Ubuntu Networking :: Can't Turn Laptop's Wireless On

May 5, 2010

I installed Kubuntu 10.04 on my laptop (HP Pavilion dv5-1010) and the networking was working fine for the most part, but then not sure what happened, the screen just kinda went blank so I restarted the laptop, and now the wireless won't turn on. There's a button on the laptop to turn it on and off, but I can't seem to get that to function in Linux. I'm assuming it's just a simple matter of getting the wireless to switch back on again, unfortunately I can't figure out how to do that .

Edit: I've tried to whole booting into windows and turning the wireless on there, and before that's worked, but it doesn't seem to be working this time around.

Ubuntu 10.4 LTS as a Live CD (intend to dual boot later, testing for now.) Laptop : Acer Aspire 5251-1513 Wireless card: Atheros AR928X PCI-Express

To turn this on in Windows, I have to do Fn F3. But it does not work in Ubuntu. Most of the other Fn keys work, sound, screen, brightness. Found some relative info, but nothing that might be certain

Now, I know there are some issues with that Artheros card, but I think i need to first get it activated.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Card Will Not Turn On

Jan 10, 2011

I have an HP Compaq 6735s with a Broadcom 802.11 a/b/g draft-n wireless card that I've been running 9.10 (the karmic koala one I think it was called) on for the past 7 or 8 months (been running Ubuntu in general for the last couple years). The card won't turn on--the indicator light is always orange, not blue as it should be. I thought it might be a hardware problem so I took it to a shop, but they tested it several times and said the card was fine and that upgrading my software should solve the problem.

I just upgraded it to the 10.10 distro (usually a friend did my upgrades for me but alas that's no longer an option) but that has not fixed it. I thought to try and re-download the Broadcom drivers on a different computer, then transfer them to my laptop, but when I did that and tried to open the .exe file, a message popped up saying the file was no good. (Can you tell I'm not a computer pro yet? Haha) Any idea how I could fix this or what the problem might be? I'm really frustrated as it's been an issue for the last six months, plus this is my only computer and I need it to function fully for purposes of finding a job, etc. If I could I'd just buy a different computer at this point (really disappointed with HP laptops in general) but sadly that's not an option. I'm to the point where I'd consider running Windows again just to make the damn thing work.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Do Not Want To Turn On?

Jul 13, 2011

switched from 4 years Ubuntu use due to Unity, and thus also new to this forum but I hope that you can help me, so I later on can give back to the community. My problem is that the Wireless in Network Manager refuse to go to "on", or to be more correct it goes to "on" for about a second and then back to "off". My computer which uses F15, a Lenovo B560 laptop, have a BCM4313 and the apparent reason is that after that I installed the broadcom-wl and run "su -c 'modprobe wl'" so did I get the response "FATAL: Driver not found". However, the earlier non-existing wireless button in the network manager appeard after the installation, id est the broadcom-wl must have been in plase.

Ubuntu Networking :: Turn Box To Wireless Acces Point For IPod/IPhone?

Aug 15, 2010

====== Wireless Access Point & IP Forwarding Mini-Howto ======Use case: we have a pc (laptop, for that matter) with UBUNTU 10.04, and with wired connection to the internet. We want to connect iPod/iPhone or any other device to this laptop, and browse the internet, effectivelly turning our pc/laptop to a WI-FI access point. At this stage, we would not implement any encryption, so our network would be open to anyone.

Oour pc/laptop have 2 working interfaces, wlan0 and eth0. Device eth0 is the wired connection to the internet, device wlan0 is going to be set up as the wireless access point for the iPod/iPhone or similar gadget. We want to forward any IP traffic attached to wlan0 through to eth0. Interface eth0 can either obtain the IP addres from DHCP server on the router, or it can be fixed, it does not matter. But we definitelly need to set fixed IP address to wlan0, and configure dhcp server to listen on this interface.

===== Things to do =====
configure iptables to forward the traffic from wlan0 to eth0
setup wlan0 in /etc/network/interfaces

Fedora Networking :: HP Mini 110 Broadcom Wireless - Can't Get The Card To Turn On Using The Slide Switch

Sep 11, 2009

I have an HP mini 110 with Fedora 11 install. I installed the broadcom-wl and wl-kmod from yum but still no wireless. First I can't get the broadcom card to turn on using the slide switch on the front of the computer. The device is inactive in the network configuration-devices window. The card is not in the network configuration hardware window. When I try to add it manually, there is no entry for the card in the drop down list. I am new to Fedora but have used linux for years. Unfortunately this is my first attempt at wireless networking.

The posts and google stuff doesn't say much more than "yum install broadcom-wl" Can anyone point me into the right direction? I have a feeling I am missing something very simple, because this computer dual boots Linux Mint and wireless works flawlessly.

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 Newtwok Manager Bug - Wireless And PAN?

Jun 23, 2010

First the wireless bug. This was in 9.10 as well. If I start at home, log in to my wireless and everything works. Then I close the laptop and go to work. It suspends. I get to work and I log onto the wireless here. Then when I go back home (another suspend) it thinks it is still connected to the work wifi when it wakes up. It will *not* connect to the home network. It sees it and attempts a connection, (releases the work ssid and tries to connectm but fails every time). I have tried taking the if down than back up, I tried turning off wireless then back on. etc. The *only* way I have been able to get it to log back on is to reboot.

Network manager no longer supports PAN (it did in 9.10). I have BT set up to create a PAN with my iPhone. It never shows up in the network manager. It connects via USB, but never shows the BT PAN. ifconfig shows a valid connection, but it always shows a connection with an ip address..

Ubuntu Networking :: Static Wireless IP With Network Manager?

Jul 3, 2011

I want to set up a static IP on my laptop that connects via wireless to my home network. I have 11.04 installed on my laptop. When I try to use the manual IPv4 setting in the network manager the save option gets greyed out. I tried to edit the /etc/network/interfaces file but all the examples I could find on the net refer to eth0. I tried replacing this with wlan0 but this did not work. I tried installing wicd but I kept getting "Bad Password" errors even though I know the password is correct. A number of people recommended uninstalling network manager to get wicd to work but many other posts said that uninstalling network manager didn't help so I didn't want to go ahead and uninstall unnecessarily. Besides I figure if Ubuntu is distributed with network manager there must be a reason for having it. So what do I do to get a static IP address for the client on a wireless connection?

1. I went to network manager and selected "Connection Information" On the information window I saw the following:

IPv4
IP Address: 192.168.1.6 (This is the item I wanted to change and make static)
Broadcast Address: 192.168.1.255
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0

[code].....

2. I went to network manager and selected "Edit Connections"
3. I selected the wireless tab and then the wireless network I wanted to edit
4. I clicked on the edit button and then I clicked on the IPv4 settings tab.
5. I changed method from Automatic (DHCP) to Manual

What I don't get though, is that if the rnx n2x isnt supported by linux, wouldn't I not be getting my neighbors connections to begin with?
