I tried to use multiple mobile broadband modems in ubuntu 10.10 and encounter a bug as follows:
When i plug in a new modem, all the attached modem is automatic go offline ( thus my connection is down), and try to redial back, sometime the redial is successful, sometime it's not.
It was working fine in ubuntu 9.10, plug in a new modem, all attached modems stay connected.

Current: Workstation --> Wireless Router --> Cablemodem --> InternetsIPs:192.168.2.1 --> 192.168.2.5>192.168.1.5 --> 192.168.1.1>{someIP} --> InternetsSo my first link has a Class C of 192.168.2.0. I want to add a different class C also to that firstink of 192.168.3.0. The reason is my LAN traffic will be on 192.168.2.0 and traffic will be on 192.168.3.0.The wireless router can be only set up for one LAN IP, which is 192.168.2.5. Is there some way to set up a vpn or nat or bridge or something else so I can run two class C's to the router and it will pass them along? Router is the Netgear WNDR3700.

I have 5 linux ssh servers at my office that are behind a router. How do I connect to any one specific server from outside the LAN? Do I have to port forward the router giving each machine it's own port? That seems clunky.

I have been working with Linux for about 10 years and I have a good understanding of IPv4 networking and routing but not so much detailed knowledge of implementation or specific networking packages.
I have a Linux system running a custom-built (Linux from Scratch) distribution and using 2.6.15 kernel. My system has 4 Ethernet controllers (eth0, eth1, eth2, and eth3). I have intentionally left out support for forwarding/routing of packets as this machine is not intended to be a router and I specifically do not want it to be able to so. My intent for the machine is to function as a server to 4 different and separate networks without allowing traffic or hosts on one LAN to access or adversely affect those on the other LANs.
My main question: is there a way to completely isolate the connections to these LANs and if so, how might I achieve it, and through what packages?
I have been having some issues:
1) Default gateway. With only a single default gateway, network requests from a LAN that is not directly connected to one of the 4 NICs and for which there may not be a static route defined, may send a response to the default gateway which is on one of the LANs connected to a different NIC than the one that I received the initial request on. Is there anyway to isolate outgoing messages to only go out on the NIC that the corresponding request was received through?
2) Default gateways. I have a requirement to allow DHCP on these interfaces. It is possible that the DCHP servers on each of the 4 LANs may provide a default gateway, but I don't see how I can make use of that. I know that there is a way to configure multiple default gateways via the iproute2 package (which is what I am using) but I don't know how to make sure that the correct default gateway is used for requests that were received on a specific interface.

I am moving and am having AT&T DSL set up at my new place.. It is going to be set up next monday and I opted to not purchase their DSL modem (I wouldn't be there when it would be delivered and it would have been stolen most likely) So, anyone know of a DSL modem compatible with AT&T DSL that will work that I can pick up at a chain store? Wal-Mart, etc...

Q: How can I use at the same time two ADSL USB modems with pppd and pppoatm.so plugin?
I have the following scenario:
- Two ADSL USB modem correctly recognized by Linux.
- pppd configured with two different files, one for each ADSL (even if the two ADSL have the same parameters). Those files are /etc/ppp/peers/adsl1 and /etc/ppp/peers/adsl2
If I attach only one modem and then launch "pppd debug call adsl1" or "pppd debug call adsl2" everything works fine.
If instead I attach both modem in order to have two ppp interfaces, ppp0 and ppp1 I get the following behaviour:
- When launching "pppd debug call adsl1" the first modem connects correctly.
- When launching "pppd debug call adsl2" I get:
connect(8.35): Address already in use
That's because either adsl1 and adsl2 are trying to use the same modem.
So the question more specific question is: How can I specify which USB modem to use in pppoa ADSL connections?
With dialup modem it is possible to specify /dev/ttySx in peers files, but what about ADSL USB modems?

I would like to say first and foremost that I have tried to lookup what I can find about this thing I am doing and most of the time all I have found are either un-replied posts or vaguely explained answers but here is what I want to do.I want to setup a small gateway for my new office using two 3G internet providers offering Huawei usb modems. So I would like to have two internet links active per time and have one LAN consuming from the two links. I have seen the phrase Load Balancing all over the place but they all show their examples using ethernet and static IP's. My providers give DHCP ip addresses so is there anything I need to know and can anyone point me in the direction of some tutorial or howto i can follow to do this?

I am looking to buy my own unlocked/never-locked mobile broadband modem, and I want it to work well on my 64-bit 10.04 Ubuntu system (triple-booting MacBook 4,1). Is there a list of mobile broadband modems supported in the linux kernel out there somewhere? I did try to find one myself, but no luck. The Huawei E220 looks good, but it is discontinued.

For F10 patched. I'm in Honduras. The local cell / Internet provider that covers Guatamala, Honduras, El Salvador, uses an HSDPA modem marked "GBC" and is also known as the "China Bird". It's a black usb stick that looks identical to the option unit, but its definitely not an option modem.
lsusb lists it as 1c9e:1001 with no text after it. It automounts as a disk drive with typical Windows software on it. Nothing ever shows up in /dev/ttyUSB*, as I believe the disk mount causes it to not try mounting it as a modem. Dismounting it also does no good.

I recently got a HUAWEI E1630 HSDPA USB Modem and it was working fine until recently. Recently it starts to drop the connection and in /var/log/messages I can see a pppd error "Protocol-Reject for unsupported protocol xxxx". The protocol number is random. Only way to resume is to unplug and replug the device. The happens very frequently and hence the device is not usable.
To isolate the service provider end, I use the same SIM on a PROLINK HSDPA USB Modem and it works fine. Also I use a different SIM from another service provider in this device and the issue still exists.
I am on Kubuntu 10.10 with all the updates to date. Should I report a bug?

I'm trying to make a Huawei K3715 HSDPA modem work in Ubuntu 10.04.1. I plug it in, and it loads two mass storage devices (one CDRom containing the Windows software, and one 2GB drive that appears empty), but I don't really know where to go from here.
Note that I replaced the stock network manager with Wicd, as I find it more reliable in picking up wifi connections. I'm not sure if it's suitable for connecting the HSPA modem though.

I've been trying to get a USB modem stick to work with Karmic. The modem is the ZTE MF626 HSDPA on a Telstra Next G plan.I've followed all the guides and links on the forums:Have deactivated the CD autorun on the USB stick in XP lsusb is showing "Bus 002 Device 003:ID 19d2:0031 ONDA Communication S.p.A." demsg is showing "usb 2-2: GSM modem (1-port) converter now attached to ttyUSB1"This seems stable as well, ie checking periodically it doesn't seem to be disconnecting By the way,the blue light indicating network communication/modem active lights up after the device has been plugged in for a second or so.
When I go through Network Connections and add a new mobile broadband connection, there is nothing listed in the "Create a connection for this mobile broadband device" drop-down on the first configuration screen - all the guides I've read say that it should be listed here, but none say any debug steps if it doesn't.Some other guides for older versions of Ubuntu and earlier versions of the modem reference a "/usr/share/hal/fdi/information/20thirdparty/20-zte-mf626.fdi"file which I don't have.

I want to set up a Linux box as a wireless router to replace our existing Netgear WNR1000 router, as I believe the Netgear does not support the coming IPv6 protocol. Unfortunately, it is not flashable with OpenWRT or DD-WRT presently.
As we have Comcast, our cable modem acts as a dumb modem according to the customer support guy I talked to, and our router is the one that asks for the IP address from DHCP. Thus, when Comcast switches over to IPv6, I don't believe my existing router would work, correct?
My idea is to take a Linux box and put two NICs and a wireless adapter in it, using IPCop or Smoothwall to set up a router. I could then enable IPv6 support for when we have IPv6 with Comcast. Is that possible? Would there be a way to get BIND to hand out private IP addresses in the same subnet on the both the LAN NIC and the wireless card?

I have a desktop PC running Ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7, and a Eee PC 701 laptop running EasyPeasy Ubuntu 9.04. I'd like to connect the desktop to the laptop with a wired connection (eth0), then the laptop to my ADSL router using wireless (ath0).
I have a crossover ethernet cable (I bought on ebay). I have set up my laptop with a static IP address on my LAN and it uses OpenDNS.
I have added this to /etc/sysctl.conf on the laptop:
net.ipv4.ip_forward=1
Then I tried this on the laptop:
sudo iptables --table nat --append POSTROUTING --out-interface ath0 -j MASQUERADE
sudo iptables --append FORWARD --in-interface eth0 -j ACCEPT
This is a variation on what I found on other sites describing how to set up a router. I don't understand iptables very well, but I gather that the above two lines should set up forwarding so that traffic from my router to the laptop will be forwarded to the desktop, and vice versa.
But this doesn't work. The connection doesn't even establish between the laptop and the desktop.

I'm having trouble getting my network set up the way that I want it/had it. You see, when I first set up my network, I just had my cable modem going directly to my standard wired router (A D-Link DI-604), which had DHCP,and was connected to all of the computers on my network. I had one switch hooked up to one of the ports of the router, but this was a regular switch, and it would not try to assign IP addresses, it would just pass through the DHCP info as I wanted.
Now however, my network setup has changed. My room mate and I both got laptops, and we decided that we wanted to have wireless access so we didn't have to constantly plug in to the router.
Now my network is set up like this: The modem is hooked up to the router(DI-604), which is hooked up on the LAN side to our computers, our switch (which is hooked up to 3 more computers), and to a wireless router card (A Gigabyte GN-BC01).
The wireless router card has two jacks for ethernet. One for WAN, and one for LAN. The LAN side we have plugged only into the computer in which the card is installed.
Now the problem is this: The wireless router card comes with DHCP by default, and it's assigning addresses to the laptops and to the computer hat it's in, and worse, the IP addresses are on a different subnet than that of the main dlink router. The Main (dlink) router assigns addresses from 192.168.0.1 (itself) to 192.168.0.254, while the wireless router card assigns addresses from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.254 (itself).
Because of this, I cannot access services on the wireless network from my wired network or vice versa. The first thing I tried was setting the card to assign addresses from 192.168.0.12 to 192.168.0.253, however it just said "internal error" when I tried to do this. I decided that this may be because it sees that it was being assigned an address on it's WAN side on the same subnet. So the next thing I tried was disabling DHCP and setting the "LAN IP Address" to 192.168.0.12, hoping that the DHCP would just go through the card, like a switch. I would have set the LAN IP address to be assigned by DHCP, but this was not an option, so I decided that'd be the best thing to set it to.
Once again however, setting the LAN ip address to an address on the same subnet as that of the IP assigned to it's WAN side caused it to report an "internal error". I verified that this was the issue by setting the LAN address to several other private IP addresses to test (I.E. 10.0.0.1, 192.168.3.1, 192.168.5.12).
My question then really is: How do I set up both routers so that I can access services and computers from each network from the other network. Should I set them with different subnets and set the gateway on the wireless network to the main router? To the wireless router card? Should I put them on the same subnet? Will it know how to communicate?
Here is a link to (picture) my network diagram. Network Diagram
