Ubuntu Networking :: SSHFS Crossover Cable Connection 10x Slower In 10.04

May 2, 2010

I have a desktop running Ubuntu 8.04. I installed 10.04 on my laptop. When I mount my desktop music folder on my laptop and transfer files, they now only go at 100-200 KB/s. When I had 9.10 installed, they transferred at 1-2 MB/s.

This is the command I use to mount the directory:
sshfs matt@169.254.6.233:/home/matt/Music/ /home/matt/Music/desktop/
Is there any way I can speed it up to get it back to max speed?

Applications :: Firefox Slower Compiling Data Than In Vista

Oct 2, 2010

I've been trying to make Linux my only OS and have run into another snag - this time with Firefox. I realize I could try Opera or Chrome but for this thread I'm concerned with Firefox.I still dual-boot and while I've always notice that Firefox doesn't scroll as smoothly as it does in Vista, this latest issue is a concern:

I'm on the BOD for a different club forum (hobby) and need to print a list of the new registrants for various reasons. Firefox initially presents the list in portrait mode but I need it to be in landscape. Generating the initial "print preview" then changing the "print preview" from portrait to landscape takes substantially longer than in Vista on the same box...it's 30-40 seconds in Vista and nearly 2 minutes in Linux - that's a huge difference!!

As I mentioned it's a dual boot so the hardware is the same and it shouldn't involve the HPLIP service as it's a preview.I don't know if this is an openSuse issue, Kernel issue or something else.

Ubuntu Networking :: Sharing 3g Connection On 10.04 And Vista Via Router?

May 28, 2010

i'm totally new to Linux and Ubuntu. I own a huawei 3g modem through which I connect to the internet. I plan to share the internet from that connection between my Vista pc and another pc running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. The computer I plan to use to share the internet, let me call it Server, is equalling running Ubuntu Lucid Lynx. My Server perfectly recognises my modem and connects to the internet using it and I can browse.

I plan to connect the routers internet port to my Server using my servers network card. Then i intend to let the router do the sharing of the internet to the other computers on its own. I don't have any idea how to go about doing this. Originally, I tried a direct connection between my Server and the other pc running Lucid Lynx without bothering with the router and using the following settings which i found on an online tutorial:

Server ip 192.168.0.1
netmask 255.255.255.0
and no gateway
then on the client
client ip 192.168.0.5
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
I used open DNS servers for the DNS

However, i was unable to browse the internet from the client even though a connection between the two was established. Then I thought to myself, why go through this trouble, I have a router so why not go ahead and use it. But then I do not know how to do that. Using the router will enable me to effortlessly connect all my computers irrespective of operating system and ease the network creation process.

Ubuntu :: Internet Connection Is Slower After Update On 10.04?

Aug 15, 2010

I've been running 10.04 since it came out basically and my internet connection has been fine. After I got the last set of updates that came up on the update manager (which if I remember mainly contained an updated version of the latest kernel and a couple other files) my internet connection speed went from a decent browsing speed and file transfer speeds between 80-200kbps to an almost dialup browsing speed to file transfer speeds of a about 7.5kbps its very significant and very annoying it took 20 minutes just to make this post.

Also I've already tried changing my ipv6 settings.

Debian Configuration :: Resolving Host - Connection When Using Browser Or Downloading Is Noticeably Slower Than When Using Windows

Mar 8, 2010

I just installed a dual boot XP/Debian 5.0.4 setup on my Dell 5100 laptop. I now have constant problems with "resolving host" when using Debian. The connection when using a browser or downloading is noticeably slower than when using Windows or my Ubuntu install on my desktop. Also, whenever using the Debian install on my laptop, both it and my desktop, which both connect through the same Linksys router, constantly show "resolving host" (Chrome browser) until it just timeouts. Rebooting the DSL modem sometimes fixes it for a while (although it's still slow even then), but it eventually happens again. Turn off the laptop/switch to the XP OS on it, and the problems disappear on both the laptop and desktop. Is this a known problem for Debian 5.0.4?

Ubuntu :: 10.04 Gets Slower And Slower After Its Been Running A While

Im experiencing a strange problem with 10.04. When it first boots up its reasonably quick (as snappy as Gnome ever has been) but after its been running for a day or two it gets ununsably slow and has to be rebooted.

I dont see how it can be anything to do with my hardware as it runs OK when first started. Ive monitored RAM usage and it doesnt seem to differ much. There's always the same amount unused.

Ubuntu Networking :: Internet Slower On 10.10

Jan 18, 2011

I have EastLink cable Internet and I have the fastest residential service money can buy, I get speed test results of 30mbps down and 2mbps up, that being said, my Internet was lightning fast on windows and Mac but when I installed Ubuntu, which is my favourite OS, my Internet is very slow and laggy. Sometimes it could take several minutes for a web page to load and some torrents download at 1-2 MBps and some download at under 100kb/sec, some web pages load instantly, some take longer.

I've searched other forums I found was turning off IPv6, I am not really sure what that is but I followed the steps provided and shut it off but did not notice much of a difference. I am basically a beginner when it comes to Linux, I use the OS for my day to day school and entertainment. I listen to music, watch movies, do school work and such since I am a university student. I really love Ubuntu and don't want to be forced to go back to Win blows, I really don't like windows at all so I would really like to solve this issue and stick with this operating system.

Ubuntu Networking :: 11.04 - WiFi Gets Slower And Times Out

May 7, 2011

Installed 11.04 on my Acer Aspire 5742-6674. It has a Atheros adapter. In my Windows 7 partition, its a AR5B95. But Ubuntu is says its a AR9287. I'm using the ath9k driver, version 2.6.38-8-generic-pae. I tried the following:
Code:
sudo -s
echo "options ath9k nohwcrypt=1" > /etc/modprobe.d/ath9k.conf
reboot

Still not working right. My wifi works ok at first...gets slower and slower...and eventually times out on everything. At that point, I have to restart the computer so it can work normally for a short time. Works totally fine when wired. Works totally fine wired or wireless on my Windows 7 partition. Both wired and wireless worked fine when I was using 10.10.

I am doing backups and restores to and from a backup server machine in the garage (in case of fire or theft) using rsync, and the LAN is running much slower than I think it should. Best consistent speed I get is 40Mb/s. The lights on the interface cards indicate it's in Gb mode, and the interfaces are fairly new. The router is a Netgear WNDR3700 the top-of-the-line consumer-grade router. Hardwire only, using Ubiquiti ToughCable and ToughConnectors, less than a 50' run.

Ubuntu Networking :: 25% Slower Than Win7 - Browser Firefox

Jun 17, 2011

Just installed the latest 11.04 64bit ubuntu, using std cd install alongside windows7, ticking the "add all extras" option, to ensure I got all the latest drivers etc.. The pc is brand new

Acer emachines E644 - AMD 2 Core C-50
3Gb DDR3 mem
500 Gb hard drive

Pre-installed: 64bit Win 7 home premium I've literally changed nothing in win7 other than using wubi to install ubuntu 1st time around (ubuntu appears as a win program - and was un-installed as such). Note: It is too late to now check, but......... under wubi/win7 I had no sense that the browser firefox was running slow - i didn't do a speedtest.net cos of other priorities (and it seemed fine). On advice, I started again (new partitions etc). The Problem: Ubuntu is now 25% slower (broadband) than Win7! Actually, it feels worse than that - more like it was on my previous lap top that had 512Mb ram running xp. Here are the results after switching os's a couple of times.

[Code]....

Firefox managed one spurious result of 5.89, but the graph (on the speedtest display) was absolutely all over the shop (like it's overall results). Compare that to iExplorer - total stability, and in fact, more like 30% faster + a much better ping. Anyway, I guess you know all this, I've seen that plenty of others have noticed this speed drop in the past, so:

Whilst I get between 18 and 19 mbs on Vista I only get 4.5 on Ubuntu - how do I fix this - is it an issue with my ethernet drivers or my setup?

I am on a 20mbs cable modem - I connect via an ethernet cable to a router - which obviously connects to the cable modem.

The ubuntu network device is configured as 192.168.0.1, is on subnet 255.255.255.0, and uses gateway 192.168.0.2. Those are the values that I entered in /etc/network/interfaces.

The laptops are able to ping each other but I am not able to connect to the internet on the ubuntu machine. Am I missing something here? I did

Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

and also rebooted the ubuntu machine but no luck. I am unable to update apt-get.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Network Lot Slower And That Only Hotspot Works

Aug 17, 2010

My school has (once again) chosen to change their wireless network. This means it has gotten a lot slower, and that only our hotspot works. Our hotspot however is secured so that im unable to enter facebook, and a lot of other websites, etc. So what i did in windows was installing a program called hotspot shield, which redirects you ip through a server, so the LAN Admin basically have no control of what you're doing if he haven't got more skill than the one we have. I think what Hotspot shield does is making a vpn connection (correct me if im wrong) and i would certainly like to do that i ubuntu as well.

Fedora Networking :: Internet Slower - Than W/Windows

Nov 28, 2010

I recently switched my mom from Windows to Fedora , and ever since her Internet speed went down. Now it takes, on average, 6-8 seconds longer for her to load a web page with Firefox. Tried to replace the modem -- didn't help. She is on a DSL connection.

But here is the striking part. Her BitTorrent speeds are better than mine, and I have a cable rather than DSL.

I can't for life imagine how these two can coexist. An innocent web page takes forever to load, and torrents are so fast. By the way, she does say that torrents used to be *even* faster on Windows.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Much Slower In FC12/13 Than In Windows

It seems that the wireless is indeed faster. However, it it clearly a lot slower than under Windows 7 (it is a dual boot PC). My test is simply to play say Hulu in full screen: under Windows it looks fine, under FC13 it plays in slow motion.

Fedora Networking :: Slower Data Transfer Rate In KDE V GDM?

Nov 25, 2010

I have a FC13 box that has both Gnome and KDE sessions installed.

I have noticed on the KDE session that data transfer rates are slower than when I use Gnome.

In Gnome, I can transfer files between my FC13 machine and my Ubuntu 10.04 pc at a rate of 6.5 MB/s (52 Mb/s if my maths is correct), but in KDE the rate is only 3.5 MB/s (28 Mb/s).

"ethtool eth0" shows my NIC speed as 100 Mb/s. Obviously I am not hitting anywhere near that speed in either session, (a separate article may be happen in the future to address that), but I am curious as to why KDE is that much slower for file transfer.

Fedora Networking :: Wireless Slower To Connect After 15 Upgrade?

May 31, 2011

I've been using fedora on my Lenovo R61i since I got it...I believe the first version I used on this laptop was f10. I always try to keep it on the latest distro and I also enjoy a clean install every year or so. One thing I was always impressed with was how quickly I could go from sleep to back up and online. So I decided it was time for a clean install this weekend to fedora 15. Now when I wake it up (open the lid), it takes over a minute for the wifi to connect again. This hasn't been the case for the last 4 distro's so I'm wondering what I can do to speed that process back up, is there a particular package I can downgrade or is this something on their radar already and I should just wait for an upgrade?

Ubuntu :: Repairing Vista By Booting Vista From A USB Stick

Mar 22, 2011

I am trying to boot up Vista Home Premium from USB since my internal (bootable) CD-RW drive has failed and I cannot boot up Vista from CD.

I have Ubuntu running in the Windows partition and all my windows files are in there so I don't want to do a full installation of Ubuntu (yet).

I formatted an 8GB USB stick into two partitions

I then copied over to /dev/sdb1 all files from a Vista CD using an external CD-RW drive (which is not recognised as bootable on USB port).

In my Dell BIOS settings I changed the boot sequence to be bootable from USB disk first.

then I tried to reboot Vista installation in the USB stick.

But I get this message ..."this is not a bootable disk .. insert a bootable floppy"

So I could not boot up the Vista installation files.

When the boot flag is "on" in a GParted created partition does this make the partition DOS bootable for Vista installation?

My question is - What utility in Ubuntu 10.10 can create a DOS bootable partition on a USB stick? It seems that the MBR might have been overwritten when I installed Grub 2.0.

I can Grub dual boot between Windows and Ubuntu but I can't get very far with Windows .. stalls in safe mode.

So a Vista repair is called for. I would prefer not to reinstall Vista afresh at this stage.

There is a thread here explaining how to repair Vista bootloader

[url]

But it assumes that I am able to boot from CD-RW drive.

Ubuntu Networking :: Setting Up Bluetooth Connection Between Two Computers Throws Connection Refused (111)

I'm trying to create a PAN (Personal Area Network) using a laptop (Siragon ML-1040) and my desktop computer, but I get the Connection Refused (111) error.

Blueman doesn't detect any network service between the two computers unless I start PAND on one of them and then it detects the NAP service. That, only after I enable the NAP/Workgroup services on the Services submenu in Blueman. However, it doesn't work neither with the NM plugins or without them (dhclient and that other one I can't remember the name of).

Any clues over here? I'm using pand 4.91 and blueman.
