Ubuntu Networking :: USB Wifi Adaptor, 10.04, CD With Drivers?
Jul 28, 2010
Firstly, apologies if there is anything incorrect about this request for help. Consider me an intelligent but ignorant first time Ubuntu user. I have a USB wifi adaptor, [URL]../B...ef=oss_product, which claims to be Linux compatible. It was supplied with a CD that includes a Linux directory but windows-only documentation. How do I install the drivers etc, the device is currently entirely unrecognised by Ubuntu 10.04.

I just installed the Natty Beta and plugged in a Netgear WG111v3 USB wifi adapter. It is using the RTL8187B driver and worked out of the box. The problem it loses my connection every few minutes. Sometimes not for 10 or 15, sometimes like a minute or less. After it loses the connection, I have to uncheck "enable wireless" (which I assume is the equivalent of bringing down my wireless interface) and then check it again before it will let me reconnect. I don't want to try ndiswrapper because the card works great when it works, including monitor mode and packet injection!

when i go into additional drivers, only two drivers pop up, both for my wireless card. however, i can only use the first one because if i try to use them both it breaks my wifi, forcing me to reinstall the first driver. ordinarily, this wouldnt bother me because it works with just one, but i realized the other day that the reason it takes forever to do anything internet related is because im getting pathetic transfer speeds. the highest i can remember is only 800 kb/s. ive tried standing right next to the router and it makes no difference. i know its my drivers fault because i get the same speeds at two different home wifi networks (both houses roughly the same size). my ipod gets a better connection. the driver im using is a broadcom b43 proprietary driver. the one that breaks the working driver is a broadcom STA proprietary driver. i havent bothered to try the second without the first because i just didnt think about it, but i think i will soon and see if it makes any difference. does anyone have an idea as to why my driver sucks? im tired of waiting 20 minutes to watch a 3 minute ..... video.

I am having some issues and my fixes are not even close to functioning anymore.I originally downloaded this driver http:[url]... and, though I occasionally had to re- "make-install" it, it worked.Last night, I did the system updates Ubuntu suggested and this morning, my WiFi is not functioning .Here are the "common commands" and stuff I have used so far to try to debug the problem.
lspci: 1a/b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 20) 0c:03.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6306/7/8 [Fire II(M)] IEE iwconfig: wlan0 IEEE 802.11bg ESSID:"***** ******" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=20 dBm Retry long limit:7 RTS thrff Fragment thrff Power Managementff
I am slightly confused as to why my Wireless LAN Controller doesn't come up as my Realtek 8185, but I think that may be issue number 1. The next bit of confusion comes from the fact that wlan0 is shown as connected to the correct SSID, even showing a frequency, but is not, infact, sending or receiving from that source. As I have said before, I just really nee WiFi to work.I was having issues with my sound and graphics cards,so I ran the update manager, but I wasn't expecting it to break my drivers! It is also worth noting that I have actually tried to recompile my drivers and re-install them, they don't seem to be working, for some reason.

I have been trying to get aircrack-ng program to get to work but apparently i needed a negative-one-channel-maxim patch in order for it to work successfully. I have looked over wiki of aircrack and followed the guide a few times but every time my compiled module was rejected my modprobe.

I have a Netgear WG111v2 Wifi dongle, sadly there is no linux drivers for it. The only solution i can find is to use Ndiswrapper.
Will it be a major challenge writing a Linux driver ?
Where should i start ?
NB. I want to write my own driver for the following reasons:
Get a better understanding of Linux Device drivers. Probably, get a better understanding of C/C++ and Linux in general.

My laptop has an internal Broadcom wireless adaptor. It works fine for basic Internet access, but I cannot change the MAC address with ifconfig. I would like to be able to change my MAC address. Since this is a laptop, the only option for me to do this is a USB wireless adaptor. But compatibility is very hit-or-miss. I've already tried two USB adaptors that had been stated to be compatible with Linux, and while both worked for basic functionality, neither allowed me to change the MAC address.
For whatever reason, this information seems very, very difficult to find. I have spent upwards of ten hours cumulatively searching forums (including this one) and other resources, and have found only vague, outdated, or outright false information regarding USB adaptors that support this. I believe I will be doing a great service to other users like myself by getting this question directly and conclusively answered for once, and the more responses, the better.
Questions:
Do you have (or know of) a USB wireless adaptor that actually allows you to change the MAC address?
If so, what is the specific brand and model number, and what steps were necessary to install the drivers?

I have a older Dell desktop running a older version of Ubuntu 9.04. I recently got a Belkin N300 micro wireless usb adaptor so I could use it to connect to the internet. I have a Verizon MiFi 2200 wireless router that I use for internet access. The desktop won't recognize the new hardware. It came with a driver disc, but it's for windows.
Will this adapter even work with linux?
If so, how do I get it to work?

I set up an older computer with Ubuntu 9.10 and tried to get my Linksys AE1000 Wireless N adapter to work. My first mistake was not checking in advance to see if this adapter would work, but I have taken the leap and I am intent on making it work. I ran lsusb and it gives me a device number (13b1:002f) so I know it can be seen and I have also installed indisgtk the GUI for Wirless drivers. I have tried some suggestions from other posts to no avail.

I just recently moved somewhere and the internet is wirelessly provided by the whole condo building. It is just a free and open network but I am trying to find a way to hook up my Xbox 360 to the internet. I do not have a wireless adaptor or a spare router, what I do have is my ubuntu laptop. Is there a way I can hook my xbox up to my laptop and bridge the connections so that I can finally connect to xbox live via my laptop?

I installed CentOS 5.4 on my desktop yesterday after facing crashes from Ubuntu 9.04 Everything worked fine and few didn't which I could resolve, but this problem is absolutely strange to me. I've USB wireless adaptor Belkin F5D7050 v4000 which uses a zydas zd1211 chipset. The problem is that I've not been able to connect to internet or even in the local network. (I've this another Laptop (Windows Vista) which can connect to internet and thus I can post and download stuff.)
I read the CentOS wiki [URL] to setup the wireless network and it asked me to download a firmware for it.. I downloaded and installed the firmware from the specified location but to no respite and I can't connect to network. now the strange thing is the result of iwconfig which was here even before installing the firmware. iwconfig shows

Ubuntu seems to think my device is disabled. The switch is on and the blue light next to the switch is also on. I read up on this on other threads, but the solution involved using the cd. I had to install from windows using the iso and alcohol 120 because my cddrive is totally dead.

I have only had a few weeks worth of experience with linux, so I'm probably considered a newbie at this but I felt like giving it a shot. I just configured my new Toshiba Satellite A505-S6969 to jaunty. Most of the transition is going well but I'm stuck with a few issues, one of which is getting my wifi to work. Right now I'm working off of an ethernet cable.spci returns

My debian system does not have any wifi drivers unfortunately. I suspect highly that the driver is not in the 3.2 kernel so ideally I'd like to update to a newer kernel.. However, the laptop doesn't have a network port and I don't have a network to usb cable. So in other words: updating the kernel offline using a usb stick..
