Ubuntu Networking :: WUSB600N V1 Install On 10.04 - Iwconfig Shows Wlan0 With An ESSID:"" And Nickname: "RT2870STA"
Jan 6, 2011
I've been trying now for 2 days to get my WUSB600N v1 adapter installed on 10.04. I'm a bit of a noob but have been able to follow some posts on here on getting it set up. This is what I've done:
Installed the Ralink RT2870 drivers. Changed the config.mk to enable some parameters. Compiled and installed. Added some entries to blacklist.conf. Updated network/interfaces to include my wpa settings and passphrase. Restarted/rebooted/reinstalled about 100 times!
Here's what happens: iwconfig shows wlan0 with an ESSID:"" and Nickname: "RT2870STA" iwlist wlan0 scan shows my router fine (although does not show Cell 02 which should be the 5GHZ range). So basically it's not connecting to my router. Not sure if I missed any steps. Will gladly provide some extra output if needed. Pulling my hair out over this now ready to throw the adapter in the trash.

I recently got my Belkin USB wireless adapter working by following some other threads in these forums. Now I would like to connect to my access point. iwlist scan works great and I can see my AP along with others. However when I follow the step by step instructions here: [URL]... I fail during the DHCP request with no DHCPOFFERS. My AP is using WEP encryption for now (I've even tried it with open encryption). The thing that I'm seeing or not seeing is that when I set my essid using sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid "GimpsHouse" and then after that do an iwconfig it says off/any. Here is my iwconfig

I have a Linksys AE1000 wireless adapter. I managed to install the drivers and connect it to an unsecured network called "linksys" which I can access the internet with.
However, I now want to connect to a secured network but it won't let me!
For example, I've tried doing the following:
Code: sudo iwconfig ra0 essid "MyNetwork"
My commands. It should say, ESSID:"MyNetwork" on the top line.
I'm running Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS.

I just installed Fedora 13 from the Live CD. FIrst off I read the guide and the first step doesn't even work for me. System>Administration>Network does not exist. If I go to System then Preferences I see a Network Manager but it looks nothing like what these screen shots look like. [url]
No wireless card show up in the wireless tab of Network Manager. How can I fix this since my card is listed in ifconfig and iwconfig. Wifi card is a Zonet zew2500p

I'm new to openSUSE and as a matter of fact, to linux too. I've got a Linksys WUSB600N wireless adapter which used to work fine with some live versions of linux that I was testing out before moving onto suse... Each time, upon booting using live CDs, I used to copy the driver I had downloaded from:
SpeedShare - Download rt2870-kernel-2.6.24-nemesis.tar.bz2
Then 'make' and get into the driver's os/linux directory to load the driver using 'insmod rt2870sta.ko' Now, upon doing a 'make' and 'make install', followed by the 'insmod rt2870sta.ko', I get the error saying:
insmod: error inserting 'rt2870sta.ko': -1 Invalid module format
I tried doing 'modprobe -rv rt2870sta' and didn't get any error messages. But while doing 'modprobe -v', this error shows up: insmod /lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2870sta.ko
FATAL: Error inserting rt2870sta (/lib/modules/2.6.27.7-9-default/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/rt2870sta.ko): Invalid module format

having trouble with my asus 1000 rt2860 wireless n card and WPA/PSK/WPA2 connections. Funky thing is it worked in the 2.26.32-21 kernel (iwconfig shows ra0 as the wireless interface), but when the kernel was updated and pushed through in the ubuntu updates to 2.26.32-22 the wireless card won't stay connected and iwconfig says wlan0 is the interface. I checked the proprietary drivers and they said that the driver for my card was active, but not in use. How do I use the ra0 instead of wlan0?
how do i use the driver that's listed as not being used? I'm having to boot up lucid with the older kernel now, it's annoying, lots of programs aren't running as expected as a result. I've tried manually installing the driver from the RaLink website as detailed in many other posts concerning this wireless card. It seems to work for some people, but not with me.

I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 on a my laptop with a built-in wireless card. I also installed drivers using "ndiswrapper", but I can't make the card work.
When I type "iwconfig" in the Terminal, I don't have the wlan0 listed. In the wireless network drivers, I see the driver I installed and it says: "Hardware present: Yes"

I have recently converted my old desktop computer into a server (using the ubuntu server 10.10 install disk), installed xubuntu, and have installed the driver for my WPN111 usb antenna using ndiswrapper. I then installed wicd to connect to my home network (with a WPA2 passkey). Anyways, it works great... with one major annoyance whenever I reboot (with "sudo reboot") the computer, the wireless configuration isn't detected at all.
Code:
$ iwconfig
lo no wireless extensions
eth0 no wireless extensions
The only time it works is when I turn my computer off and manually turn back it on... and then "iwconfig" gives me a third entry: wlan0. The wireless then (and only then) works like a charm. The problem is, I want to be able to access this server away from home, and of course in that situation I cannot manually reboot it.

I installed squeeze on my eeepc 1015ped and downloaded the correct firmware-brcm80211 drivers but every time I scan for my network using iwconfig wlan0 scan or wicd, my computer completely freezes. I previously had a solid install running xmonad, and wicd was working like a charm (using the same broadcom driver) but i tinkered too much with it and decided to do a fresh install. I haven't quite run into a problem like this before.

When I try to bring up my wi-fi PCI card (ifup wlan0 or ifconfig wlan0 up) my whole PC just hangs until I power it off.
I believe I have the right drivers, but cannot see what I am doing wrong.
I'd really prefer not to go down the ndiswrapper route.
Firstly, I can see the PCI card and the driver it is using :
Code:
[J@gx260-f10 ~]$ lspci -k
...
...
01:08.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8185 IEEE 802.11a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20)
[Code]....
the PC just hangs for ever. No mouse movement, ctrl-alt-del, nothing.
I have downloaded a Linux driver from Realtek but it will not compile. I have the latest kernel-devel, headers, and gcc. I can post compiler errors if anybody would like. They're all apparently to do with missing parameters.

Basically I am looking for a simple way to create a universal nickname/alias for a interface. We ship servers that have upto 6 NICs on them. The user can have those NIC configured as either ethN, bondN or vlanN interfaces. As we need to provide NIC status information we would like to be able to run commands such as
Code:
ifconfig INTERFACE1
that would map to whatever the user had already configured.

First time user who has just picked up a nice old Sony netbook to give Debian a try on. Only problem is, this little thing doesn't come with any form of Ethernet card or port, and has to rely on a USB D-link DWA 140 B1 Rev Dongle. This device identifies itself as the Type RT2870 device and when i do "lsusb", it comes out as RALink RT2870. Running the CD install of Lenny, Kernel 2.6.26-2-686, and I can't for the life of me figure out how to get this damn Wireless card working.
The Wiki tells me to look into Upping the kernel to 2.6.32, which unfortunately requires some form of internet access for the backports Also consulted and tried (unsuccessfully, the make command would not run properly) this guy's advice: [URL].... Do any of you kind people have any advice or things for me to try to finally figure out how to get this little laptop online?

I have a tenda wireless adaptor running on 11.04 natty. The USB id is: 148F 3070
Using the already installed drivers rt2800usb it can connect to all 13 channels but is very flaky, transfers slowing and stopping regularly. The rt2870sta driver is a lot more stable, but it will only connect to channels 1-11, but I need to use channel 13 due to massive wifi congestion on other channels...
I've tried iwpriv but it says there are no ioctls for the device.
Is there any way to get the installed driver rt2870sta to scan and connect to channel 13?
I've also tried to install the latest drivers from the ralink website: rt2870sta says it can see all 14 channels, but fails to scan. I also tried rt3070 driver but I cannot insmod as there are errors...

Running BT5, aircrack-ng v. 1.1, Alfa AWUS036NH.
My curiosity has been aroused by a local AP that is not transmitting an ESSID. It also is neither transmitting beacon frames nor data.
The channel shows a negative one, as does the power. Facts:
1. I know this AP is nearby because, before they hid the ESSID, the power output was fairly high.
2. Airodump-ng shows -1 channel, -1 power, and a hidden ESSID, although the BSSID is visible. Neither the channel nor the encryption scheme are being transmitted.
3. Neither beacons nor data are being sent. I can determine the correct name of the ESSID from the probe field in airodump-ng
but that is all.
4. All attempts in aireplay-ng to dissociate the client fail with the message that "No such BSSID" is found!?
5. Kismet, on the other hand, does not even see the AP.
6. Loading the .cap file in Wireshark reveals no information about those packets for which the source, or dest, is the AP.

I'm using Slackware 64 on a HP dv2500 SE. I've been using wicd for my network connection. I have a Linksys wireless router. Recently I changed my ESSID to from the default linksys to something else. Now wicd, doesn't see my router as the new name. It still sees the linksys router but obviously can't connect to it. I have connected using the "find hidden network". Mostly i have to run iwconfig eth1 essid "newname"then dhcpcd eth1my question, how can i get wicd to see the newname and connect on it's own as it used to.

I've read many threads about the Linksys WUSB600n (both versions), and tried the suggested solutions to no avail in 32-bit Ubuntu 10.04. Compiling my own drivers, adding items to the blacklist, and even a clumsy driver transplant from 32-bit 9.10 have all failed. So here's the sitch: I have a Linksys WUSB600n v1 that works perfectly in 9.10 with only the minor modification posted by chili555 in this thread
HTML Code: [URL] That solution was: "
Code:
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Add three lines:
Code:
blacklist rt2800usb
blacklist rt2x00usb
blacklist rt2x00lib
"
I've tried the same in a clean install of 10.04, but no connection is made and a prompt comes up every few minutes asking for the password. I've used the included rt2870 driver in 9.10 without problems. My wireless-N network uses WPA2 personal encryption, which has never given me issues. The usb id of my adapter, per lsusb, is ID 1737:0071

I have a CentOS 5.5 server running currently with a Netgear gigabit ethernet card and for wifi I have a wi-fi card with the chipset: RT2860.Now I have gotten the ethernet card and wi-fi card working but my main question is: How do you bridge the connection between the ethernet card and the wi-fi card to create a wireless network with a hidden ESSID if possible and WPA encryption? (So the server basically acts as a wireless router as well as doing all the other stuff I need to do on it).

I have a WUSB600N v2 and it is working great for me. Here is all you have to do. Go here and download the RT3572USB driver [URL] The file you download is called 2009_1222_RT3572_LinuxSTA_V2[1].3.0.0.tar.bz2 expand it with the command "tar xjf 2009_1222_RT3572_LinuxSTA_V2[1].3.0.0.tar.bz2"
open the file os/linux/config.mk and edit the following lines: Change HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=n to HAS_WPA_SUPPLICANT=y and Change HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=n to HAS_NATIVE_WPA_SUPPLICANT_SUPPORT=y
Next edit the file common/rtusb_dev_id.c and add the USB ID of the card to it. {USB_DEVICE(0x1737,0x0079)}, /* WUSB600Nv2 */
sudo make
sudo make install
reboot and your done.
If you have added the USB device to any other drivers following other threads you will want to either remove that line and recompile those drivers OR black list those drivers. After doing the above this NIC is working great for me in Ubuntu 9.10 and getting N speeds.

I was wondering if anyone figured out the WUSB600N ver1 with Ubuntu 10.4 yet. It's the chipset rt2870sta which works perfectly on Ubuntu 9.10 after blacklisting the other RT2x modules but following the same steps as I would 9.10 on the new release of Ubuntu won't allow me to connect via wifi at all. I went back to 9.10 for now but was hoping this would be resolved soon.

I've managed to install my WUSB600N on 10.10 (which was NOT easy!!) and I can see all my local wireless networks, but I can't connect - it attempts to connect then disconnects after what I guess is timing out.I know that you can place these cards in broadcast mode (I think), where you can see networks but not connect. Considering that to get this card working I had to attempt about four different sets of instructions to get this far, could I have placed the card in a broadcast mode? I've been at this for about three days, and unless I go out an buy another network card (I'm currently connected using it through windows) then I'm going to have to give up on Linux, which I really don't want to

I hate kernel upgrades, at least on my laptop. Every time I upgrade, I have to recompile the driver for my Linksys WUSB600N adapter or it doesn't work. Usually, this is no problem, as I have the driver saved in a .tar file and all I have to do is 'make' and 'make install' and it works. BUT... This time, I tried that, and I get this:
