Ubuntu Networking :: Using VNC To Control Vista?

Feb 15, 2010

My Linux box is eventually gunna sit in my AV setup, so I dont really want a keyboard and mouse hanging off of it once it's setup, so my plan is, the occasions i do need to tinker, to RDP/VNC to it from my Vista laptop. Now I've got the free version of RealVNC running on the Vista laptop and I can bring up the Linux desktop ok, and on first glance it seems ok, but quickly everything proves to not be ok. The mouse and keyboard dont work, say I click on something, nothing happens. However, if I close the VNC session and restart, the previous mouse click has then happened and visible in the VNC session. So it seems things arent updating properly.

Ubuntu Networking :: File Sharing - Vista Can See Ubuntu - Ubuntu Cannot See Vista

Nov 24, 2010

After a reinstall of 10.10, I am able to turn on file sharing and so I set up a shared folder.

Windows Vista can see this folder but in my network place, there is only one icon, and it's a "Windows Network" icon. Upon clicking on that, I can see the local network, "Rompus Room".

When I click on Rompus Room, nothing happens for a while, then I get a message saying, "Opening "ROMPUS ROOM". Then I get the final message, "Unable to mount location", followed by, "Failed to retieve share list from server"

Installation :: Unistall Windows Vista From An Ubuntu / Vista Dual-boot?

Mar 18, 2011

I have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

Ubuntu :: Repairing Vista By Booting Vista From A USB Stick

Mar 22, 2011

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.

I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).

I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions

I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).

In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.

then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.

But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"

So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.

When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?

My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.

I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.

So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

There is a thread here explaining how to repair Vista bootloader

[url]

But it assumes that I am able to boot from CD-RW drive.

Fedora Installation :: Dual Booting Vista And / 11 Wipes Out Windows Vista?

Nov 18, 2009

i have recently started my masters degree program and i have to install fedora 11 for one of my courses. The problem is when i try to install fedora 11 on my laptop, it wipes out my windows vista installation. I want to keep vista. I have a sony vaio laptop model VGN-FW340D. 4GB RAM and 400 GB HD. i first shrink my hard drive to free up around 100 GB. Then i run fedora 11 DVD and let it make the partitions on my free space.. I have tried everything.. I chose use free space the first time, but i didnt work, it wiped out my vista, next time i chose custom layout and defined boot, root and swap partitions , but again it wiped out my vista.. I have read many guides to dual boot vista and fedora and have carried them out step by step, but nothing works.... Also i dont have vista installation DVD, i just have the recovery CDs, so everytime it wipes out my vista, i have to do system recovery, ive been trying for a week now, and its driving me crazy, i asked a friend of mine to help me out, he has dual boot system, and he tried it and it did the same thing, wiped out my vista... i just have one drive C: with two partitions, one small partitions which contains recovery files, and the rest of the partition has vista.......

Ubuntu :: Control-c - Control-v - Copy And Paste Functions - Stopped Working

I don't know how this happened, but my keyboard copy and paste functions have stopped working. Oddly enough, I discovered that I can only copy and paste by using the third mouse button. Pressing down on the scroll wheel after highlighting text copies the text, pressing it again pastes it Ican still use the Edit-copy and Edit-paste menu functions.

I'm sure it has something to do with all the tinkering I have been doing with my desktop. I have been experimenting with CompizConfig and Cairo dock, changing my themes and things of this nature.

Ubuntu Networking :: Cannot Remote Vista Desktop Using RDP

Jan 26, 2010

i am a new user to Ubuntu and Linux for that matter. I am using ubuntu 9.10. I want to remote from my Ubuntu machine into my Vista desktop (Vista Ultimate).i can do so with ease using the various Ubuntu application through vnc. However, whenever I try to do so through RDP I am unable to do so. When I try to remote into the Vista machine through RDP it will launch the Vista login screen where I enter my user name and password. It always comes back saying that the password is incorrect even though the login is the same that is used to login everyday. It doesn't seem to be a firewall problem because I disabled it and get the same results. I also get the same results when using either a wired connection or a wireless connection on the Ubuntu machine. My normal network consists of the Ubunu notebook, my Vista Ultimate Desktop (wired to the router) and my Vista Ultimate Tablet PC on a wireless connection.

I might mention that I can remote using RDP from my Ubuntu notebook into into the Vista Tablet PC with no problem. But not the so with the Desktop. Always fails telling me that I am using an incorrect password. I am the only user on either Vista machine and as far as I can tell everything is set the same on both Vista systems (securrity, remote, etc.) unless I am missing something, which I apparently am.Not sure if it makes any difference but the Tablet pc has always run Vista but the Desktop was orriginally an XP and for the life of me I can't remember if I did an upgrade to Vista Ultimate or a clean install since it has been a year or so.

Ubuntu Networking :: Get Vista And Natty To Work Together?

Jun 5, 2011

I have spent the last two weekends trying to get Vista and Ubuntu(natty) to work together. From Ubuntu:

- I have disabled ufw

- setup a shared directory at /mnt/public (Permissions on public are 777)

- Ubuntu can access Vista shares.

- From the GUI, the "Network Servers" directory contains a "Windows Network" directory, but the Windows Network is empty.

- I can ping the Vista machine

From Vista:

- Nothing is visible. The ubuntu PC itself is not listed in the "Network" folder or map.

- I have disabled all firewalls (including the router)

- I can ping the ubuntu machine by IP address but cannot access it by IP address through

- "Run" - I enter \192.168.1.50, then get the logon pop-up. I enter the ubuntu creds, then receive a "Windows cannot connect to \192.168.1.50..." error message.

- "Command Prompt" ftp (or sftp) - I get connection refused.

- via "Web Browser" - I get the following message: "It works! This is the default web page for this server. The web server software is running but no content has been added, yet." The problem is that it doesn't work.

Everything I have googled up so far has been problems connecting in the opposite direction. I am trying to get to the Ubuntu machine. Although I checked all the smb.conf, inetd.conf and a few other files that I've seen mentioned, I cannot get the Vista machine to connect to the ubuntu machine.

Ubuntu Networking :: How To Share Printer Between Kubuntu And Vista

Feb 2, 2010

Is there someone out there that makes something simple that you can network and share a printer between Kubuntu and Vista? I have my office computer running Kubuntu, which also has the printer attached to it. My media machine downstairs is running Vista, which I'd like to be able to print and share files from. I've been doing some reading that you need to use Samba. So, I installed Samba through Synaptic, and it appears that nothing happened. So, I did some more googling, and found I had to install something about system-config-samba, so I did.

I now have a Samba icon under k-menu > System > Samba. However, when I click on this icon, nothing happens. It does nothing (just like clicking on the Network Manager icon, which does nothing as well). So, I am now utterly confused. Is there a way to change samba settings via gui? I'm not comfortable with typing unknown commands into the terminal, as usually there is no explanation as to what's going on. If there was a step by step explanation, that would be ok, but as of now, there is nothing. Is there a simple setup tool out there?

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows Vista Cannot Access Smbshare

Mar 30, 2010

I am having an issue setting up (or rather accessing) a samba share, I have installed samba and created a share a follows:

Quote:

[smbshare]
comment = 1TB Drive Share
path = /media/1TB EXT eSATA/SMBshare
browsable = yes
read only = no

I then added a user to the server using:

Quote:

sudo useradd smbuser --shell /bin/false

and then added this to the smbuser list with:

Quote:

sudo smbpasswd -a smbuser

So everything seems to work fine here, I can see the server from my windows vista laptop, open the server and see the shared folder, but when I try to open the folder I enter username 'smbuser' and password 'xxxxxx' and get a windows error saying "not accessible you might not have permission to use this service"I have even tried to set this up as a public share with full guest privileges and get the same error.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing 3g Connection On 10.04 And Vista Via Router?

May 28, 2010

i'm totally new to Linux and Ubuntu. I own a huawei 3g modem through which I connect to the internet. I plan to share the internet from that connection between my Vista pc and another pc running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. The computer I plan to use to share the internet, let me call it Server, is equalling running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. My Server perfectly recognises my modem and connects to the internet using it and I can browse.

I plan to connect the routers internet port to my Server using my servers network card. Then i intend to let the router do the sharing of the internet to the other computers on its own. I don't have any idea how to go about doing this. Originally, I tried a direct connection between my Server and the other pc running Lucid Lynx without bothering with the router and using the following settings which i found on an online tutorial:

Server ip 192.168.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
and no gateway
then on the client
client ip 192.168.0.5
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
I used open DNS servers for the DNS

However, i was unable to browse the internet from the client even though a connection between the two was established. Then I thought to myself, why go through this trouble, I have a router so why not go ahead and use it. But then I do not know how to do that. Using the router will enable me to effortlessly connect all my computers irrespective of operating system and ease the network creation process.

Ubuntu Networking :: Vista Prints Test Page But Nothing Else?

Oct 18, 2010

I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 on an old box to use as an office print/fax and file server. I tried the server edition but I had no chance with command line programming so I've just used normal Ubuntu.

Ubuntu itself is working fine and I've installed my HP Officejet printer and it's fully working on the Ubuntu box. SAMBA and CUPS are installed.

I've then added the printer onto my Vista machine and here's where the fun starts. The Vista box sees the printer on Ubuntu, adds it with no problem and happily prints test pages, but I can't get it printing anything else.

I can't for the life of me find any reason why it would print a test page, but not print from Word, adobe or even a browser.

Debian :: Sound Not Card Configured - Error 'Volume Control Did Not Find Any Elements And/or Devices To Control" - Driver

Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.

Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'

Ubuntu Networking :: ICS: Connect Tethered Phone Through Vista Computer?
