11.2 because the kernel is very recent and includes this driver. Kernel: 2.6.31.5-0.1-desktop The /var/log/messages gives this after I put the stick in the PC. At first it is seen as a mass storage device:

At my workplace the wireless connection is open but once you connect you first need to authenticate on your browser to be able to use the internet. On Windows as soon as I open whatever page I get the login request. On Linux I open firefox but nothing happens, just get the usual error page like if I had no connection. The IP's I get as well as DNS seem ok, I even tryed to match them up with windows.I tried a lot but can't get to the login page.
specific Ubuntu supported WLAN PCI-cards? This link shows a list of supported PCI-cards, but which is best: [URL] And the installation needs to be easy! Ive tried installing these PCI-cards in my computer, useing Linux drivers, NdisWrapper, etc. Unforutately without any success:
- DWL-G510, Ralink Chipset, Ralink RT2561/RT61
- Realtek Semiconductor, RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller
Today I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04. After accidentally turning off the computer during the upgrade, booting into recovery mode, remounting the file system as writable and finishing the upgrade, it worked just fine.
However, I can no longer use any wireless networks. Wired ethernet works fine, but the wireless inteface won't even show up when I run ifconfig. When I first installed 10.10, it worked instantly and I was able to use it during installation.
I have an HP Compaq nx7300 laptop with a Broadcom BCM4311 network card.
I installed 11.04 to ASUS Z9200 Notebook, at first all was fine at least 10 minutes, LAN, WLAN worked ok, but suddenly all is gone, restarted few times -nothing. reintall-nothing...here is some info....any ideas?
I have a Thinkpad T400 notebook that dual boots windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.04. My wireless has worked both in windows and ubuntu for the past several months. However 2 days ago, the wireless in ubuntu stopped working. I think this may be a result of trying to set up a static eth0 connection between my laptop and an embedded board, but I dont see how messing with eth0 would stop the wlan from working.
Symptoms: When I left click on the network connections icon in the tray, all it lists under "Wireless networks" is "device not ready". Needless to say, there are no networks available to connect to. Also the wireless is working fine under windows.
I have bought a new laptop with win7 on it , I delete win7 and install ubuntu64 everything is ok but my wireless card won't work ( it is recognized) and even I can connect to INTERNET but nothing is download or upload so I have bought another usb wireless card but now when I connect this new card to my laptop it still tries to use the old one and so I could not connect to internet
I am trying to connect to a WEP encrypted WLAN without using the DHCP server of the AP. (=giving myself a static IP)
So far i have tried:
Code:
But i cant even ping 192.168.1.1 (Network unreachable error). Is it possible that Ubuntu tries to use eth0 (which was connected to a similar /16 before) to ping 192.168.1.1 or is there somethign wrong with my commands?
Also will an AP allow access to the network although i don't have an IP from its DHCP server?
I can connect my wlan card to router (gateway) ,but I can't go to internet, pinging my router (and everything else) also falied. Same problem was with knoppix but with help of others i solved it modifing etc/reslove.conf IP address to my gateway (nameserver). At ubuntu resolve.conf seems ok, as there is already IP address of my gateway?
All I want to do is share my internet connection that comes through the eth0 cable to my wlan0 wiki card. Firestarter seems the convenient tool for doing this. BUT it keeps telling me wlan0 not ready. The card is connected correctly and network-manager does see incoming signals.
I'm a new user of Ubuntu and I think I need some help but let me mention before that I got this up working on a Debian system. My current kernel version is $ uname -r 2.6.32-27-generic.The problem is that my wlan card is not working any more such that my system freezes every time I enable networking with the hardware switch on my laptop. Therefore I bought a USB - WLAN stick and try to get this working.
Network Manager has the option "enable wireless" greyed out if I disable the hardware switch. If I enable the hardware switch and remove the module of my wlan CARD before (modprobe -r iwl3945) it says "wireless disconnected" for all networks.
anybody out there with an idea for a command to make the WLAN-Printer (HP-Officejet)work again when it stops after 30 Min - 2 h.Simple stopping the print job and print again does not help. The only way for me is to stop the print job and RESTART. Then it works again 30 Min- 2 h. I use updatet lucid lynx 32.
And I need a command like "killall pulseaudio" that I need when I return from logged-on as the second user to get sound again.
I have just installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an Acer TravelMate 290E. I've got internet connection through the Ehternet Cable, but when I plug in the D-Link WLAN USB device, although the system recognises it, it is disconnected. How can I connect the WLAN USB device adn get it to work?
my network was a dream to set up under ubuntu 9.10. all i had to do was enter pass key, then that was it. Works brilliantly.
Different matter with studio. The thing I notice in network connections is, it doesn't want to retain my pass phrase, if I go back into properties the phrase is blank. As far as I can tell the wireless card has been reconcognized and is communicating with router.
My system is: asus p5ql-vm epu, intel core2 duo 2.8 e7400, 4gb 1067 ddr2 ram, belkin f5d7050 v4000, edimax router.

On my HP TX2500 laptop, dual-booting Vista and 9.04, Ubuntu installation found the WLAN and it works fine.I installed VirtualBox with Vista as the host and 9.04 as the guest. Wired Ethernet works fine but it didn't seem to find my WLAN. What more do I need to do?
I have a desktop and laptop both running ubuntu 10.04. I have them going through a wireless router, the desktop is wired of coarse. I installed just about all the samba packages in synaptic that have the little ubuntu symbol next to them on both desktop and laptop except the Kde and document packages. I installed the two necessary packages to enable personal file sharing to work. But I can't seem to access files back and forth from these computers.
Am having intermittent connectivity issues with my stock Atheros AR5212 on my Thinkpad X61 using Ubuntu 10.04. Am wondering if there is a known to be good b/g min-PCIe card that I can replace my AR5212 with that would be more solid in Ubuntu?
I'm trying to use the nm-applet tool get a static ip on my wlan. I've created a configuration and set up the IPV4 settings ok but I can't figure out how to stop nm-applet from creating and using the auto wlan configuration. I've tried deleting the auto config but it seems to recreate it when I try to use wireless again. How to make the manual config the default or permanently disable the auto (dhcp) config?
