Ubuntu Networking :: Create A Nickname/alias/logical Name For An Interface?
Jul 28, 2011
Basically I am looking for a simple way to create a universal nickname/alias for a interface. We ship servers that have upto 6 NICs on them. The user can have those NIC configured as either ethN, bondN or vlanN interfaces. As we need to provide NIC status information we would like to be able to run commands such as
Code:
ifconfig INTERFACE1
that would map to whatever the user had already configured.

When setting up an alias for eth0, the interface works as expected for normal traffic, but does not receive broadcast traffic.
Host 1's setup:
Code:
Pinging host 1's normal interface from host 2 works as expected:
Code:
Pinging host 1's alias interface from host 2 works as expected:
Code:
Broadcast pinging from host 2 only gets a reply from host 1's real interface (as well as some other uninteresting devices on the network):
Code:
I have confirmed by listening on both interfaces using netcat, and broadcasting using netcat, and again only the real interface receives data.
Is this by design, or is it possible to get interface aliases to receive broadcast traffic?

I'm trying to create EoIP interface on ubuntu so i can create a simple tunnel to my mikrotik router. Is there anyone know how or even done that? If EoIP is not possible, is there any other simple way?
I had already read and thought about doing it with OpenVPN, but when I read the community documentation for OpenVPN on ubuntu 10.10, I fear it won't connect the tunnel to mikrotik OpenVPN server, since OpenVPN on ubuntu uses 2 certificate and 2 key files(as i read on the docs), but mikrotik configuration, i can see only 1 certificate can be applied on. This confuses me and make me decide to use EoIP(but i can't find any tutorial/docs about it). I don't actually need the encryption and security, i just need to create a tunnel for ubuntu and mikrotik.

I'm testing out the aliases to have a better understanding on how to shorten commands. I am trying to list all files whose file names end with a .c extension in which starts from the current working directory and recursing through subdirectories as well. And I want to delay the path name expansion until the alias is executed. I want to use the directory /usr/share. Would the command be: alias findc='find -type d -exec /usr/share'?

Anyone know if it is possible to create an alias that calls a script that will SU to a different ID and log me in.
Currently I have to log in using my ID and the SU to an administrator ID. Just kind of a pain to do all the time.

I want an alias in my .ircrc to connect to a server, say like:Code:alias fnode server irc.freenode.netSo if I type '/fnode', it will automatically execute the command '/server irc.freenode.net'. But the IRC client says unknown command: fnode. What is the proper alias line for this?

I'm installing Ubuntu to be used as an NFS storage server for my VMWare ESX servers. I've got a server that has two 2TB drives in it. The hardware raid controller isn't an option because it only sees up to 1TB of each drive. So, I'm trying to figure out to do this using either LVM or Parted. I don't know much about doing this, and LVM was the first thing I tried but it didn't seem to do much. It looks like it just created a smaller partition to install Ubuntu on. It didn't ask me what I wanted to do with the rest of the drive space. I've messed around with Parted and am not sure what to do, to be honest. I found a few blog posts but most started off assuming that I knew how to get to where they were starting from.
It's just two drives, /dev/sda /dev/sdb

I have run into a Gparted problem that I am not familiar with. I've never seen it before.
I cannot create logical partitions without errors or not at all. I have two choices:
1) not checking 'round to cylinders' - I will get an error* and it will not partition
2) check 'round to cylinders' - it will partition but I will also obtain 4MB of unallocated space (each time)
This applies to Primary partitions, too, I think. At least, #2 will happen.
Imho, this is ridiculous. Why would I retain 4MB of unallocated space? In other words, the two choices above are not choices.
The error message doesn't explain much if anything either. *"Unable to satisfy all constraints on the partition"

just about to install Fedora 10 on my MSI WIND laptop and read abit about file system on Linux and come across alot of recommendations on how many logical mounts or partition to create..so far i have created /boot of 100MB.i'm unsure of what sizes i will give to my [root] / and /home and /swap
i am thinking of assigning 1GB to /swap which leaves me with 40GB left for / and /home.i'm going to install alot of softwares and probably try out wine as well.i want a separate /home directory incase i change distro then i'll keep it... where does the programs go to under?

Is there a limit to the number of partitions/logical volumes you can create using the partman-auto recipes? If not, any thoughts on why my preseed using the values included below results in only a /boot partition and logical volumes root, swap, and user? Is there another way to achieve putting /, /tmp, /var, /usr, /usr_local /opt, etc on their own logical volumes with preseeding?

i've been an intermediate-level linux user for some years, and now i'm supposed to set up and manage a small network for our research group. we have 5 linux boxes with ubuntu 10.04 (actually i'm installing everything we need in one box and will attempt to clone the others with clonezilla). i've 2 questions:
1) i'd like to manage all user accounts from one pc (server? so to say), so that every user can log in any of the 5 machines with the same passwd etc. what is the best/easiest/most stable application/protocol to manage this?
2) is it possible to create a network logical volume, based on the individual HDs and visible to all boxes? something like a RAID0 over ethernet?

I've been trying now for 2 days to get my WUSB600N v1 adapter installed on 10.04. I'm a bit of a noob but have been able to follow some posts on here on getting it set up. This is what I've done:
Installed the Ralink RT2870 drivers. Changed the config.mk to enable some parameters. Compiled and installed. Added some entries to blacklist.conf. Updated network/interfaces to include my wpa settings and passphrase. Restarted/rebooted/reinstalled about 100 times!
Here's what happens: iwconfig shows wlan0 with an ESSID:"" and Nickname: "RT2870STA" iwlist wlan0 scan shows my router fine (although does not show Cell 02 which should be the 5GHZ range). So basically it's not connecting to my router. Not sure if I missed any steps. Will gladly provide some extra output if needed. Pulling my hair out over this now ready to throw the adapter in the trash.

I installed fedora 13 64 bit and it works great but I encountered several issues when setting up guest OS with KVM. The problem seems to be related to selinux. But let me first ask question about logical volume. By Default fedora created logical volumes:
[Code].....
"If you expect that you or other users will store data on the system, create a separate partition for the /home directory within a volume group. With a separate /home partition, you may upgrade or reinstall Fedora without erasing user data files." seems to suggest I have to create a separate physical partition and assign that to /home. But reading elsewhere it seems to suggest logical volume acts like a partition. My goal is to make it easy in case fedora is hosed and I have to re-install it without affecting /home where my cirtical data resides. Given above do I need to create a separate physical partition or I am just fine?
I have a second hard disk that originally had windows and all my data. Windows is hosed but I can see my data from within Fedora and Windows is gone and I created created new partition in its place which used ot be the C:/ drive appears as 53 Gb filesystem. My data which was originally D drive appears as 215 GB filesystem. As given in [URL] I want to create a new logical volume in 53 Gb filesystem which I want to use as space for virtual disk to install guest OS's in KVM. Currrently 53 GB filesystem is mounted as /media/3467BH89JK789 but this does not work well with KVM. how do I create this logical volume out of 53 Gb filesystem partition and add proper selinux info and do I add to vg_vostrolx volume group and in a different volume group?

I have to move our DNS server to our VMware environment. With that comes a new IP address (10.10.102.x). The current address is in the 192.168.10.x. range. Is there a way to bind an alias to my NIC that has a different IP range? I tried it and it didnt work but if i used two IPs in the same subnet range it works. What are my options?
I don't want to go around and modify all my clients to use the new IP. I have many other things running like Nagios and Puppet. Unfortunately this is going to suck and I probably dont have any other options.

I know I can rename my network interfaces (eg 'eth0' to 'lan', 'eth1' to 'net' etc) but does anyone know a way I can alias (symlink if you like) 'lan' -> 'eth0'
I want to be able to use more legible interface names in things like iptables rules (such as "-i lan" instead of "-i eth0") but I don't want to break any config that is expecting eth0 to exist....

I'm running ubuntu 9.04 and I have set up 2 ip aliases using the /etc/network/interfaces file http://pastie.org/775037 -- when I ping the main address 10.0.2.16, all works fine, same with the first alias 10.0.2.22 -- but I can't reach the 2nd alias 10.0.2.23 I get the following from ping:
PING 10.0.2.23 (10.0.2.23): 56 data bytes
Request timeout for icmp_seq 0
Request timeout for icmp_seq 1
Request timeout for icmp_seq 2
92 bytes from 10.5.0.1: Destination Host Unreachable

4 5 00 5400 06eb 0 0000 3f 01 5e81 10.5.0.34 10.0.2.23
My machine's IP address is 10.5.0.34 I can't figure out why I can ping 10.0.2.22 but not 10.0.2.23 -- seems like there is probably some kind of routing thing that I'm missing, but I'm confused how it would have gotten set up for 10.0.2.22 but not 10.0.2.23 -- hopefully someone out there has an idea -- or can point me to references where I might be able to learn how to debug routing issues on a network?

Is there anyway you can configure either OpenVPN client or the system to allow connections using OpenVPN to be made to computers on the OpenVPN network using their alias rather than their IP address. This may sound blasphemous but you can in Windows. That is if the VPN network is say 10.x.0.x I could connect to Comp4 or Comp2 using Comp4 or Comp2 not 10.x.0. 4 or 10.x.0.2 or whatever IP is allocated by the OpenVPN server. If the OpenVPN server has not been restarted then it will usually allocate the same IP every time the same client connects.

So Linux does an excellent job in managing rights per user. You all know the file and process management.
But is it also possible to create a virtual private network interface?
Say Linux user John Doe (jdoe) wants to test network software without being root and disturbing the real netif. Can you create an interface that belongs to jdoe only? Like eth0, eth1 and ethJdoe, making ethJdoe belonging to jdoe.

Code:
:network-scripts; cat ifcfg-eth0
NAME="System eth0"
DEVICE=eth0
